The Fallen is the foundation of the story of The Greatest Sin, of a world adrift from its God that desperately wants Her back. New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Elle Casey – Apocalypsis Book 1: Kahayatle

My name's Bryn Mathis. I'm seventeen years old, and I live in a neighborhood outside of Orlando, Florida. I live alone because my dad died almost a year ago, along with all the other adults in the world. I'm almost out of food and the gangs of kids that roam around my town are getting more vicious by the day.

It's time for me to leave and find another place to live ... a place where I can find food and shelter ... a place where they won't be able to find me.

Alone, it might have been possible; but now I've got company. I'm worried that I don't have what it takes to get from here to my final destination.

And I have no idea what might be waiting for me when I get there.

**May not be suitable for younger, middle grade readers.**

Shalini Boland – Outside

A post-apocalyptic romance thriller.

The world of the future is divided by Perimeters: high-security gated communities where life goes on as normal. If you’re inside you’re lucky, if you’re outside life expectancy takes a nose dive.

Riley is fortunate to have been born on the right side of the fence. But her life of privilege comes crashing down when someone breaks through the Perimeter and murders her sister. She forsakes her own safety to go in search of the killer. Luc decides to go with her otherwise she’ll be dead before she’s past the security gate. But what awaits her outside is more unbelievable than she ever expected.

Cut to the present day where Eleanor's world is falling apart. This time next year, civilisation won't be quite so civilised . . .

*Suitable for adults and teens aged 13+*

Zoe Cannon – The Torturer’s Daughter

When her best friend Heather calls in the middle of the night, Becca Dalcourt assumes it's the usual drama. Wrong. Heather's parents have been arrested as dissidents - and Becca's mother, the dystopian regime's most infamous torturer, has already executed them for their crimes against the state.

To stop Heather from getting herself killed trying to prove her parents' innocence, Becca hunts for proof of their guilt. She doesn't expect to find evidence that leaves her questioning everything she thought she knew about the dissidents... and about her mother.

When she risks her life to save a dissident, she learns her mother isn't the only one with secrets - and the plot she uncovers will threaten the lives of the people she loves most. For Becca, it's no longer just a choice between risking execution and ignoring the regime's crimes; she has to decide whose life to save and whose to sacrifice.

It's easy to be a hero when you can save the world, but what about when all you can do is choose how you live in it? An Amazon dystopian bestseller, The Torturer's Daughter is a story about ordinary life amidst the realities of living under an oppressive regime... and the extraordinary courage it takes to do what's right in a world gone wrong.

Scott Cramer – Night of the Purple Moon

Abby, 13, is looking forward to watching the moon turn purple, unaware that deadly bacteria from a passing comet will soon kill off older teens and adults. She must help her brother and baby sister survive in this new world, but all the while she has a ticking time bomb inside of her--adolescence.

*Parental discretion advised for readers 13 and under*

Sarah Dalton – The Blemished

A beautiful world comes at a price...

In a world filled with stunning clones Mina Hart is Blemished. Her genes are worthless and that takes away her rights: her right to an Education, her right to a normal life and her right to have a child.

Mina keeps a dangerous secret which she never thought she could share until she meets Angela on her first day at St Jude's School. But their friendship is soon complicated by Angela’s adoptive brother Daniel. Mina finds herself drawn to his mysterious powers and impulsive nature. Then there is the gorgeous clone Sebastian who Mina is forbidden from even speaking to…

The Blemished is a frightening take on a fractured future where the Genetic Enhancement Ministry have taken control of Britain. It will take you on a ride filled with adventure, romance and rebellion.

Book one in the popular YA dystopia series 'Blemished'.

Katie French – The Breeders

“When the Breeders come for ya, there ain't no escape. They strap ya to a bed and all ya hear is the thud of your heart and the cries of your friends as they wheel ya down to hell. Then the doctors come. You squeeze
your eyes shut and pray you can forget. But ya never do.”

Sixteen-year-old Riley Meemick is one of the world's last free girls. When Riley was born, her mother escaped the Breeders, the group of doctors using cruel experiments to bolster the dwindling human race. Her parents do everything possible to keep her from their clutches-- moving from one desolate farm after another to escape the Breeders' long reach. The Breeders control everything- the local war lords, the remaining factories, the fuel. They have unchecked power in this lawless society. And they're hunting Riley.

When the local Sheriff abducts the adult members of her family and hands her mother over to the Breeders, Riley and her eight-year-old brother, Ethan, hiding in a shelter, are left to starve. Then Clay arrives, the handsome gunslinger who seems determined to help to make up for past sins. The problem is Clay thinks Riley is a bender-- a genderless mutation, neither male nor female. As Riley's affection for Clay grows she wonders can she trust Clay with her secret and risk her freedom?

The three embark on a journey across the scarred remains of New Mexico-- escaping the Riders who use human sacrifice to appease their Good Mother, various men scrambling for luck, and a deranged lone survivor of a plague. When Riley is forced into the Breeder's hospital, she learns the horrible fate of her mother—a fate she'll share unless she can find a way out.

Book Spotlight: The Looking Glass, by Jessica Arnold!

Today we highlight Jessica Arnold's debut novel, The Looking Glass, which will be released April 15th. This is a book I cannot wait to get my hands on. Check it out!

Find the diary, break the curse, step through The Looking Glass!

Fifteen-year-old Alice Montgomery wakes up in the lobby of the B&B where she has been vacationing with her family, to a startling discovery. No one can see or hear her! The cheap desk lights have been replaced with gas lamps and the linoleum tiled floor with hardwood and rich Oriental carpeting. Someone has replaced the artwork with eerie paintings of Elizabeth Blackwell, the insane actress and rumored witch who killed herself at the hotel in the 1880s. Alice watches from behind The Looking Glass where she is haunted by Elizabeth Blackwell.

Trapped in the 19th century version of the hotel, Alice must figure out a way to break Elizabeth’s curse—with the help of Elizabeth’s old diary and Tony, the son of a ghost hunter who is investigating the haunted B&B — before she becomes the inn’s next victim.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Jessica Arnold is currently a graduate student in publishing at Emerson College in Boston. She spends most of her time in class or work or slogging through the homework swamp, but if she has a spare moment, she’s always up for a round of Boggle. Her debut novel, THE LOOKING GLASS (Month9Books, January 2014), is a loose retelling of Alice in Wonderland.

Interview with Tara Brown PLUS Giveaway

Today we're chatting with author Tara Brown about her novel IN THE FADING LIGHT as part of her blog tour. Have a seat and grab a cuppa, and let's get to know Tara and her book.

Hi, Tara! Welcome to We Do Write. Tell us a bit about yourself.

I am a Canadian author. I'm pretty eclectic in my genres and I like to say adventurous but it could just be bipolar.

How long have you been writing?

Since I was in first grade, published since first year college.

Tell us about IN THE FADING LIGHT. What’s the story about?

The story is about a young woman who is trying to escape something horrid when she meets a man who she falls for. He has some serious baggage in the form of an Encantado named Lisle. The story twists and turns and when it ends I think most people will feel the ride they took. There is magic, mystery, betrayal, badass girls and hot guys, and some spicy romance. It is NA so I threw some sex in, I mean why not.

How did the idea of the story come to you?

I saw the cover of a girl in a raven's feathered dress and just suddenly knew the story.

Do you have a critique group/partner or beta readers, or do you self-edit?

I self edit, then we do alpha and beta and then I send to an editor who has a severe system and then we do a final beta. Pretty painful lol.

Are you a plotter or a pantser?

Pantser.

What’s the hardest part of writing for you?

Letting go afterward. I hang on sometimes and need a few hours of world of warcraft to numb my brain.

What do you absolutely have to have nearby when writing?

Magic Bag hahahaha. My neck cramps up.

What are you reading right now?

My own books doing back edit on old works. Yay me . . .

If you could have any super power, what would it be?

To be invisible. Then I could people watch better. That sounds creepy doesn't it.

What's the weirdest thing you've googled?

Sleep sex assault and the people who like to sit on balloons naked and pop them.

Okay, wow. That's a new one. Quick writing test! Use the following words in a sentence: fading, memorable, and sequins.

In the back of my fading memory I recall her the way she was then, all dressed up in sequins and desperate to make everything memorable.

Finish this sentence: If I'm not writing, I'm probably ...

shopping or playing world of warcraft thinking about cleaning or baking.

Here’s the part where you thank the people who are supporting you. Let's hear your shout outs.

Are you kidding? Do you have hours? Can I have pages or just take over the blog.
Wow. ok. Uhhhhhh

Interview with Holli Anderson

Yes, it's Friday! I don't know about you, but I feel like this week has gone on forever. To celebrate the end of the week and the start of the weekend, let's indulge ourselves in a nice interview with author Holli Anderson.

Hi, Holli! Welcome to We Do Write! Tell us a bit about yourself.

I have a Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing—which has nothing to do with writing, except maybe by adding some pretty descriptive injury and vomit scenes to my books. I enjoy reading any book I get my hands on, but have a particular love for anything fantasy.

Along with my husband, Steve, and our four sons, I live in Grantsville, Utah—the same small town in which I grew up.

How long have you been writing?

I have actually only been writing for just over six years. I discovered during a rough time in my life that writing takes me out of this world and I find a lot of peace there.

Tell us about FIVE - OUT OF THE DARK. What’s the story about?

Five is about 5 teenagers that find out they have magical abilities—they have no idea where these abilities came from or how to use them. The Five have never met, but all end up having to leave home for different reasons. They are all drawn to the Seattle Underground, where they meet up and start living and practicing their magic together. They soon discover that the world is full of monsters thought to only exist in nightmares, but most people can’t see them. The Five become protectors of the unsuspecting humans and find themselves back in high school, pitted against an evil principal who isn’t what he seems.

There is a budding romance between sixteen year old Paige and seventeen year old Johnathan—until Johnathan gets bitten by a changeling. The bite transforms him into a ravening beast once a month—which is much easier to deal with than the day-to-day havoc the venom is wreaking on his emotional stability.

As the Five deal with the evil that has infiltrated the high school, Paige vows to find a way to cure Johnathan—no matter what it takes.

How did the idea of the story come to you?
I had a very vivid dream one night that involved a group of teenagers in an underground setting. They were fighting with some adults who were trying to take over their dilapidated home. That’s where the idea started and my imagination took it from there.

Do you have a critique group/partner or beta readers, or do you self-edit?
I have an awesome critique group who are always the first to read my stories. We keep our group fairly small—only 5 or 6 members, and we meet once a month.

Are you a plotter or a pantser?
Pantser. I love letting the story tell itself. I love being surprised by unexpected turns—this happens even though I’m the one writing the story.

What’s the hardest part of writing for you?
Finding time to write is definitely the hardest part for me.

What do you absolutely have to have nearby when writing?
I have to have a drink—either water or Diet Dr. Pepper—nearby. Also, music. I listen to hours of Pandora while I’m writing, I change stations to fit with the scenes I’m writing.

What are you reading right now?
I’m reading The Enchanter Heir by Cinda Williams Chima.

If you could have any super power, what would it be?
The power to Heal. I’m an ER nurse by day and it would be amazing to be able to heal people’s injuries and illnesses with the touch of my hands.

What's the weirdest thing you've googled?
Hmm . . . Names of Demons?

Quick writing test! Use the following words in a sentence: flashlight, contemplating, and firefly.
He was seriously contemplating how he could capture the ginormous firefly to use as a flashlight before he descended into the blackness of the abandoned mine.

Finish this sentence: If I'm not writing, I'm probably ...
Watching my teenage boys play sports while I daydream about writing.

Here’s the part where you thank the people who are supporting you. Let's hear your shout outs.
First and foremost I want to thank my amazing husband, Steve. His support and excitement for my work are unbelievable. My four boys are an inspiration to me and my writing—Riley, Wayne, Alec, and Seth have given so many things to write about! And, my publisher, Curiosity Quills Press. They have been nothing short of wonderful to work with.

And finally, where can people find you and your books online?
They can find me on Facebook at Author Holli Anderson, on Twitter @HaAuthor, on Goodreads, and on my website at holli-anderson.com.

My books can be found on Amazon.com, Barnes & Noble, Hastings, Kobo, and probably some other places I don’t know about.

Excerpt: Spartanica by Powers Molinar

Spartanicabanner

Good morning, lovelies! It's finally getting warm(ish) in my part of the globe and melting the two feet of snow we've been wading through. I couldn't be happier. It has been a harsh winter and the promise of spring couldn't be more sweet. After this year, I've decided I need to either suck it up and buy a snow blower, or move south.

Never mind my dream of kicking it on the beach come next January (It will never happen, folks. Snow blower, here I come.). Today we  have an excerpt of MG fantasy/adventure novel SPARTANICA by Powers Molinar to take our minds off the waning winter.

Ty and Marcus Mitchell are average middle school brothers growing up north of Chicago until one night when they’re hurtled through an inter-dimensional gateway to a parallel world defined by its multiple moons and planet-wide apocalypse. As they struggle to figure out where they are and how to get home, the boys encounter refugees of “the last day” from the distant city of Atlantis and a mysterious girl called Bellana, the sole survivor and resident of the devastated city of Spartanica. Ty and Marcus soon learn they only have seven days to get home. But before they can leave, they must battle through long-extinct predators, track down the elusive Professor Otherblood, and rescue a new friend from certain death. Is all of this insanity just Ty’s overactive imagination or are the brothers truly on the brink of being stranded on the brutal wasteland known as Spartanica?

EXCERPT:

I was at the end of the line. Literally.

Once Crivera’s soldier had been gone for a while, I felt around in the darkness and found the visor he so cleverly hid for me. I held it up to my eyes and couldn’t see anything through it until I poked my head into the gloom. Everything was still totally black except for a thin, barely noticeable orange line on the floor. I started following it when a scary thought hit me. What if this was a test? Crivera talked about trusting me more once I understood and supported the dream. For all I knew, this faint breadcrumb trail just led in circles or into the waiting arms of a dozen Desrata battlers.

But if this did turn out to be Crivera’s loyalty test, I was going to fail. Desrata battlers or not, I’d been following the orange line for the past thirty protokas right up to where it just stopped. I felt along a wall in front of me, hoping beyond hope that it was actually a door. Looking through the visor, I put my hand over a small, barely visible orange rectangle about waist high. It felt like a hand pull! I tried to move it, and it slid a little to the left. It was a door! I slid it open a little more but still couldn’t see anything, even through the visor.

Author Bio:

Powers Molinar grew up in the northern suburbs of Chicago and earned engineering and business degrees at the University of Iowa. While he works as a process engineer and project manager during the day, his passion is writing science fiction. His first novel, Spartanica, is the culmination of several year's of part-time effort mostly late at night and on weekends when he wasn't enjoying time with his wife and kids, all of whom were big helpers getting Spartanica written. Powers believes every kid has the potential to become exceptional. In addition to being a blast to read, he truly hopes his books spark kids' imaginations and inspire them to read more and maybe even become writers. Being a solid reader is a foundational piece of leading an exceptional life. Powers hopes his books can be part of that foundation for as many kids as possible.
