Interview with Majanka Verstraete

Today we're joining the FRACTURED book tour and speaking with author Majanka Verstaete. Don't forget to enter the giveaway at the end of the interview for your chance to win a cool prize!

Welcome to We Do Write, Majanka. Tell us a bit about yourself.

Thank you for having me over on We Do Write! Well, my name is Majanka, and I live in Belgium. I’m 23 years old, and I’m currently studying law at university. Writing has been my passion for as long as I can remember – from the moment I could write, I spent time writing stories. I’ve always been obsessed by the paranormal as well. I love reading ghost stories, articles about unexplained phenomena and mysteries. Everything that’s unsolved or unexplained, I want to solve.

How long have you been writing?

I’ve been writing on and off since I was about seven years old. Of course, the stories I wrote back then weren’t all that good – go figure. I got serious about writing about two years ago.

Tell us about FRACTURED. What’s the story about?

Seventeen-year-old Piper discovers an antique mirror on the attic of her new home. She brings it downstairs and hangs it in her bedroom, but ever since, weird things start to happen. She starts hearing disembodied voices, items move all by their own, and a weird figure lurks in the shadowy corners of her bedroom. Piper does some investigating as to what’s going on, along with her best friend Alison, and the two girls find out that the mirror preys on the guilty. Now Piper has plenty of guilty feelings about stuff that happened in the past, but is that enough to activate the mirror, or is something else going on?

Piper has to get to the bottom of the mystery. The last girl haunted by the mirror ended up killing herself, and Piper may be next.

How did the idea of the story come to you?

I saw a gorgeous picture of a haunted mirror online, and then I got the inspiration for the story. Mirrors have always fascinated me. In Victorian times, people believed mirrors were portals, and if someone passed away, you had to cover all the mirrors in the house, or they’d get trapped inside. I understand where those Victorians were coming from! When you look in a mirror for too long, it can get pretty creepy. Mirrors at night, especially. So the mirror was the main inspiration for the story.

Do you have a critique group/partner or beta readers, or do you self-edit?

I do a mix of both. For “Fractured”, I didn’t have any critique partners or beta readers, so I did some self-editing. Thankfully it went through a lot of editing rounds with InkSpell, or it wouldn’t have been all that great, trust me. For my children’s books, I tend to self-edit as well.

But nowadays, when I write young adult, I have a few critique partners ready to help out and give comments on my work. Their input is great, and they can point out mistakes I would’ve never caught myself!
I’m also looking for some beta readers for some of my novels.

Are you a plotter or a pantser?

I’m a mix of both. Some books I’ve completely plotted before beginning to write, others are just an idea, and then I write from there. I prefer combining both techniques in one novel though – plotting most of it beforehand, but when creativity takes over control, just go with the flow and write whatever comes to me.

What’s the hardest part of writing for you?

Editing. If there was some magical formula that all my first drafts would be perfect, I’d absolutely use it. I don’t mind editing when edits come from my editors, but when they come from critique partners, and require me to do a lot of revising/rewriting, well…that doesn’t make me a happy camper. An editor never asked me to revise a whole chapter or anything, but I imagine if they would, I wouldn’t be happy either. Of course, those revisions can really make the plot better, but it’s just not something I enjoy. I love drafting, but editing is, well, not as much fun.

What do you absolutely have to have nearby when writing?

Nothing, really. I can write about anywhere, when creativity hits. Of course I need a computer to write, so I’ll go for computer. Some things help, like tea (I love sipping tea while working), a scribble pad and a thesaurus, but it’s not absolutely necessary.

If you could have any super power, what would it be?

That all the stories I imagine in my mind magically appear on paper, in novel-format. That would be absolutely amazing. Or flying. I’ve always wanted to be able to fly.

What's the weirdest thing you've googled?

That would probably be that time I googled for how long it takes for a body to rot, and well, completely decompose until no more is left but bones. After that, I wanted to know how long it was possible for a body to go without decomposing. All in the name of book research, I swear!

Quick writing test! Use the following words in a sentence: fractured, image, and rescue.

She stared at the fractured ice below, cracks meandering below her feet. Her image stared back at her, lips twisted in a silent scream, eyes wide, all colour drained from her skin, leaving her as pale as a rotting corpse. The ice squeaked. If only someone would be around, someone to see the ice attacking her, who’d run over and try to rescue her. But the forest was abandoned, and she’d been the only one out on the river today. The ground disappeared from under her feet, and she fell into the pitch-black water.

Very cool! Finish this sentence: If I'm not writing, I'm probably ...

Studying, reading or playing a video game. I have tons of hobbies, so tons of possibilities there. Studying isn’t as much as a hobby as it’s a necessity though.

Here’s the part where you thank the people who are supporting you. Let's hear your shout outs.

My biggest supporter is my Mom. So, thanks Mom. But then there’s also the rest of my family, my boyfriend, my friends and the lovely people working for my publishers. Thanks, everyone.

And thank you, my never-silent muse, because without you, I wouldn’t have the inspiration to write anything at all.

And finally, where can people find you and your books online?

I have a website, because that’s what all the cool kids have. You can find my website here: http://majankaverstraete.com
I’m also on Twitter and Facebook.
You can purchase a copy of Fractured here:
If you’d like a free example of my writing, there’s a prequel short story for “Fractured”, which is available for download on the InkSpell Publishing website.

Book Excerpt: The Courtlight Series by Terah Edun

Today we're taking a look at the Courtlight Series by Terah Edun. Plus, there's a tour-wide giveaway, so keep reading until the end! Here's an exciting excerpt from the series.

Excerpt

“Where have you been?” said Ciardis, not looking up. The blood had already turned the bucket water red, though there were still spots to clean up.  She didn’t see Stephanie watching her as she finished cleaning off the cross bolt that Stephanie had removed from the dead man’s chest with a handkerchief from Ciardis’s nightstand.

“Away,” the woman said. “Training.”

“With whom?”

“You ask a lot of questions.”

“And you evade all of my answers,” said Ciardis pointedly.

She put the clean crossbolt back into the bow and primed it to fire.

“Not unintentionally.”

Ciardis dropped the last rag in the bucket and raised an irritated eyebrow.

“Look, you come in here criticizing the way I handle things—”

“And saved your life.”

“And want me to do things your way,” Ciardis continued without pause. “But you won’t tell me what the way is or how you knew about the duke’s man.”

Standing up, Stephanie tossed her an irritated look. “The duke’s man was obvious—the Duke of Cinnis hasn’t been subtle in his loathing of you ever since you revealed that he cheated on his wife.”

“Why does everyone focus on that?” Ciardis said, her temper rising, “He was trying to assassinate Sebastian, but does anyone mention that? No! It’s always, ‘Oh, that evil Ciardis, she exposed him in bed with another woman.’”

Eighteen-year-old companion trainee Ciardis Weathervane has won the friendship of the royal heir and saved his claim to the throne. The inhabitants of the forest, magic-wielding non-humans, are defiant. They have not forgotten their long struggles nor are they content to watch as the last of their lands perish. Interview with Cole Gibsen

Today, I have the pleasure of interviewing Cole Gibsen, author of KATANA and SENSHI, and also a member of the Scene 13 blog!

Thank you for joining us, Cole. Tell us a bit about yourself.

Hi! I’m a professional dog trainer who has trained dogs for both police and the military, I sing and play harmonica in a cover band, I love to sew, and my nail polish is always chipped.

You must be very busy! With all of that, it's amazing you get your nails painted at all.  I'm impressed.

How long have you been writing?

I’ve been writing ever since the fifth grade when Mrs. Lochman had write daily in writing journals. I always wanted to be a writer, but because of my dyslexia I didn’t have the confidence to actively pursue the career until several years ago.

Thank goodness for awesome teachers. Tell us about SENSHI. What’s the story about?

SENSHI is the sequel to KATANA which is about a seventeen-year-old girl who gets possessed by the spirit of a fifteenth-century samurai.

That sounds so cool! I have a bit of a soft spot for the martial arts. How did the idea of the story come to you?

The idea actually came to me after having my ass handed to me in a taekwondo sparring match. I remember sitting on the sidelines nursing a black eye and wishing the spirit of Bruce Lee would possess me long enough to win a match.

Ha! Well, at least something good came out of that black eye. Do you have a critique group/partner or beta readers, or do you self-edit?

I absolutely have critique partners—I’d be lost without them!

Are you a plotter or a pantser?

It’s interesting because I used to be a pantser, but now that I have deadlines I’ve found I work so much better with an outline to use as a guideline. I don’t always stick to the outline, but it keeps me from getting totally off track.

What’s the hardest part of writing for you?

For me personally, the hardest part is not letting my internal editor get the best of me. Growing up, I had someone in my life that was an incredibly negative influence. The result of that is, even to this day, my self confidence is a little shaky. So while I’m writing sometimes my internal editor with whisper things like, “This sucks!” or “You’re such a joke of a writer.” And it can be pretty hard sometimes to ignore that voice and plow ahead.

That internal editor can be a blessing and a curse, for sure. What do you absolutely have to have nearby when writing?

My notebook. I like to handwrite a summary of every scene I write before I write on the computer.

If you could have any super power, what would it be?

Flying! I was in a car accident several years ago that left me a little fearful of interstate travel. How awesome would it be to just go outside, but off from the ground, and be off?

What's the weirdest thing you've googled?

Oh geez, I have to pick just one? I was recently working on a short story involving a search and rescue team so I was researching decomposition. Interestingly enough, a decomposing pig is the closest scent you can get to decomposing human. The more you know, right?

Quick writing test! Use the following words in a sentence: sword, gown, and reluctant.

I was reluctant, but I hacked at the gown draped across my bed with my sword anyway, because there was no way I was going to let that spider get away.

Eww... I'd hack at that spider, too!
Finish this sentence: If I'm not writing, I'm probably ...

dog training.

Who would you like to thank for supporting you through your writing journey?

Oh my goodness, so many people. My crit partners (Brad, Teresa, Sarah, and Michelle), my awesome agent Nicole Resciniti, and all the awesome writerly peeps from my debut group the Apocalypsies.

And finally, where can people find you and your books online?

You can find my books on Amazon, indiebound, as well as Barnes and Noble.

Interview with Phaedra Seabolt

Happy Friday, everyone! Let's chime in the weekend by chatting with author Phaedra Seabolt. Phaedra's here today as part of her blog tour to talk about her new adult paranormal novel, IMPERFECTION.

Welcome to We Do Write. Tell us a bit about yourself.

I am a stay at home mom of one with another on the way. My husband and I have been trying to sell our house for almost 5 years now. Pretty much my life revolves around my family, house, writing, and reading for book reviews.

How long have you been writing?

I like to say I have been writing my whole life. I have a master's degree which means I spent a lot of time in school where I was constantly writing. It just was academic writing instead of creative. I have only been writing creatively for a year.

Tell us about IMPERFECTION. What’s the story about?

Well it's about a college girl named Meara Falk. She's nerdy and overweight, not the standard Miami University student. She's also a very good girl, meaning she does everything mommy and daddy tell her to do. However, she decides to break the rules one night and ends up in bed with a complete stranger. Her single indiscretion results in a baby. Her life starts spiraling out of control at this point. She gets attacked by a werewolf and her baby is stolen from her by a rival werewolf pack. Now she is on a mission to get her son back.

How did the idea of the story come to you?

Through a dream! I had just finished reading Stephanie Nelson's Taming the Wolf and was dreaming about werewolves. One night I woke up from a dream that I just had to write down.

Do you have a critique group/partner or beta readers, or do you self-edit?

My long time best friend is always the first person to read my work. She is amazing with grammar. After her, I had a few people from a writing group I am in read it. Finally it went to my publisher and editor.

Are you a plotter or a pantser?

A little of both. I wrote down a very short outline before I started writing, but while writing I let my characters tell me where they wanted to go.

What’s the hardest part of writing for you?

Time. It's hard to make enough time to write everything down when I think if it due to chasing a toddler around.

What do you absolutely have to have nearby when writing?

A really big drink, and I don't mean alcoholic. I hate having to get up to refill my drink while writing.

If you could have any super power, what would it be?

Teleportation. I would be one happy person if I could eliminate all my driving without giving up visiting my family.

What's the weirdest thing you've googled?

Ummm...I really don't know. I use google daily so it is hard to remember what I have searched for. I really couldn't say.

Quick writing test! Use the following words in a sentence: perfect, imp, and affection.

If there were such a thing as a perfect imp, Sadonicles would claim to be it with one exception, his ultimate flaw of showing affection.

Finish this sentence: If I'm not writing, I'm probably ...

Watching my son play with his toys.

Here’s the part where you thank the people who are supporting you. Let's hear your shout outs.

I definitely have to thank my best friend Raechel Moermond for helping me with the initial editing process. Also, my husband for listening to me ramble and helping me fill in the details of my ideas. My entire family for supporting me in this endeavor. I also have to thank the authors that encouraged me to write a book in the first place: Mandie Stevens, C.G. Powell, Tawdra Kandle, Melissa Lummis, Liz Schulte, Jessica Gibson, and Lola James. Without them, I may not have taken myself seriously. In that list of authors is also my publisher and editor, whom I am eternally grateful to. Finally thanks to Stephanie Nelson for inspiring me and making the cover. I hope I haven't left anyone out and if I did I am sorry.

And finally, where can people find you and your books online?

Happy Book Birthday: Until it Hurts to Stop by Jennifer Hubbard

Check out UNTIL IT HURTS TO STOP by Jennifer Hubbard, which releases today!

When you can’t trust anyone, how can you ever feel safe?

In seventh grade, Maggie Camden was the class outcast. Every day, the other girls tripped her, pinched her, trapped her in the bathroom, told her she would be better off dead. Four years have passed since then, and Maggie’s tormentors seem to have moved on. The ringleader of them all, Raleigh Barringer, even moved out of town. But Maggie has never stopped watching for attacks, and every laugh still sounds like it’s at her expense. The only time Maggie feels at peace is when she’s hiking up in the mountains with her best friend, Nick. Lately, though, there’s a new sort of tension between the two of them—a tension both dangerous and delicious. But how can Maggie expect anything more out of Nick when all she’s ever been told is that she’s ugly, she’s pathetic, she’s unworthy of love? And how can she ever feel safe, now that Raleigh Barringer is suddenly—terrifyingly—back in town?
