Girl in the Shadows Blog Tour: Interview with Gwenda Bond

Today we're chatting with author Gwenda Bond as part of the GIRL IN THE SHADOWS blog tour. Come get to know more about Gwenda and her book.

Gwenda Bond is the author of the young adult novels Lois Lane: Fallout and Girl on a Wire, among others. Lois Lane: Double Down and Girl in the Shadows, a companion novel to Girl on a Wire set in the Cirque American, are next up in 2016. She’s also hard at work on some secret projects you don’t know about yet.

Her nonfiction writing has appeared in Publishers Weekly, Locus Magazine, the Los Angeles Times, and many other publications. She has an MFA in writing from the Vermont College of Fine Arts. She lives in a hundred-year-old house in Lexington, Kentucky, with her husband, author Christopher Rowe. There are rumors she escaped from a screwball comedy, and she might have a journalism degree because of her childhood love of Lois Lane. Visit her online at www.gwendabond.com or @gwenda on Twitter.

Hi, Gwenda! Welcome to We Do Write. Tell our readers a bit about GIRL IN THE SHADOWS. What’s the story about?

Girl in the Shadows is about Moira Mitchell, who wants to be the first female magician to be as well known as Houdini or David Copperfield or her famous Las Vegas magician father. But when her father forbids her from pursuing magic as a career, she runs away and auditions for the Cirque American...where things get more complicated after she discovers she can do real magic and that it has something to do with her mysterious absent mother.

Goodreads | Amazon

Sounds awesome! How did the idea of the story come to you?

The Cirque American and the novel this is a companion to, Girl on a Wire, grew out of my long obsession with all things circus. But in addition to that, I’ve always been obsessed with all things stage magic and somewhat frustrated there aren’t more successful, feted female magicians. So when I was thinking about the next story to tell in the Cirque American world, writing about that seemed like a natural fit.

Are you a plotter or a pantser?

I’ve become more of an outliner and planner as I’ve written more novels. My Lois Lane series requires me to turn in detailed outlines up front, and so that’s strengthened my skills on that front. But no matter how much pre-work I do, there are always surprises in the writing itself. Which is as it should be!

What’s the hardest part of writing for you?

Drafting! It’s so far from where I ultimately want it to be that writing the first draft is often painful for me. I think this is the reason so many of us focus on word count when we’re drafting. It’s a tangible daily or weekly sign that someday we’ll have that draft and be able to fix it.

What do you absolutely have to have nearby when writing?

My computer. ;)

Haha. If you could have any super power, what would it be?

Teleportation! I get stuck in airports a lot.

What's the weirdest thing you've googled?

Hmmm… I’m not sure of the answer for ever but this week I’ve been research mythologically monstrous children.

Finish this sentence: If I'm not writing, I'm probably …

Walking the dogs.

Here’s the part where you thank the people who are supporting you. Let's hear your shout outs.

Oh my, how long do you have? But seriously I’m very lucky to have a husband, Christopher Rowe, who is also a writer and really gets it and supports me. My parents, definitely. And of course my agent Jenn Laughran and all the editors I work with. Booksellers, librarians and ALL MY READERS. I could go on. I’m very lucky.

Thanks so much for stopping by the blog!

Thanks for hosting me!

“Have you ever faced something so horrible in your life?” Dion asked Lilly. “Have you ever been in a situation where any decision you made could turn out bad? I worry I’m approaching this whole thing wrong and I need some guidance. But the only guidance I get is from my dead grandparents and they don’t seem to stick around very long.”

“At least I can smoke outside.”

They turned to see the funny little Englishman, this time in a tailored business suit, with a pipe in one hand. He inhaled the fumes one final time and placed it back in his pocket.

“No one seems to mind pipes so far. This tobacco is beastly; I need to get a better variety. They say it will be the death of me, you know. This tobacco. Can’t understand why. I thought it was invented by the natives in this country and they seemed to be a healthy people.”

“You have a way of appearing at the most charming times,” Dion said. “Did you know that that floor polisher almost had me arrested for theft?”

“But it worked, didn’t it? The ghouls couldn’t stand the noise created by it. They’re sensitive to light and noise. I almost gave you a camera with a flash to take down there, but I felt it would be better to let you have the floor polisher since the operation of it was simple. By the time you solved the method of using a flash on a camera, it would’ve been too late.”

“It did work to keep the ghouls at bay,” Lilly pointed out. “Besides, the ghouls had mirror shades.”

“So now have you shown up to give me some wisdom?” Dion asked Edward.

“I can’t dispense what I lack,” Edward laughed.

“Then what ever shall I do?” Dion asked with a fake southern accent.

“Both of you are talking in circles,” Lilly said. “Edward, why can’t you just get to the point?”

“Because it would be too easy. And the longer I drag this encounter out, the longer I get to wear this suit and smoke my pipe. It’s the little things you miss once you’ve passed over.”

“You’ve never told us why you are involved,” Dion snapped. “Why didn’t they send Isaac Newton or Julius Cesar to help out?”

“Well, Mr. Newton would spend the entire time tracing out sun patterns. And what good is Julius Cesar without an army? I’m sorry, you are stuck with me. I made many mistakes the first time around. This is their way of giving me a chance to fix what I broke.”

Dion folded his arms. “We’re going to walk through those doors and Officer Karanzen and his good squad will be waiting for us. What do I do when that happens? I need to get to the Earth Element Grandmaster and have her blessing. I can’t approach the next element grandmaster until I have done it.”

“It’s not Karanzen you have to worry about; it’s the earth elementals who don’t want you obtaining full power. The ghouls in particular. They’re furious you’ve made them look bad to the mall owners and will do everything they can to keep you from reaching the elemental grandmaster.”

Lilly took a step forward. “Are they going to pull that cleaning crew stunt again?” she asked him. “Because I don’t want to deal with it again. Our friend Emily will never come back to this mall and I think she may be scared for life.”

“They’ll try something else this time, and they may be very direct how they do it. I would watch out because you have no idea where they will strike. And, rest assured, the security guards will be nowhere to be found if you need their help.”

Dion looked at the doors and took Lilly by the hand. “Okay,” he said to them both. “I can do this. It looks like I’m the only one who can get my parents back, and prevent even worse things from happening.”

Edward raised a hand. “You can’t even conceive what you’re up against. I would tell you more, but they only let me share so much information. But I’m sure you’ll come through, dear boy. In fact, you must…”

Edward pulled out his pocket watch again and looked at it. “Oh, lovely, time is up. You two take care and I will see you again.”

Then he vanished.

Publisher: Kensington YA
Publication: June 28, 2016
“The mother I knew would never do those things. But maybe I never knew her after all.” Clothes, jokes, coded messages…Cecilia Brooks and her mom shared everything. At least, CeCe thought they did. Six months ago, her mom killed herself after accusations of having sex with a student, and CeCe’s been the subject of whispers and taunts ever since. Now, at the start of her high school senior year, between dealing with her grieving, distracted father, and the social nightmare that has become her life, CeCe just wants to fly under the radar. Instead, she’s volunteering at the school’s crisis hotline—the same place her mother worked. As she counsels troubled strangers, CeCe’s lingering suspicions about her mom’s death surface. With the help of Sam, a new student and newspaper intern, she starts to piece together fragmented clues that point to a twisted secret at the heart of her community. Soon, finding the truth isn’t just a matter of restoring her mother’s reputation, it’s about saving lives—including CeCe’s own…

Excerpt from The Darkest Lie

“I’ve been researching the story of her suicide,” Sam says. “And I came across something in my research that nobody could explain.” “What is it?” I say dully, even though I can probably guess. I mean, there’s lots that’s inexplicable about my mom’s behavior. Tons. Like: How could a grown woman be sexually attracted to a boy? Or more importantly: Why would she act on it? And my personal favorite: Did she have any kind of moral fiber—even a few lost threads—at all? But Sam bypasses all the obvious questions and picks up a lock of my hair. I feel the slight tug all the way to my roots. “Her hair.” He rubs my strands between his fingers, and I suppress a shiver. “It was chopped off, jagged. One article said it looked like it was lopped off with a butcher knife.” I shrug, but even that simple movement is infused with the awareness of his touch. Still, he doesn’t let go. “They said she was crazy,” I say. “Out of her mind. Maybe she was disfiguring herself as a sign of her shame. Who knows what motivated her actions?” But even as I repeat the explanation the detectives gave for just about everything, my dad’s words echo in my mind: I knew your mother. She wasn’t capable of those things. I don’t believe she did any of it. All of a sudden, my excuses sound exactly like what they are—easy, surface-level assumptions designed to make it easier for the detectives to close the case. Sam frowns. “I guess I could buy that if I hadn’t seen the interview with her hair stylist in one of the local papers.” Oh. One of those. Every newspaper in a fifty-mile radius went berserk when my mom committed suicide. Every day, there was a new article, featuring interviews with her fellow teachers, former students, even our lawn guy, for god’s sake. If there was a story on her hair salon, I must’ve missed it. “The stylist kept saying your mom’s haircut was inconceivable, and I couldn’t understand why. So when I was scooting past Cut & Dry the other day, I stopped to talk to her.” “Did she confirm my mom was a natural redhead?” I raise my eyebrows. “Reveal the exact color of dye she used to cover her silver sparkles?” “Not at all,” he says, and something about his tone stops me. The chill begins at the base of my spine and crawls its way up, one long spider leg at a time. “The stylist said she’s been cutting your mom’s hair for two decades. And in all that time, your mother never let her cut more than half an inch. In fact, she came into the salon two days before she died, and they had the exact same argument. The stylist tried to talk her into a bob, and your mom adamantly refused.” Abruptly, he lets go of my hair, and the strands swing back over my shoulder, loose, unencumbered, and very, very cold. Sam’s eyes pierce right into me. “So what I want to know is: What could’ve happened in two days that made her change her mind? Unless . . . she didn't.”

Elemental Secrets
Elle Middaugh
(The Essential Elements, #1)
Publication date: February 27th 2016
Genres: Fantasy, Young Adult
Valerie Moore was a beautiful, headstrong girl with below-average social skills and above-average anxiety (including a flair for over-analyzing).
With her mother long deceased, and her father recently deployed, she ends up being sent to live with her eccentric aunt in a tiny town nestled in the mountains of Pennsylvania. But, being a Navy brat had made her into a bit of a loner, and making friends certainly wasn’t her strongest suit. As if the life of a typical teen wasn’t hard enough.
But Valerie soon discovers she’s not a typical teenager. Not by a long shot.
SECRETS are revealed…
…About her family, about her newfound friends and relationships, and about her whole world… Things that have been kept from her for her entire life…
But the biggest secret of all is revealed when Valerie discovers that she has Elemental powers, and a chain of inexplicable and irrevocable events unleashes throughout the little town…
Excerpt

Just then, Jay leapt from his chair. He froze and cocked an ear toward the tree line. “Did you hear that?” he asked us. “Turn the music off.”
Chase bolted to the speakers, and just as he killed the music, the impossible happened. Suddenly, the entire bonfire snuffed out all at once. No warning, no smoke. Just poof, total darkness.
“Chase!” Holden yelled.
“On it!” he shouted back quickly as the fire rose back up out of the ashes, brighter than before, casting light back through the alcove.
“Sienna, get her out of here,” Holden demanded as he lifted us out of the chair. He kissed me, then pulled me out of the way of a falling tree limb. “Go! I’ll meet you back at my house as soon as I can.”
More branches fell all around me as I sprinted after Sienna. The world was sloshing around like a drink as I ran. I felt heavy and weightless at the same time, and the ground seemed to latch and loosen around my feet, as if it couldn’t quite decide whether to trip me or not. I nearly fell at least a dozen times, but a sudden gust of wind consistently kept me upright. I might’ve been drunk, but this was the strangest weather pattern I’d ever seen… Global-mother-fucking-warming.
There was an explosion. I stumbled to a halt on my hands and knees and glanced back. Half of the woods were on fire, fueled by a vengeful wind that pushed it wildly through the trees. Holden! I turned to run back, but Sienna grabbed my arm.
“He’s fine, Valerie, I promise! Let’s go!”
No one is fine, Sienna! The whole damn forest is burning!” The panic overtaking my system was fueled by adrenaline, but it burned through the alcohol in my blood as well. I needed to get to Holden. It was the only thing I knew through the chaos.
Then suddenly, the flames doused out. Hot steam rising from the bark was the only reminder that they were ever alight.
What. The. Hell!?
I had never been more terrified in my entire life. I had no idea how to explain the shit that I’d just seen, except for ‘global warming’, or ‘being drunk’. Or, worst of all, ‘supernatural’ crossed my mind, and what the hell kind of explanation was that?
“Valerie! Run!” Sienna cried as it began to rain.
No, it was pouring, and I could sense that it was freezing cold, even if I couldn’t feel it. In fact, it was freezing. Balls of hail soared to the earth like rockets, as if they weighed more than they should, or like gravity had been multiplied.
Finally, my feet kicked into action. I righted myself and ran once more toward Holden’s house.
When I shot from the woods, I wanted to drop to the pavement and cry, or puke, or scream, but I was too afraid a tree might lean over and pummel me, so I ran until I burst through the front door.
Sienna grabbed my hand and led me upstairs; she didn’t know where Holden’s room was any more than I did, but she kept looking until she found it. Once inside, she shut the door and locked it behind us.
The feel of the room seemed very Holden, like a blustery day at an elegant beach. The carpeting was a sandy tan color and the walls were a pale windy gray. Everything was accented with a crisp white. His bed was intricate and huge, maybe Victorian, and looked soft enough to swallow you up. I wanted to curl up in his sheets, get lost in his cologne, and pretend that everything was normal and fine.
But it wasn’t, and Holden was still out there. The fear churning in my gut was making me nauseous, so I started pacing. “What the hell just happened, Sienna?”
She had slunk to the floor and was now leaning with her back against the white bedroom door. She thoughtfully pursed her lips as she looked away. “I’m not exactly sure.”
“Not ‘exactly’?” I repeated with narrowed eyes. “So you do, at least, have an idea?”
She grimaced, but glanced at me softly. “Yes.”
I threw my hands in the air as I wore a path into the carpet. “Then please explain this shit! The bonfire went out like a light, then flipped back on just as easily. The trees were on fire, and then they just suddenly weren’t! Tree limbs were falling everywhere. Rain turned into hail—in September! I mean, what the hell!?”
Her mouth opened, then closed, and she shook her head. “I…can’t.”
“You sound just like Cade!” I shouted angrily.
“I’m sure I do!” She stood and plopped down in Holden’s desk chair. “I don’t want to make a case for the guy, but you have to understand, Valerie. Some things, inexplicable things, are forbidden to be revealed or explained.”
“Well I guess somebody screwed up on the ‘revealed’ part, huh?”
“Yeah, your boy Cade.”
“I have no idea what the hell you’re talking about; Cade was nowhere to be seen!”

Sienna pointed a finger. “Seen being the operative word.”
