How I Ruined My Life Tour: Interview with TL Bainter PLUS Giveaway

Today we're joining the HOW I RUINED MY LIFE tour by chatting with author T.L. Bainter. Come get to know more about this book, and be sure to enter the rafflecopter at the end of the post.

Hi and welcome to We Do Write. Tell us a bit about yourself.
Hi there! I’m T. L. Bainter, author of How I Ruined My Life and owner of a very rambunctious Savannah cat named Sooba. I work as a Data Center technician full-time, and spend my days off writing, reading, and visiting Kansas City’s many local coffee shops.
Tell our readers a bit about HOW I RUINED MY LIFE.
How I Ruined My Life is a YA literary novel about the vital role friendship can play in our lives. The story follows Kyle Barnes, a plain, quiet, reclusive teenager that finds his life turned upside down when he becomes friends with James Porter. With his newfound friend, Kyle experiences life as he never thought he could - for better or for worse.
How did the idea of the story come to you?
The book is very strongly based on my own experiences as a young adult. In my adolescence, I was extremely reclusive and very quiet. Several experiences changed that and helped me grow as a person, shaping the man that I am today. How I Ruined My Life is essentially a slightly embellished version of my childhood.
Are you a plotter or a pantser?
I’d say I’m a bit of both! With How I Ruined My Life, I wrote a very vague plot synopsis and then sat down to write. The book ultimately wound up being very different from the initial synopsis, with some parts being removed and others being added. If I feel the story moving in a direction other than the one that the outline wishes to take it, then I ignore the outline completely.
What’s the hardest part of writing for you?
Revision. I think just about any author will tell you the same thing, since it seems to be the most painstaking part of the process. I can write ten thousand words over the course of two days, and then take a month to read and revise those very same words.
What do you absolutely have to have nearby when writing?
A cup of coffee. If I can’t mull over my writing while sipping coffee, then I find myself rather uninspired. Sometimes it’s whiskey, depending on whether or not it’s a work night.
If you could have any super power, what would it be?
Have you ever watched the show Misfits? I would love to have Curtis Donovan’s power from that show. It’s sort of like time travel, but only takes him backward except in cases of power-reversal (which occurs while under the influence of ecstasy in the show).

I probably thought too hard about this one.
What's the weirdest thing you've googled?
I feel the need to reiterate that I’m a writer; I use Google to research some pretty terrible things in the name of writing. I think that the worst/weirdest thing that I’ve ever researched with Google is the human response to beheading, or: “What happens when you’re beheaded?”
I learned a lot, so it was worth having the bizarre question in my search history.
Finish this sentence: If I'm not writing, I'm probably …
Hanging out at a local coffee shop, or going for a walk. I love my city, and find a lot of inspiration for my writing when I’m out and about.
Here’s the part where you thank the people who are supporting you. Let's hear your shout outs.
I received immense support during the first stages of How I Ruined My Life, and individuals continue to support me in my endeavors to make this book successful. Obviously I have to give a shoutout to my mother and grandmother, who have both read all of the ridiculous stories I’ve ever written. Without their perseverance, I may never have reached this point. I also want to thank the individuals that inspired my story, namely best friend, Ben Schoonover, whom I miss greatly.

Thanks so much for stopping by the blog!

EXCERPT:
“Whoa,” she said, jumping away from the burst of heat and flame. “That went up a little faster than I expected.” She reached the edge of the rack with her toe and forced it beneath the boiler.
Another rumble and crack echoed from the corridor behind them. Jacob turned around in time to see Drakkar come running back into the station, his cloak rising in the breeze behind him.
“Scythe Beetles!”
Jacob swung the air cannon off his back and racked the slide.
“Jacob, Alice!” Samuel’s voice rang with authority. “Fall back with Smith. If you need to use the cannon, use it at the last second. You don’t want to injure a Scythe Beetle. You want to kill it.”
Drakkar’s arm snapped out to the side, and his sword unfolded with a rapid series of clicks.
There was a calamity behind the Cave Guardian, and it grew louder with every second. Jacob and Alice scrambled off the railcar. Jacob paused and then ran to the pump to turn it off. The last thing they needed was wet fuel bars.
Alice made it to Smith ten steps before Jacob did. Samuel and Drakkar set up a loose line between the railcar and a steeper section of the shattered wall.
Smith spoke into his transmitter. “Mary! Get the chaingun down here now!
Her static-laced reply came back in an incoherent burst.
“Chaingun! Now!”
Mary cursed and began shouting orders before she stopped transmitting.
Drakkar had the best view of the corridor, and everyone tensed when he said, “Here they come.”
The iron gate in the stone hall collapsed at the first impact. The metal rattled and screeched as it was twisted and trampled. The creatures were not very fast, but once they were moving, nothing seemed to stop them.
They ran on three-toed claws, the spikes on their legs tearing through stone and rending metal as they crashed onto the platform. Jacob watched in awe and horror as the front most beetle paused, and its back split open. A pair of leathery wings extended from beneath the carapace and gleamed in the rising moonlight.

Author Bio:
Eric is a former bookseller, guitarist, and comic seller currently living in Saint Louis, Missouri. A lifelong enthusiast of books, music, toys, and games, he discovered a love for the written word after being dragged to the library by his parents at a young age. Released Blog Tour: Interview with Jus Accardo

Today we're joining the RELEASED blog tour by chatting with author Jus Accardo. Sit back and get to know all about Jus and her books.
Jus Accardo is the author of YA paranormal romance and urban fantasy fiction. A native New Yorker, she lives in the middle of nowhere with her husband, three dogs, and sometimes guard bear, Oswald. When not writing, Jus can be found volunteering at the local animal shelter or indulging her passion for food. After being accepted to the Culinary Institute of America, she passed on the spot to pursue a career in writing and has never looked back. As far as she’s concerned, she has the coolest job on earth—making stuff up for a living.

Hi, Jus! Welcome to We Do Write.
*waves* Thanks for having me!
Tell our readers a bit about RELEASED.
Released is the final book in the Eternal Balance series. It’s a spin on the story of Cain and Abel. I won’t say too much in case some people aren’t caught up with the series, but in the last book, we see everything that’s happened over the last month come to a head. Everything is at risk for Jax and Sam—and I loved writing every minute ;) Right from day one I knew how I wanted this series to end, and am thrilled to have had the opportunity to follow it through! I hope everyone will be as happy with how things turned out as I was.
Sounds awesome. How did the idea of the story come to you?
The basis for the series came after a conversation with a friend about the story of Cain and Abel.
Are you a plotter or a pantser?
I used to be hardcore panster, but one of my more recent books had a very complicated world and required a lot of intricate world building. I think now, after that, I fall someplace in the middle.
What’s the hardest part of writing for you?
It changes from book to book. Sometimes getting the story out is easy, and editing is hard. Sometimes it’s the other way around.
What do you absolutely have to have nearby when writing?
Coffee! Furry, snoring foot warmers don’t hurt, either.
Ooh, I'll have to look into those. If you could have any super power, what would it be?
I think I’d love to have the ability to teleport. I’m a horrible traveler. To be able to snap my fingers, blink my eyes—whatever—and just BE there…that’d be epic!
I hear you. I'm a horrible traveler too. That would certainly help. What's the weirdest thing you've googled?
Hmm. I’ve searched for everything from weird foods (which may not sound really bad, but try it. Just once. I dare you) to the embalming process.
Finish this sentence: If I'm not writing, I'm probably ...
Either baking, hiking with my dogs, or playing World of Warcraft
Here’s the part where you thank the people who are supporting you. Let's hear your shout outs.
A huge thank you to everyone who’s picked up one of my books. Your time is precious, and there are limitless options in the book world. Thank you for spending some time with mine! I wish I could hug every single one of you! :D
Thanks so much for stopping by the blog!

EXCERPT:

 Excerpt 1
I had heard of being possessed by demons, but I never thought I would be so lucky as to get to have the experience firsthand. Once again, I could feel my body trembling and that strange bitter saliva building in my throat. I needed an exit strategy—and fast. I’d learned to expect and accept crazy episodes, but I had hoped I could at least enjoy Rose’s birthday dinner out with my friends.
Sweat trickled down my forehead, and I pushed my chair away from the dinner table and staggered to my feet. Rose grabbed me by the forearm. She and the others had already enjoyed three bottles of Prosecco; and the night was just getting started at La Lune et La Soleil, the hot new restaurant in midtown.
Rose raised her voice above the clink of glasses and hum of conversation. “Where are you going? Jacob’s just getting to the good part. You gotta listen.”
With sweat now dripping down my cheeks and the back of my neck, I sat back down as Jacob continued with his crazy story. He’d been over served at a party a few weeks ago and jumped into a parked cop car. The keys were somehow still in the ignition, and he drove through town shouting at random people through the car’s megaphone. Then he somehow managed to escape without the local cop tracing him. He’d gotten away scot-free—so far.
The waiter brought over the first course and Ken, a good friend to both Rose and me, proposed another toast. “To the beautiful birthday girl and to another great year of us all having fun together!”
I raised my glass of sparkling water—I could barely stay sane as it was these days and was terrified to think how my body would react to alcohol, at least for now anyway. Woozily, I toasted my dearest friend as best as I could. I fought to keep my eyes from rolling into the back of my head and almost dropped my glass.
“Whoa!” Ken said. “You sure that’s just sparkling water?”
