Book Launch: Sophie's Run by Nicky Wells PLUS Giveaway

Today marks the launch of SOPHIE'S RUN by author Nicky Wells, released by Sapphire Star Publishing. Let's catch up with Nicky and find out about her new book.

Welcome back, Nicky! Tell us about what's been going on with your series since we last spoke.

Ah, Dorothy, the series is positively blooming! Sophie's Turn has been out since last September, when we last connected, and has received some fabulous reviews, some of which completely bowled me over. I get quite tearful when I get a fabulous review! Since then, I have been busy editing and polishing the second book, Sophie's Run, whose launch we're celebrating today. And I am also eighty percent through writing the final and concluding part of the Rock Star Romance Trilogy. Titled Sophie's Encore, the third book will be with you in September 2013.

As if that weren't enough, I have also been germinating ideas for book four, which will be a new start but still involve plenty of rock and roll, as you would expect from a 'rock lit' author.

Wow, sounds like an amazing series. How have the stakes been raised in the new book?

Sophie's Run has everything you want from a rocking romance, and I mean everything. Glamour, glitz, intrigue, romance, rock music, a couple of weddings, betrayal, travel, a fire, an exploding cake, a gorgeous rock star and a dashing male nurse. Have I captured your imagination yet? Brilliant! :-)

So, then. Sophie's Run continues the story of the romance between girl-next-door Sophie and rock star Dan. However, the path towards true love is never straight and even, as Sophie is about to discover. Luckily, Dan remains her rock while life takes her on... shall we say, a little detour?

Here's the blurb:

So she has finally found the man of her dreams! Well… she knows who he is, even though she hasn’t actually quite met him yet. But she misses her opportunity, and then her life goes crazy. Rock star and ex-fiancĂ©, Dan, keeps getting in the way of her new romance—even if he is just trying to be helpful. A fire, an impromptu mini-trip with Dan, and a dreaded wedding later, Sophie is still struggling to meet the love of her life. Then, just as she is getting it together with her perfect man, best friend Rachel commits an act of unspeakable betrayal.

Sophie has had enough. Confused and distraught, she decides that it is time for radical change. Surprising herself and shocking her friends, she embarks on a secret journey and eventually gets her life back on track.

Do you read the same genre you write, or do you read other genres?

I'm a voracios reader, and always have been. I read almost everything, apart from Horror and Sci-Fi. Romance and chick lit are firm favourites, but I also read contemporary fiction, crime and historical fiction.

Right now, I'm also rediscovering the un-guilty pleasure of reading The Famous Five with my children. I love watching their faces when the story develops and the gold/treasure/papers/secret passageway is about to be discovered. Speaking also from an adult's and an author's perspective, I have a totally new-found respect for how Enid Blyton manages to develop plots so quickly with foreshadowing and a fair bit of dramatic irony at a level that is accessible to children and still interesting to adults. I'm fairly certain a modern editor would accuse her of head-hopping (Insights into Timmy-the-dog's head ~ yes, they happen!) but I am loving every minute of it. I am thrilled and grateful how these books are introducing my boys to the real, intense pleasure of reading. Writing a children's book with the same impact continues to be on my bucket list!

Remind our readers where we can find you and your books.

Visit me on my blog where you can find articles, interviews, radio interviews and, of course, an ongoing update on my work in progress. You can also follow me on Twitter and find me on Facebook. I am a featured author on the innovative reader/author project, loveahappyending.com and have joined the Romantic Novelists’ Association. I also have author pages at Sapphire Star Publishing, Amazon and, of course, Goodreads.

Sophie’s Run is now available in Kindle edition from Amazon.com and Amazon.co.uk, and in Paperbackedition from Amazon.com and Amazon.co.uk. You can also get the paperback at Barnes & Noble, or downloadSophie’s Run onto your Nook (coming soon).

Interview with Lisa M Basso

Today we're talking with fabulous author Lisa M. Basso about her new book, A SHIMMER OF ANGELS.

Hi Lisa! Welcome to We Do Write. Tell us a bit about yourself.

I'm a San Francisco native who loves reading, writing, gaming, animals, baking, laughing, and texting. Yes, I'll admit it, I'm almost always glued to my phone (when I'm not glued to my laptop or my Playstation 3). One of these days I'll get a more active hobby...I swear. :)

How long have you been writing?

I've been writing off and on since I was a teenager, but I decided writing was what I wanted to do about five years ago. I haven't looked back since.

I love the cover of A SHIMMER OF ANGELS. What’s the story about?

Rayna, a sixteen-year-old girl, thought her hallucinations had ended, thought the wings she used to see were a thing of the past, along with the time she spent at a mental health clinic. She was ready to put it all behind her when an angel appears in her class and her classmate turns up dead the same day.

How did the idea of the story come to you?

The first thing that came to my mind when I decided to write a new book was YA. I wanted to try my hand at writing for teenagers. I've always had a love of wings, so putting my own twist on an angel story was kind of a given. The starting point was when I decided I wanted to pit good versus evil, white against dark. But even that got turned on its ear. The color gray appeared to me, and the idea really took off. There are lots of notes of gray in the book, the blurring of morality, and the crossing of lines my characters never thought they'd even come near. Let's just say, there's more to the story than what you may read on the surface. ;)

Sounds awesome! Are you a plotter or a pantser?

Each book I write changes the game for me. No two books ever get the same process. When I first started writing I just knew I was going to be a hardcore pantser. I mean, come on, discovering the story was the best part. Why would you want to skip ahead? It was like cheating to me. Then I started writing more and discovered how much richer a plot could be when I planned--and plotted--ahead. So, I guess you could say I'm a plotter. For now.

What’s the hardest part of writing for you?

This answer used to be editing. Funny how things change because now editing is my favorite part about writing and my previous favorite part is now the hardest. The dreaded first draft. But honestly, every part of writing is hard, and every part is amazing. It's the most rewarding job I've ever had and I hope to never have to job-switch again.

What do you absolutely have to have nearby when writing?

I prefer writing in the mornings, so a strong cup of tea, preferably chai. Anytime after that, a huge glass of room-temperature water. I try not to eat by Spartacus (my unbelievably amazing--and still quite new--laptop) if I can avoid it. That said, if Reese's pieces are nearby, watch your fingers because they are mine and will be gone in no time.

If you could have any super power, what would it be?

I would love to be able to teleport. I have all these fantastic places in my head that I would love to travel to. The problem? I hate flying. Hate, with a capital H. I've gotten better in the last few years, but that doesn't mean flying isn't a fear-inducing thing for me. It is. Teleportation would solve these problems and, let's face it, it's one bad-ass talent. I'd travel the world and be home for dinner. I could write a book set anywhere in the world and actually know where I'm writing about. Most perfect power ever.

What's the weirdest thing you've googled?

Ha! I love this one. There's the funny pics: crazy cats, flying squirrel. The music videos: Radioactive by Imagine Dragons, Blackout by Breathe Carolina, and anything by Mumford & Sons. And there's the really out there stuff the FBI would arrest me for if they looked into my book research: how to snap a neck, bullet wounds, and how to pick a lock, among many shameful others.

Quick writing test! Use the following words in a sentence: shimmer, shenanigans, and shy.

These questions are awesome. You are officially my new go-to question chick. Okay. Let's see...

Ray spots a shimmer and knows the angels are back, though she's shy, she confronts Cam—and the shenanigans are just beginning!

Awesome sentence! Finish this sentence: If I'm not writing, I'm probably ...

Um...gaming (on the Playstation 3), reading, editing, plotting (future books, in case you were wondering), scheming (yes, this covers a myriad of writing and non-writing sins), cooking, or baking.

Here’s the part where you thank the people who are supporting you. Let's hear your shout outs.

There are so many! Obviously everyone at Month9Books--Georgia, Courtney, Mandy, Rachel, Ashlynn, Kelly P. Simmon, and everyone else I've had the honor of working with so far. My fellow Month9 authors who have been nothing but amazing--seriously, the camaraderie is so great.

My mom and dad, aunts and uncles, cousins. Best friends, Lesley and Andrea. And most of all, my boyfriend. The one that takes care of me when I'm lost in a project, the one that makes me eat, drags me off the laptop when he can tell I need a break, the one that makes me laugh louder and harder than I ever thought possible.

Last, but definitely not least, the bloggers and readers. To those of you who have already written reviews of A SHIMMER OF ANGELS, and the ones who will. To those of you who are waiting by your doors for your copies to arrive. To those who are as excited about this book as I still am.

Aw. Now I'm all teary-eyed. Thanks so much everyone!

Interview with Eris Kelli

Today we're chatting with author Eris Kelli about her novel, PIPER LEVINE, A GYPSY'S TRUTH.

Welcome to We Do Write, Eris!

Thank you for having me!

How long have you been writing?

Let’s see how long has it been? I’ve been telling stories since I first started putting a pencil to paper, but if you’d rather I answer in terms of finishing my written novels, that would be seven years ago after I had my first child. I became motivated to go after my dreams so that my child would believe me when I told her she could achieve hers.

Tell us about PIPER LEVINE, A GYPSY'S TRUTH. What’s the story about?

This story is about a young woman, Piper LeVine, who has grown up in a political family and though her life wasn’t easy before she learns she has a past that began even before she was born, and it’s a past that has come looking for her.

Piper makes a deal with Nicholas, who is a gorgeous, dangerous and somewhat untrustworthy character himself. She will turn to the Gypsies and in her quest to survive, Piper will find out who she is for herself and discover what she is made of.

How did the idea of the story come to you?

Well, Piper LeVine, A Gypsy’s Truth, is not my first book, in fact it is my eighth. I got the idea for Piper’s series when I was researching the Gypsy culture for another book I was writing. I get most of my ideas while I’m learning.

Do you have a critique group/partner or beta readers, or do you self-edit?

I have four beta readers but usually use two per book, I self-edit, I put my book one page at a time through two different editing programs and then for good measure I have it edited by a professional.

What’s the hardest part of writing for you?

The hardest part of writing for me is when I am stranded on the road to get from my A to B. Sometimes when I know where I need to go, and I absolutely have to arrive at B but I am unhappy with the road options I’ve come up with. I refuse to make characters act out of character just so that I can have what I want. Therefore, it is imperative that I discover a route that is probable for my characters, so I’m not cheating. I hate it when authors cheat.
So sometimes I have to try every route I can imagine but the very most difficult part is when I cannot find an acceptable road and then the story must wait until I can discover it. During these times, I dream about it and think about it when my husband is talking, (sorry Babe!) until I find the path from A to B.

What do you absolutely have to have nearby when writing?

Music! I must have music. I don’t necessarily use it whenever I write but if I am writing a scene and I want to totally immerse myself in the scene and make it the best it can possibly be, it often time helps to have music. For example, if I’m writing a fighting scene or an intense moment, it helps if I listen to intense music. A love scene is always better with a romantic song.

If you could have any super power, what would it be?

I would love to be psychic whenever I wanted. Wait, wait hear me out! This is a good one.

For example:
“Mom, can I go out with Joe Shmoe?”
I gaze into the future and see that Joe is just trouble. “No you may not, my little love. Go out with Billy instead.” See what I’m saying?
Or!
“Should I invest in Mac’s self-cleaning toilet?” I peer into my future. “Yes, I think I will.”
Bam, my kids’ college is paid for and so will be their children’s college. Sweet!

What's the weirdest thing you've Googled?

I once Googled just the two words, How to, just to see what I could learn how to do. There is a lot of stuff to DIY out there :D. I’ve probably Googled weirder things but I recommend those two words!

Quick writing test! Use the following words in a sentence: curse, crow, and choppy.

Howard threw a choppy curse at Fredrick and now he is a crow.

How’d I do? Poor Fred.

Finish this sentence: If I'm not writing, I'm probably ...

playing with my kids, kissing my handsome husband, chasing my dog or catching up with one of my seven awesome siblings.

Here’s the part where you thank the people who are supporting you. Let's hear your shout outs.

Thank you Mom, Wendy, Ashleigh, Rachel, and Angelina for being my best readers and supporters. Thank you to my gorgeous husband who is supportive and inspiring to me. I can’t forget Sam, Jason, Chris, Jon or Andy, you guys have been a great support to me as well. Thank you to my sweet children who make me the best I can be just by letting me be your Mom.

I want to give a shout out to my AWESOME publisher GMTA, their staff especially Kitty Bullard, Kate Bainbridge my agent at GMTA, and my editor Valarie Violette, you ladies have been wonderful to work with and I’m so grateful to have such a great team! Thank you!

And finally, where can people find your book online?

Piper LeVine will be available for purchase through Amazon and Barnes & Noble.

Interview with Rhiannon Paille

Today we're chatting with author Rhiannon Paille about her novel, SURRENDER.

Welcome to We Do Write! Tell us a bit about yourself.

I read way too many books. I used to read non fiction, but a friend suggested a YA book to me and once I started I couldn't stop. I'm always looking for a good book, whether it's contemporary, fantasy, paranormal romance, dystopian or urban fantasy. My tastes vary widely depending on my mood.

And I do read minds. It's something I've been able to do since I was 16, but it took years to perfect. I consider myself a metaphysical therapist, and I help people with relationship problems most of the time.
How long have you been writing?

Tell us about SURRENDER. What’s the story about?

Here is the blurb:

How far would you go to save everything you ever loved?

Kaliel was warned about her love for the Ferryman. One day he will marry the land and leave Avristar forever. She doesn't listen, and because of what she is-- a Flame-- one of nine apocalyptic weapons, she sparks a war. In a desperate attempt to save her home and her love, Kaliel tries to awaken Avred, not knowing she may have to make the ultimate sacrifice

How did the idea of the story come to you?

I’d love to say it comes from my genius mind, but it really doesn’t. I have a penchant for studying obscure things like Celtic and Norse myths, Buddhist, Hindu, Pagan traditions, witchcraft, metaphysics, parapsychology, ecopsychology, fairies, sacred geometry, sacred places, etc. I actually own a copy of the Bhagavad Gita, which is basically the Hindu bible.

I think that because I’m eccentric, my writing reflects that.

Why did SURRENDER become a love story?

I think it was always a love story. I’m a romantic at heart, watched Romeo & Juliet about fifty times (the Leonardo DiCaprio version) when I was a teen and I’ve lived my own tragic love story. Surprisingly enough, Surrender was a very natural place for me to start my writing career because I’m so familiar with the love story and the customs of Avristar.

Which authors do you personally love and look up to?

I’m a big Cassandra Clare fan. Her books taught me that my writing is good. I know that sounds weird, but until her I hadn’t read a YA book in third person, and was worried that what I had written wouldn’t stand up against other works. She taught me that I needed to throw the rule book out the window and write the way I write and trust myself.

I also look up to Julie Kagawa, because of her excellent Iron Fey series, which blends the otherworld with this world, and makes the perfect connection between the Faery world and Earth. I also love her for Mag Tuireadh and how she’s effortlessly woven Celtic Myth into her books. I’m working on that for The Ferryman + The Flame, it just takes time.

What's the weirdest thing you've googled?

No, much better is the weirdest thing someone asked me to read . . . the potency of horse semen. The client was trying to figure out which of her horses would make a champion stallion. So yeah . . . I had to analyze . . . that, but thank God I didn't have to touch any or take it to a lab or something.

Finish this sentence: If I'm not writing, I'm probably ...

Reading minds, singing karaoke, and burning cookies.

Here’s the part where you thank the people who are supporting you. Let's hear your shout outs.

Well I need to shout out to AshMarie De La Rosa from Paranormal Reads, Frankie Rose, Jennifer LaJambe, Amy Young, Robyn Leanne Smith, and Stephanie McFadden. There are others like Natasha M. Heck and Cory Putman Oakes, but yeah . . . I have a great group!
