Book Blast: EKHO by Marie D Jones

Welcome to a rare Saturday post. We're sneaking in on your weekend as part of the EKHO blog tour. Here's the blast about Marie D Jones's cool-sounding MG novel.

EKHO by Marie D. Jones

Ten-year-old Elvis Jones is tired of being picked on, taunted, and teased by the bullies at his elementary school, so he does what any smart, technologically brilliant kid his age would do: he creates EKHO, the Evil Kid Hunting Organization, a sophisticated network of kid spies and secret agents that utilize a variety of cool gadgets to stay one step ahead of the enemy – the bullies. They hire kids, make them swear allegiance to the organization, and train them as Commandos, Privates, and Elite Spies. As kids rise through the ranks, the missions, posted on an encrypted EKHO website, require more smarts and skill, especially when the bullies form their own counterspy group called DEKE (Destroy EKHO Kids Everywhere).

It’s all in good fun, until the kids of EKHO must put their pretend skills to use for far more serious, and dangerous, missions. As field agents come across evidence of more sinister forces, they now have to deal with the strange, weird, and the unknown as they look for the truth about the bizarre and creepy threats to their school, their families, and their own lives. They experience betrayal, intrigue, infiltration and counter-espionage as well as teachers and adults who act more mysterious with each passing day, which leaves Elvis and his EKHO team wondering: who can you trust when the person standing next to you might not be entirely human?

Book Blast: Sanctuary by Pauline Creeden

sanctuary tour banner

sanctuarySanctuary by Pauline Creeden

“Left Behind for the Hunger Games Generation”
In a heart-racing thriller described as Falling Skies meets The Walking Dead, Jennie struggles to find a safe place for what’s left of her family. But it seems as though there is no place sacred, no place secure. First the aliens attacked the sun, making it dimmer, weaker, and half what it used to be. Then they attacked the water supply, killing one-third of Earth’s population with a bitter contaminate. And when they unleash a new terror on humankind, the victims will wish for death, but will not find it…When the world shatters to pieces around her, will Jennie find the strength she needs to keep going?

Praise for Sanctuary
“Pauline Creeden managed to mix more genres into one book than I could possibly imagine. The overall concept, aliens attacking the earth, is straight out of Science Fiction, but then you throw in a few zombies and post-apocalyptic fiction with how the dead/sick humans are acting. Overall, the entire story was charged with the adrenaline and thrills of a suspense/thriller novel, but the mood was terrifyingly eerie like a Horror story. There was almost too much sensory information for my primitive human brain to handle. Still, all of these genres combined made for one unique and fascinating story. This kind of book is of the same flavor as The Hunger Games with its originality, which I really appreciated.” - Katelyn Hensel for Readers' Favorite

“Sanctuary is a fast-paced Christian fantasy thriller that is original and quite entertaining. The story revolves around Jennie and her family, Pastor Billy and his wife, and two brothers who are polar opposites of each other. Each chapter is presented in the point of view of Jennie, Brad or Hugh (the brothers), which gives Pauline Creeden's Sanctuary, a multidimensional feel. The three different story-lines merge into a full-fledged fantasy/horror novel that never sags or lets up on the action. While there are Christian themes present in Sanctuary, and Jennie's faith is an important part of who she is, I, a non-Christian, did not feel I was being preached to or proselytized. I recommend Pauline Creeden's Sanctuary -- it's well-written and a lot of fun to read.” – Jack Magnus for Readers Favorite

Pauline is a horse trainer from Virginia, but writing is her therapy.

Armored Hearts, her joint effort with author Melissa Turner Lee, has been a #1 Bestseller in Christian Fantasy and been awarded the Crowned Heart for Excellence by InDtale Magazine. Her debut novel, Sanctuary has already been nominated for two awards in YA Science Fiction.

Guest Post by Ann Snizek: Character Building

Book Title: The Jewel of Nirel
Author:  Ann Snizek
Release Date:  July 27, 2013
Genre:  YA Fantasy, Sci-Fi
Length:  Over 86,000 Words
Presented by:  As You Wish Tours
Tour Schedule: The Jewel of Nirel

Character Building

One of the main points of fiction writing is building your characters.  You need your readers to connect with your people, human or not, in order for them to invest their time in reading the entire story.

I have several characters in my books that are as real to me as many flesh and blood people.  I know their likes, dislikes, quirks, mannerisms… every little bit possible.  This allows me to write in a realistic way.

Start out by writing up a profile for each character.  Put their physical description, but don’t stop there.  Add any quirks or particulars that make them who they are.  This isn’t for your readers to look at necessarily, but for you to use as a reference.  It allows you to track that you said they love apples on page 10 and not be allergic to them on page 110… unless of course something happens to change that fact about them.

You need to know about their personalities too.  This allows for consistency throughout your writing.  We each have characteristics in our personality that our family and friends can say,” that is exactly like you!”  We want to have that same connection with those we read about.  If we have someone in our book do something out of character, it should be known to the reader without always saying that it is out of character.

I like to pick one or two personality traits that stand out the most in each character.  I develop some level of backstory for the main people… enough to understand why they are the way they are.  This helps with their future interactions and reactions to events and co-characters.

The depth that you go into it all depends on you.  Naturally, the main people get the most detail, but where to stop is up to you.  I’ve heard that have a character write a journal helps.  While not all my characters are the journal keeping kind, I have used this for a few and I like how it worked out.  I even discovered a few things about them that I didn’t know.

I think the key is to never underestimate the importance of developing your characters.

BLURB

For the people of Tunuftol, and other countries on the planet Nyssa, names found them starting at twelve months old… at the earliest. Along with the names came certain skills or powers. Depending on what you did with your powers determined what type of person you were, and sometimes affected future names. Therefore, names had great importance in Tunuftol, and Krissa had more than a few… nine to be exact. Her full name was Krissa Lysandra Rue Alverna Harley Mya Magryta Freya Wittek, which is quite a mouthful.

The dangers haven't ended for our friends yet. The weather is starting to warm and the war started last fall is under way. Journey with Krissa and the crew as they struggle to keep their world safe and find their place in it.

Guest Post by Leah Petersen: Science in Science Fiction ... & Paranormal?

Science in Science Fiction…& Paranormal?
by Leah Petersen
This past weekend I attended Ad Astra convention in Toronto, ON. It’s a great con, and if you’re anywhere nearby, you should check it out next year. One of the panels I was on was called Science in Science Fiction. Now what does this have to do with Dorothy’s blog, when she’s a paranormal writer?
Bear with me.
One of the things that kept coming up was how important it is to respect your audience by making sure you do your homework. We were talking specifically about making sure our science wasn’t way out there, even when we’re fast forwarding hundreds of years into the future, or transplanting ourselves to other planets, or who knows what.
But if we’re writing about things that aren’t scientifically possible now, we can do whatever we want, right?
Nope. Why? Because your readers aren’t stupid. If you put people in outer space without ships or suits, you’d better have a really good explanation for how they haven’t died before the end of page one.
That goes for all sorts of genres.
Paranormal, for example, is that fun blend of science fiction and fantasy. The stuff that could almost be happening in our world but isn’t, and isn’t likely to just because we’ve made some new scientific discovery. So anything goes, right?
No, and here’s why: Your story, your world, your characters can be so much better if you take the time to be accurate. For example, if your character is a shapeshifter, someone’s going to notice and be frustrated by the fact that she’s 4’9” when she’s human and 12’ 1” when she’s a were-unicorn. You’re violating some pretty significant principles of physics and biology there, even accounting for the unicorn bit. So don’t pull a trick like that. Or, better yet, do it, just know HOW.
Skimming over the years of your life spent in high-school science classes, you know that we’re mostly empty space, because each individual atom we’re made of is mostly empty space, a little bit of nucleus and a lot of cloudy area made up of the protons and neutrons. With me? Great.
But there’s still only so much mass there. So if you stretch it out too much, you’re unlikely to get a very stable or solid were-unicorn. But what if something about your world makes the atoms of were-unicorns in their human form hold their protons and neutrons closer, what if there’s much less empty space than an average human. Well then you’ve got so much more to work with when it’s time to stretch that same collection of atoms into a being three times its size.
Why did I just bore you with the physics lesson? Because if you pay attention to the details, if you don’t make something happen just because you want it to, you’re not only going to have fewer pissed-off readers, you’ve got so many more possibilities! What would a human be like that is three times as dense as everyone around her? That’s Superman type stuff! Think of how it enriches your world, your characters, and opens up avenues that the average ‘well it’s a shapeshifter, it just works, ok?’ writer won’t find.
It’s more work. Let’s not kid ourselves. But if you want yours to be the book people love, that sticks with them and that they recommend to all their friends, you have to make sure they don’t throw it down in disgust, or just walk away at some point, shaking their heads at you.
Respect your reader. Do your homework. And keep writing!

Interview with Robynn Sheahan

Here's a post for all you sci-fi fans. Get comfy and read all about how Star Wars influenced a writer. We're chatting with author Robynn Sheahan about her current series.

Welcome to We Do Write, Robynn. Tell us a bit about yourself.

Thank you for inviting me here today, Dorothy, this is an honor!

Wow, about myself? Well, I think I’m basically average. I spent most of my growing up years in the country and in the woods, surrounded by horses, dogs, and other ranch type animals. I never owned a Barbie Doll, but I did enjoy playing Barbie’s with a girlfriend who had them all.

Me, I had plastic horses, dogs, and other ranch type animals I kept in brown paper bags and played with all the time.

I had a great imagination.

I went to college. Wanted to be a nurse. Ended up being a Paramedic/Firefighter. That was a great time in my life!

I went on to run my own ranch for about eighteen years. I had horses, dogs, and other ranch type animals.
Hmmm. I’m sensing a pattern here.

Now I write and I love it. And by the way, there are horses (caporas), dogs (maejen), and other various animals ( katjaramuud, asador, kenyon, and bonthar) in my stories.

How long have you been writing?

I’ve always enjoyed writing, playing around with different ideas, but the serious stuff began about seven years ago.

I guess you would call it Fan Fiction. Star Wars Fan Fiction. I wrote an entire book. One hundred and ten thousand words.

I took my fan fiction to a “So You Want to Get Published Class” and the first thing the instructor asked me was, “Why don’t you write your own story?”

My own story?! (Grumps out of the class a tad deflated.)

But wait . . . I don’t . . . What . . . I couldn’t . . . Could I?

I did.

Tell us about Storm of Arranon. What’s the story about?

Storm of Arranon is a series about Erynn Yager and Arranon. Arranon is a wild, dangerous, but beautiful world complete with a harsh environment and hostile life forms. Erynn learns she is linked to this unforgiving planet by magic and blood. The magic comes from the living spirit of Arranon herself.

Erynn’s blood tie to Arranon is from a father she never knew, a secret she keeps with her adoptive dad on her home world of Korin. Her very birth as a child of two worlds is forbidden. This mixed heritage has given her abilities she has struggled all her life to control, making her feel like an outcast. Erynn achieves a sense of belonging when she is accepted into Interceptor pilot training and believes her life is finally going in a direction where she will succeed.

This is the part where I start messing with Erynn’s life!

Not always in a bad way, though. Erynn does find love with Jaer, the really hot leader of the Anbas Warriors of Arranon.

Okay. It’s rocky at first, but they do get together, until something else goes wrong and Erynn is again pulled away to learn more about her abilities and fight the evil threatening Arranon.
Erynn never gives up hope for Arranon—or for love.

How did the story idea come to you?

Like I said earlier, I was writing fan fiction (Star Wars) and was crushed when I was advised the story would never go anywhere. (To write Star Wars branch stories, you must be invited to do so by the Star Wars Gods.)

Okay. Get over it.

What if I changed a few names, (to protect the innocent), came up with a new location, added a different spin to the central good vs evil plot, and basically let the characters take over and tell their own story?

Sheesh.

When I allowed my characters a voice, my story, Storm of Arranon, took off all on its own. In fact it went from three books to five. Five?

I understand the second book in the series is out. Can you tell us about that?

Yes, Storm of Arranon-Fire and Ice.

Erynn’s life once again starts to smooth into a sense of order and routine. That is until disturbing visions invade Erynn’s thoughts. She discovers another realm, different from the harsh surface, but equally beautiful and magical.

Dhoran’s realm.

Dhoran, the evil ruler of the underworld of Arranon, has come back to claim what he believes to be his. All of Arranon, above and below. He possesses a human host and begins a conquest not only of Arranon, but also of Erynn.

Erynn and Jaer’s love takes a slight detour, well, maybe not so slight. Jaer, it seems has a secret or two of his own.

Erynn is thrust into this underworld, meeting the inhabitants, connecting on a deeper level with the living Arranon, and learning that things aren’t always as they seem.

Do you have a critique group/partner or beta readers, or do you self edit?

I love my critique group! We used to meet at least once a week. Now they have become my beta readers. I would love to return to the weekly critique sessions. I believe I get more work done with a deadline for new material.

I also have and editor. She is so mean, but gets a great story out of me. I love her!
And I have a proofreader who is awesome!

Are you a plotter or a pantser?

Totally a panster!

What’s the hardest part of writing for you?

The first page. The first paragraph. That first line. They are so important!

So true! What do you absolutely have to have nearby when writing?

Coffee. Flavored coffee. Maybe tea. Occasionally a cupcake.

If you could have any super power, what would it be?

Thesauri eidetic.

I'll just pretend to know what that is and google it later. ;) What’s the weirdest thing you’ve googled?

Crystals, Rutilated Quartz to be precise.

Quick writing test! Use the following words in a sentence: stormy, misfits, and fluctuate.

Stormy days hide the misfits, the independent rays of sun that fight through the darkest clouds to fluctuate, light then dark across the distant hills.

Finish this sentence: If I’m not writing I’m probably . . .

Dancing. Woo Hoo!

Awesome! Here’s the part where you thank the people who are supporting you. Let’s hear your shout outs.

Bob and Ruth Harris who encourage me and tell me, nicely, when I’ve messed up.
Martha Straube who helps me dream big.
Russell Turney who keeps me laughing when the going gets tough.
Karen Parker, my editor.
Jackie Jones, my proofreader.
All those awesome readers who have given me reviews on the books. Yeah!

And finally, where can people find you and your books online?

Happy Release Day: Colonization by Aubrie Dionne PLUS Giveaway

Happy Book Birthday to COLONIZATION by Aubrie Dionne!

“Forbidden love on a paradise planet that’s anything but paradise...Dionne’s Colonization will keep you guessing.” – Cherie Reich, author of Defying Gravity

Finding a new home has never been so dangerous.

Andromeda has spent all seventeen years of her life aboard a deep space transport vessel destined for a paradise planet. Her safe cocoon is about to break open as Paradise 21 looms only one month away, and she must take the aptitude tests to determine her role on the new world and her computer
assigned lifemate. As a great-granddaughter of the Commander of the ship, she wants to live up to her family name. But, her forbidden love for her childhood friend, Sirius, distracts her and she fails the tests. The results place her in a menial role in the new colony and pair her with Corvus, “the oaf”.

But when Andromeda steps foot on Paradise 21, her predestined future is the least of her worries. Alien ghosts from a failed colonization warn her of a deadly threat to her colony. And when Sirius's ship crashes on the far ridge in an attempt to investigate, she journeys to rescue him with Corvus.

Andromeda now must convince the authorities of the imminent danger to protect her new home. What she didn't expect was a battle of her own feelings for Sirius and Corvus.

Can she save the colony and discover her true love?
