Interview with Justin Ordoñez

Today we're taking part in the Sykosa blog tour by interviewing author Justin Ordoñez. Let's dive right in and get to know him.

Welcome to We Do Write, Justin. Tell us a bit about yourself.

I’m thirty years old, live in Seattle, and I'm currently obsessed with getting people to read my book Sykosa. When I’m not doing that, I’m preparing myself for a total hip replacement surgery I’ll be doing at the end of July, which should allow me to play golf and tennis again, so I’m rather excited about it. I’ve also been watching a television show called Friday Night Lights and I’ve been thinking about it constantly.

How long have you been writing?

I’ve been seriously writing since I was 14. What I mean by “serious,” is that it’s a daily writing habit that I perform under the instruction of no one else. I wasn’t turning it in for school, I wasn’t getting it published in a school paper, I didn’t have an audience of any kind. I was just writing for the sake of writing, just cause I wanted to do it.

Tell us about SYKOSA. What' the story about?

Sykosa (that’s “sy”-as-in-“my” ko-sa) is the story of a sixteen year old girl who’s trying to reclaim her identity an act of violence shatters her life and the life of her friends. This process is complicated by her best friend, Niko, a hyper-ambitious, type-A personality who has started to war with other girls for social supremacy of their school, a prestigious preparatory academy in the Pacific Northwest of the United States. To compensate, Sykosa has decided to fall in love with her new boyfriend, Tom, who was involved in the act of violence. Propelled by survivor guilt, an anxiety disorder, and her hunger for Tom and his charms, Sykosa attends a weekend-long, unchaperoned party at Niko's posh vacation cottage, where she will finally confront Niko on their friendship, her indecision about her friends and their involvement in the act of violence, and she will make the biggest decision of her life—whether or not she wants to lose her virginity to Tom.

How did the idea of the story come to you?

It developed itself over many years. At first, I just wanted to write better female characters (I’m a dude). Once you get a bit better at that, you decide you want to write better plots. Then, you decide you want to write better plots that fit better with your better female characters. Over time, it all sort of finds its way into one vision. It wasn’t anything deliberate.

Are you a planner or a pantser?

I’m a pantser. I always have a general idea of where I want to go, but I have a lack of regard for my writing that might make some writers ill. I delete hundreds of pages on a whim, throw way stuff that’s 99% done, change things at the beginning when I’m just finishing the ending—it’s kind of a madhouse. Right up until I finish a story, it appears to be a disaster, and it’s often met by people smiling warmly at me like, “Yeah, Justin, it’s great…” I trust myself, though. So I know that moment will come when it all seals itself up, but it takes time, and you have to be willing to work through the shortcomings.

What’s the hardest part of writing for you?

The hardest part is being patient. Waiting for something to be done, waiting for someone to read it, waiting to find out if anyone cares about it, waiting for reviews to come in… The game is waiting. It’s enough to make someone lock themselves in a room and forget life is even happening on the outside.

What do you absolutely have to have nearby when writing?

I’m going to say my laptop because I write directly onto the computer. Anything else, including my cell phone, can prove to be a major distraction, so I try to limit being around those things.

If you could have any super power, what would it be?

I’d like to have a healing ability similar to Wolverine’s of the X-men. Something so that I can be rid of the aches and pains, yet I don’t get a superiority complex that isolates me from humanity.

What's the weirdest thing you've googled?

It actually happened just last night. My friend mentioned a rumor about the rapper Lil’ Kim and he wanted to know if it was real, so I Googled it on my phone. Unfortunately, the rumor is too grotesque for me to mention it here.

Quick writing test! Use the following words in a sentence: surgery, ballet shoes, and disintegrate.

The pillar blocked the wearer of the ballet shoes, but it did not block what exceeded sight—a precision as cutting as surgery, and a disintegrating doubt with her each practiced move.

Here’s the part where you thank the people who are supporting you. Let's hear your shout outs.

I doubt I could thank all the people who truly helped me and I’d feel bad if I forgot someone. Suffice it to say, I owe a lot to my family, my friends, and lots of people I don’t even know any longer who decided to read my work over the years.

And finally, where can people find you and your book online?

Pitch Contest Reminder

You didn't forget, did you? I hope not, because the Three-Two-One Pitch contest is afoot. It all takes place August 20th (my birthday) and 21st. To remind you all what the contest entails, it goes something like this:

THREE - Pitch your story in only three sentences.

TWO - Two days to enter: August  20th and 21st.

ONE - One agent will judge and pick a winner.

Doesn't that sound great? Well then get those pitches ready!

Do not enter your pitch on this post. I will make an official contest entry post on August 20th, and entrants will post their three-sentence pitches (no run-on sentences!) in the comments section of that post. At midnight on August 21st, I will turn off comments and no other entries will be accepted. Do your best, because the winner will get a full manuscript request from our judging agent!

I will announce our spectacular judging agent sometime this week, so keep an eye out!

This contest is open to unagented, completed and polished manuscripts in the genres of:
  • MG

Interview with JC Martin

And We Do Write is back! Hope you all had a nice summer and are enjoying the last of it. Today we're chatting with author JC Martin about her book, THE ORACLE.

Welcome, JC! Tell us a bit about yourself.
I write crime and thrillers with what I like to think is a psychological slant. I like to delve deep into my character’s psyche, find out what scares them, what angers them, and in the case of my villains, what makes them kill. When not writing, I work as a martial arts instructor, so expect to find quite a bit of combat action in my stories, too!

How long have you been writing?
I’ve been writing seriously (with an aim to getting published) for around 3 years now. Prior to that, I’ve dabbled for years writing short stories and fanfiction. I wrote my first novel (now trashed) at 14. My first “publication” was when I was around 10, when I turned an old notebook into a comic book, with my then pet dogs as cartoon characters.

Tell us about ORACLE. What's the story about?
Oracle is a crime thriller set in London in the run-up to the Olympics. Whilst the city gears up to host the Games, a serial killer stalks the streets, committing bizarre murders. Detective Kurt Lancer is put on the case, but he is in a race against time, as evidence points towards the killer planning a grand finale—at the Opening Ceremony of the Olympic Games.

How did the idea of the story come to you?
Amid the furore lading up to London 2012, the cynical local papers were publishing all sorts of stories about organising woes: blown budgets, logistical nightmares, shoddy construction, projected transport chaos ... which got me to thinking: won’t it really stress the organisers out if they had to contend with the public relations nightmare of a serial killer as well? That got me into researching the Olympics, both the 2012 edition and the history of the Games, and that’s how the idea for this story came about.

Are you a planner or a pantser?
Hard-core planner. I don’t start writing until I’ve first completed a chapter-by-chapter outline of the whole story.

What’s the hardest part of writing for you?
Getting started! Honestly, with everything going on, the hardest part is to glue my butt onto the chair and to just get on with it.

What do you absolutely have to have nearby when writing?
A cold drink to sip: either iced water, diet Coke or juice. Some snacks would be nice, too.

If you could have any super power, what would it be?
The ability to write as quickly, prolifically and masterfully as Stephen King. Failing which, the ability to bend time to my will, so I can squeeze more hours into a day.

Ooh, yeah, I'd like that too! What's the weirdest thing you've Googled?
For Oracle, I had to research the appearance of a corpse exposed to electricity in water. Grim, I know. My latest search history: burn victims, homemade bombs, suicide bombing, etc. might just get me blacklisted by Homeland Security!

Here’s the part where you thank the people who are supporting you. Let's hear your shout outs.
Oh my, there are so many! I appreciate all the support and encouragement from family, friends, and online blog-buddies and followers, but there area few I just have to embarrass by naming them: Lisa L. Regan, my critique partner, whose feedback of Oracle was invaluable during the book’s foetal stages;Cherie Reich, who has been a loyal follower from day one; and Len Lambert, one of my most vocal and ardent supporters. You know you guys all ROCK, right?

And finally, where can people find you and your books online?
You can find me on my website jc-martin.com and I blog at Fighter Writer. I also Tweet andFacebook. Oracle is available at:

Amazon.com
Amazon.co.uk
Barnes and Noble

Thank you so much for chatting with us, JC! I love the cover for Oracle and wish you lots of success with the book!

Giveaway and Cover Reveal: Colonization by Aubrie Dionne

Finding a new home has never been so dangerous.

Andromeda has spent all seventeen years of her life aboard a deep space transport vessel destined for a paradise planet. Her safe cocoon is about to break open as Paradise 21 looms only one month away, and she must take the aptitude tests to determine her role on the new world and her computer assigned lifemate. As a great-granddaughter of the Commander of the ship, she wants to live up to her family name. But, her forbidden love for her childhood friend, Sirius, distracts her and she fails the tests. The results place her in a menial role in the new colony and pair her with Corvus, “the oaf”.

But when Andromeda steps foot on Paradise 21, her predestined future is the least of her worries. Alien ghosts from a failed colonization warn her of a deadly threat to her colony. And when Sirius's ship crashes on the far ridge in an attempt to investigate, she journeys to rescue him with Corvus.

Andromeda now must convince the authorities of the imminent danger to protect her new home. What she didn't expect was a battle of her own feelings for Sirius and Corvus.

Can she save the colony and discover her true love?

New Release: In Need of Therapy by Tracie Banister

In Need of Therapy by Tracie Banister

Lending a sympathetic ear and dispensing sage words of advice is all part of the job for psychologist Pilar Alvarez, and she’s everything a good therapist should be:  warm, compassionate, supportive.  She listens, she cares, and she has all the answers, but how’s the woman everyone turns to in their hour of need supposed to cope when her own life starts to fall apart?

While working hard to make a success of her recently-opened practice in trendy South Beach, Pilar must also find time to cater to the demands of her boisterous Cuban family, which includes younger sister Izzy, an unemployed, navel-pierced wild child who can't stay out of trouble, and their mother, a beauty queen turned drama queen who’s equally obsessed with her fading looks and getting Pilar married before it’s “too late.”  Although she’d like to oblige her mother and make a permanent love connection, Pilar’s romantic prospects look grim.  Her cheating ex, who swears that he’s reformed, is stalking her.  A hunky, but strictly off-limits, patient with bad-boy appeal and intimacy issues is making passes.  And the sexy shrink in the suite across the hall has a gold band on his left ring finger.

When a series of personal and professional disasters lead Pilar into the arms of one of her unsuitable suitors, she's left shaken, confused, and full of self-doubt.  With time running out, she must make sense of her feelings and learn to trust herself again so that she can save her business, her family, and most importantly, her heart.

In Need of Therapy is available now at Amazon, Amazon UK, and will be up shortly at Barnes and Noble.
