Today we're chatting with author Melissa Jo Peltier about her novel, REALITY BOULEVARD.
Welcome to We Do Write, Melissa. Tell us a bit about yourself.
I was born in Boston, Massachusetts in the early 60’s. The first time I saw my Dad cry was the day Bobby Kennedy was shot. I attended the excellent public schools of the Wellesley, Massachusetts school system, where I got an education comparable and sometimes superior to many of my college friends who attended posh private schools. I then traveled from Massachusetts to California to attend Pomona College in Claremont, California. I entered as a theater major; changed to Theater/English double major; then changed again to a double major in English, in English literature and creative writing. I had enough credits for a Theatre “minor”, if they’d had them.
I spent a semester at the University of London, Birkbeck College, through the Institute for European Studies. I attended on a $6000 grant from the Carnation Foundation. I spent a lot of time in Charles Dicken’s house.
When and how did you discover you wanted to be a writer?
I just always was a writer, from the start. My mother told me I used to play aloud in dialogue from soon after I could talk. She’d overhear me, say, playing with my bear and my dinosaur.
Bear: “’I’m tired’,” he said.
Dinosaur: She sighed. “No, don’t go to bed yet.”
Then they walked over to the garden…
I decided to write fiction in my own voice after writing 7 major non-fiction titles as co-author or “credited ghost.” Writing in another person’s voice made me so frustrated, I had to let my own voice free, finally. I hadn’t really let it free since college.
Tell us about REALITY BOULEVARD. What's the story about?
Reality Boulevard is contemporary fiction, Hollywood novel, satire, wanna-be literary novel
When Oscar winning producer Marty Maltzman's award-winning non-fiction series "Lights and Sirens," is suddenly cancelled after 16 seasons, the quirky documentary filmmaker and his colorful staff find themselves unemployed and out on the streets in an artificial new Hollywood filled with Kardashians, Survivors and Real Housewives. As the collection of oddball characters adapt to a surreal world in which the lines between truth and lies are blurred both on and off the screen, this darkly funny novel reveals an insider’s view of Hollywood and Reality TV.
What is your most memorable moment in your writing career.
Winning the News and Documentary Emmy for writing TITANIC: DEATH OF A DREAM in 1995, a documentary I also produced and directed for A&E. I thought we were such a long shot that I used up all the film in my camera before the award was even called. My late Dad was my “date” as well, which made it extra special.
What problems have you encountered in your career and how did you deal with them?
I think the early rejections for Reality Boulevard stumped me a bit. Most of the publishers who rejected me had only good things to say about the book and rather vague, subjective reasons for rejection (including not knowing how to market). So there was no clear path to rewriting to make it attractive to editors. Since this is my first novel, I was (and still am) very insecure about gauging its real merit – is it good? Is it not? I know as a reader I enjoy it, but without an audience, it’s hard to tell if the rejections were a sign to quit writing, or just a bump along the way. Fortunately, Apostrophe Books loved Reality Boulevard, and they absolutely “got it” the way I intended. Since then, my Amazon reader reviews http://www.amazon.com/Reality-Boulevard-ebook/dp/B00BBF23BW show that there are a lot of others out there who are entertained by it. But the extreme lack of confidence in my own ability – with no real clear path to improving it - was really unsettling for a time.
Did an established writer mentor you in your early days? If yes, how did the mentor help you?
My mentor/angel was National Book Award-winning poet and essayist, Adrienne Rich.
When I was in college, my senior year, I wrote a poem in a creative writing class. I can’t recall its title right now, but it was about conformity in suburbia and how little girls dream of growing up to look like Barbie. (My work had a lot of feminist subtext back then.) When it came time to discuss in class, the writing professor tore the poem apart. Not the style or craft, but the subject matter. He actually laughed at it, saying “Who cares?” Later I heard from a freshman who had this particular professor as an advisor. She told me he often used my poems as examples of what not to write about. Naturally I was devastated, but I had an angel on my side.
That same semester, Adrienne Rich – then my hero as a writer; I’d read all her books – came to the consortium of colleges that included mine and offered a select writing workshop open to only ten students in all the colleges. I was chosen as one of the ten. After my other professor’s ridicule, I remember running all the way to across three campuses to have a meeting with Ms. Rich. She was outraged at the behaviour of the other professor and told me I had real talent, a real voice, and I must never, ever let anyone tell me what I should or shouldn’t be writing. She was a powerful woman and she passionately convinced me to keep writing. We stayed in touch for several years after the class and I feel so blessed and honoured to have known and studied under her. Not to mention having her save my writing from certain death.
What genre do you most often write?
Reality Boulevard is a sort of genre hybrid – a contemporary Hollywood novel that reads like satire. Right now, I’m trying the thriller genre, as thrillers are among the books I love to read and movies I love to see. I haven’t written enough longform fiction to know if I’m going to be drawn to one genre or another yet…I always saw myself as a literary novelist but I’m not sure I’m talented enough to warrant that title.
What other genres have you written?
I guess non-fiction first person “credited ghost” would be my previous specialty, but I’m focusing on my own fiction now
Who are the authors who most influenced your writing and your career?
There are so many, it’s impossible to list in a questionnaire. Charles Dickens, to me, is one of history’s greatest writers. Talk about someone who was born to be a writer – his inexhaustible productiveness had him writing as many as three long serials at one time. Dickens appeals to me because of the humanity in his work, and because somehow, he manages to infuse all his characters – even the worst of them – with a creator’s love and forgiveness. He also was the first great writer to combine the social novel with entertainment – something I aspire to.
Who are the authors your read most often?
Right now I’m reading a lot of thrillers to familiarize myself with the best of the genre, and I really like Kate Atkinson, Tana French, Lisa Gardner Gillian Flynn, Richard Price and Jo Nesbo. I know the Stieg Larssen books get a lot of flack for his “populist” writing style, but the characters he created were incredible. I loved Hilary Mantel’s Wolf Hall and Bring Up the Bodies and I think Jennifer Egan is one of the most interesting writers out there today.
What advice would you give to all up-and-coming writers?
Just write the next word. And tell the truth.

Interview with Robynn Sheahan
Here's a post for all you sci-fi fans. Get comfy and read all about how Star Wars influenced a writer. We're chatting with author Robynn Sheahan about her current series.
Welcome to We Do Write, Robynn. Tell us a bit about yourself.
Thank you for inviting me here today, Dorothy, this is an honor!
Wow, about myself? Well, I think I’m basically average. I spent most of my growing up years in the country and in the woods, surrounded by horses, dogs, and other ranch type animals. I never owned a Barbie Doll, but I did enjoy playing Barbie’s with a girlfriend who had them all.
Me, I had plastic horses, dogs, and other ranch type animals I kept in brown paper bags and played with all the time.
I had a great imagination.
I went to college. Wanted to be a nurse. Ended up being a Paramedic/Firefighter. That was a great time in my life!
I went on to run my own ranch for about eighteen years. I had horses, dogs, and other ranch type animals.
Hmmm. I’m sensing a pattern here.
Now I write and I love it. And by the way, there are horses (caporas), dogs (maejen), and other various animals ( katjaramuud, asador, kenyon, and bonthar) in my stories.
How long have you been writing?
I’ve always enjoyed writing, playing around with different ideas, but the serious stuff began about seven years ago.
I guess you would call it Fan Fiction. Star Wars Fan Fiction. I wrote an entire book. One hundred and ten thousand words.
I took my fan fiction to a “So You Want to Get Published Class” and the first thing the instructor asked me was, “Why don’t you write your own story?”
My own story?! (Grumps out of the class a tad deflated.)
But wait . . . I don’t . . . What . . . I couldn’t . . . Could I?
I did.
Tell us about Storm of Arranon. What’s the story about?
Storm of Arranon is a series about Erynn Yager and Arranon. Arranon is a wild, dangerous, but beautiful world complete with a harsh environment and hostile life forms. Erynn learns she is linked to this unforgiving planet by magic and blood. The magic comes from the living spirit of Arranon herself.
Erynn’s blood tie to Arranon is from a father she never knew, a secret she keeps with her adoptive dad on her home world of Korin. Her very birth as a child of two worlds is forbidden. This mixed heritage has given her abilities she has struggled all her life to control, making her feel like an outcast. Erynn achieves a sense of belonging when she is accepted into Interceptor pilot training and believes her life is finally going in a direction where she will succeed.
This is the part where I start messing with Erynn’s life!
Not always in a bad way, though. Erynn does find love with Jaer, the really hot leader of the Anbas Warriors of Arranon.
Okay. It’s rocky at first, but they do get together, until something else goes wrong and Erynn is again pulled away to learn more about her abilities and fight the evil threatening Arranon.
Erynn never gives up hope for Arranon—or for love.
How did the story idea come to you?
Like I said earlier, I was writing fan fiction (Star Wars) and was crushed when I was advised the story would never go anywhere. (To write Star Wars branch stories, you must be invited to do so by the Star Wars Gods.)
Okay. Get over it.
What if I changed a few names, (to protect the innocent), came up with a new location, added a different spin to the central good vs evil plot, and basically let the characters take over and tell their own story?
Sheesh.
When I allowed my characters a voice, my story, Storm of Arranon, took off all on its own. In fact it went from three books to five. Five?
I understand the second book in the series is out. Can you tell us about that?
Yes, Storm of Arranon-Fire and Ice.
Erynn’s life once again starts to smooth into a sense of order and routine. That is until disturbing visions invade Erynn’s thoughts. She discovers another realm, different from the harsh surface, but equally beautiful and magical.
Dhoran’s realm.
Dhoran, the evil ruler of the underworld of Arranon, has come back to claim what he believes to be his. All of Arranon, above and below. He possesses a human host and begins a conquest not only of Arranon, but also of Erynn.
Erynn and Jaer’s love takes a slight detour, well, maybe not so slight. Jaer, it seems has a secret or two of his own.
Erynn is thrust into this underworld, meeting the inhabitants, connecting on a deeper level with the living Arranon, and learning that things aren’t always as they seem.
Do you have a critique group/partner or beta readers, or do you self edit?
I love my critique group! We used to meet at least once a week. Now they have become my beta readers. I would love to return to the weekly critique sessions. I believe I get more work done with a deadline for new material.
I also have and editor. She is so mean, but gets a great story out of me. I love her!
And I have a proofreader who is awesome!
Are you a plotter or a pantser?
Totally a panster!
What’s the hardest part of writing for you?
The first page. The first paragraph. That first line. They are so important!
So true! What do you absolutely have to have nearby when writing?
Coffee. Flavored coffee. Maybe tea. Occasionally a cupcake.
If you could have any super power, what would it be?
Thesauri eidetic.
I'll just pretend to know what that is and google it later. ;) What’s the weirdest thing you’ve googled?
Crystals, Rutilated Quartz to be precise.
Quick writing test! Use the following words in a sentence: stormy, misfits, and fluctuate.
Stormy days hide the misfits, the independent rays of sun that fight through the darkest clouds to fluctuate, light then dark across the distant hills.
Finish this sentence: If I’m not writing I’m probably . . .
Dancing. Woo Hoo!
Awesome! Here’s the part where you thank the people who are supporting you. Let’s hear your shout outs.
Bob and Ruth Harris who encourage me and tell me, nicely, when I’ve messed up.
Martha Straube who helps me dream big.
Russell Turney who keeps me laughing when the going gets tough.
Karen Parker, my editor.
Jackie Jones, my proofreader.
All those awesome readers who have given me reviews on the books. Yeah!
And finally, where can people find you and your books online?

Bobby Baines is in high school, which is bad enough. When his hero, Scarlet Knight, dies, Bobby is forced to take up his mantel. After all, Bobby Baines is no super hero, he’s a Sidekick!

Interview with Tricia Drammeh + GIVEAWAY!!
Today we are excited to interview Tricia Drummeh on the first day of her Blog Tour. And don't miss the giveaway for her novel, The Claiming Words, at the end of this post!
Tricia Drammeh is a wife and a mother of four
children. Although she currently lives in Missouri, she has called many places
home, including Georgia, Ohio, and California. She’s worked in retail, customer
service, sales, and accounting, but writing has always been her dream career.
When she isn’t writing, she enjoys reading, drinking vast amounts of coffee,
and spending time with her family and the multitude of animals who have taken
over her home. Tricia is currently working on her sixth novel.Welcome to We Do Write, Tricia. Tell us about The Claiming Words. What's the story about?
The Claiming Words is the story of Rachel and Alisa, two girls
who grew up in the same small town, but were never friends. When Jace moves to
town, they’re both drawn to him. Rachel senses there is something different
about him, but Alisa is the first to discover his secret. Both girls are pulled
into a world of magic and danger, but only one can win Jace’s love.
Exciting! I love a good love triangle with a hot guy at the top! How did the idea of the story come to you?
The story started with an imagined conversation between two
brothers fighting over the same girl. That scene never made it into the first
book, but it’s what got me started.
Well, that's all that counts, right? It set you on the path. Do you have a critique group/partner or beta readers, or do you
self-edit?
Initially, I had the book posted on Authonomy by Harper Collins.
I got some very helpful feedback from members, particularly a few very special
authors. Once the book was accepted for publication, my editor tweaked it a
little more.
Now, this is important: Are you a plotter or a pantser?
Oh, I’m a total pantser. I never plot anything. It spoils the
fun if I know how the book is going to end.
Yes! *high five* I'm with you, sister! What’s the hardest part of writing for you?
Right now, the hardest part of writing is finding the time. I’ve
been working on edits for one book, while trying to find time to keep up with
my blog. And, I have three kids still living at home, so there’s always
something going on.
The lack of time is a pain, isn't it? I vote we take a petition to have the day extended by 3 hours. Not too much; I don't want to be greedy. Just enough to leave time for pesky kids and blog posts.
What do you absolutely have to have nearby when writing?
Coffee. I can write anywhere, any time. But, coffee is a must.
If you could have any super power, what would it be?
I would like to be able to fly. It’s something I’ve dreamed
about since I was a child.
What's the weirdest thing you've googled?
Boy, that’s a tough one! I’ve googled some of the weirdest
things… Kenyan cuisine, how to perform a séance, the walking distance from
Senegal to Mauritania, and so many other random things.
Quick writing test! Use the following words in a sentence: calmed,
demonstration, and stationary.
The King longed to flee the battlefield, but remained stationary
and continued his speech, and this demonstration of his confidence calmed the
anxious warriors.
Oh! I hope the battle turns out okay. Finish this sentence: If I'm not writing, I'm probably ...
Reading. I read way too much.
Reading too much? Nonsense. There is no such thing as reading too much.
So, who are the people supporting you? Who would you like to thank?
I have to thank my husband, because without his support, the
kids would have gone unfed. My husband was a trooper, doing laundry and cooking
dinner during those dark days when I was hunched over my computer muttering at
my imaginary friends. I have to thank my kids too for putting up with me. And,
my beta readers: Lisa, Tockica, Jacoba, and many others who helped whip the
book into shape.
And finally, where can people find you and your book online?
I’m on Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and Books a Million. The book
is available in both ebook and paperback. And, you can always stop by my

Book Birthday and Interview with Carrie Butler
Today, we have Carrie Butler here to talk about her New Adult Paranormal Romance, STRENGTH, which releases today!
Happy
release day, Carrie!
Thank you, Elizabeth and Dorothy! I'm so happy to
be here. :)
We're happy to have you. Tell us a little about yourself.
Right now, I'm focusing on my
writing career and doing freelance graphic design on the side. It's a little
scary, but the job market has been less-than-stellar for daydreaming marketers
in Appalachia. Go figure. *Grins* At least I'm doing what I love!
You're right about that! It makes things much easier when you're doing something you love!
How
long have you been writing?
STRENGTH is my debut novel, but I've
been writing "seriously" for a few years now. Before that, my stories
went on and on, defying all word count ranges... *shudder*
Ha! I think the ability to "kill your darlings" is one of the last things to develop, as a writer. But, it's such an important step.
Category: New Adult
Genre: Paranormal Romance
Publisher: Sapphire Star Publishing
When college student Rena Collins finds herself
nose-to-chest with the campus outcast, she’s stunned. Wallace Blake is
everything she’s ever wanted in a man—except he can’t touch her. His
uncontrollable strength, a so-called gift from his bloodline, makes every
interaction dangerous. And with a secret, supernatural war brewing among his
kind, there’s no time to work it out. To keep Wallace in her life, Rena will
have to risk a whole lot more than her heart.
Interesting premise, and Wallace Blake sounds absolutely swoon-worthy! How
did you come up with the idea for this story?
For years, I'd been toying with the idea of a unique,
supernatural race. (Okay, three races.)
One night, for whatever reason, I couldn't stop thinking about the concept of
balance. I started jotting down notes while listening to music, and "All
I Know" (the 2005
Five for Fighting cover) came on.
The lyrics sparked something, and the next thing I knew, the romance element
had fallen into place.
*Sigh* I love that song...
Okay, now you have to scoop me up off the floor. I love that song, too. And I can see how it was an inspiration.
STRENGTH is considered New Adult. The genre has been getting a lot of press lately. What
are your thoughts on the New Adult genre in today's market?
In September, Publishers Weekly
reported that over half of young
adult sales were coming from adults. Even more surprising, 78% of those adults
were buying for themselves! Since new adult (NA) is a category that bridges the
gap between YA and adult fiction, it's starting to tap into that lucrative
market.
Dozens of publishers—from small
presses to the Big 6—have opened their doors to new adult submissions. Some have
even launched lines dedicated to the category. I think we're witnessing a
period of tremendous growth for NA.
I think you're right! It's an exciting time for NA and NA writers.
Tell us a bit about your writing process. Do
you have a critique group/partner or beta readers, or do you self-edit?
I had seven critique partners and four beta readers for
STRENGTH. Whew! It was a lot of feedback to take on, but it really helped me
grow as a writer.
Are
you a plotter or a pantser?
These days, I'm more of a plotter. I
started with Post-It notes and copier paper, moved on to Excel spreadsheets,
and then finally found my stride in Scrivener. Now I can't start a book without
it!
I hear Scrivener rocks, but I'm still stuck in my pantser ways. Call me stubborn. What’s
the hardest part of writing for you?
Waiting to get to the "good
parts". I never write scenes in order.
What
do you absolutely have to have nearby when writing?
H2O. Gotta keep the ol' brain going.
If
you could have any super power, what would it be?
"I belieeeeve I can fly!"
Seriously, I can't imagine how liberating that must feel.
(Plus, I'm terrified of airplanes.)
Flying would be pretty cool! What's
the weirdest thing you've googled?
Oh my goodness. I’m probably on so
many “watch lists” I remember Googling how to remove bloodstains from
sidewalks. That was awkward...
Hehehe! Well, there are LOTS of reasons why you might google that, right? ... Right?
Quick
writing test! Use the following words in a sentence: anniversary, jumping
jacks, and hallucinating.
“Was I hallucinating, or were my parents
doing jumping jacks on their anniversary?”
(Because we all know that’s what
parents do behind closed doors on their anniversary—jumping jacks.)
I know that's what I'd do on my anniversary, if I were married.
Finish
this sentence: If I'm not writing, I'm probably...
...thinking about writing. Sad,
isn't it? ;)
It doesn't matter what I'm doing—sketching,
designing a book cover, doing target practice, etc. My characters refuse to
shut up! Thankfully, that seems to be a good thing in this industry.
Yes, it's a very good thing. Who would you like to thank for supporting you and your writing. Let's hear your
shout outs.
Oh, what a cool idea! So many people
have helped me get to this point, and I would have never made it without them.
Let's see...
*Takes a deep breath* Shout-outs to:
God, my folks, my sister, my brother-in-law, my nephew, my niece, other family,
friends, my publishers (Amy & Katie), my editors, my SSP family, my critique
partners, my beta readers, the blogging community, the Twitterverse, my Facebook
fans, #NALitChat regulars, book reviewers, and the ever-popular Dorothy Dreyer and Elizabeth Holloway!
And
finally, where can people find you and your books online?
In March, they'll be able to find
STRENGTH on Amazon, Kindle, Barnes & Noble, Nook, iBooks, Sony Reader
Store, Kobo, Diesel, and Baker & Taylor.
