Be sure to enter the giveaway found at the end of the post!

It’s finally here, and you finally get to see it!!  Sharing the cover of my debut novel, Emerge, with you means so much to me.  When I saw it for the first time, my jaw dropped—it’s just that beautiful.  I love how the main character, Lia, blends so seamlessly into the ocean, like she’s one with the water, which is so thematically perfect for the book.  While everything seems calm and beautiful on the surface, there’s something deeper, more alluring, and perhaps more sinister hidden just below.
The call of the ocean is an important part of the novel, so it’s mesmerizing the way Lia is being drawn toward the sea—and taking the reader with her.
Want to know my favorite detail?  It’s the way the bottom of Lia’s gown billows like ocean waves (I’m a sucker for a gorgeous gown!).  And the sparkles behind the title hint at the magic within. I could gush all day, but I really want to know what you think!  Come tell me on TwitterGoodreadsIG, or Facebook!  I’m SO excited for you to read the first book of the Mer Chronicles this April!

xo Tobie

Lia Nautilus may be a Mermaid but she’s never lived in the ocean. War has ravaged the seven seas ever since the infamous Little Mermaid unleashed a curse that stripped Mer of their immortality. Lia has grown up in a secret community of land-dwelling Mer hidden among Malibu’s seaside mansions. Her biggest problems are surviving P.E. and keeping her feelings for Clay Ericson in check. Sure, he’s gorgeous in that cocky, leather jacket sort of way and makes her feel like there’s a school of fish swimming in her stomach, but getting involved with a human could put Lia's entire community at risk.
So it’s for the best that he’s dating that new girl, right? That is, until Lia finds out she isn't the only one at school keeping a potentially deadly secret. And this new girl? Her eyes are dead set on Clay, who doesn't realize the danger he's in. If Lia hopes to save him, she’ll have to get closer to Clay. Lia’s parents would totally flip if they found out she was falling for a human boy, but the more time she spends with him, the harder it is for her to deny her feelings. After making a horrible mistake, Lia will risk everything to stop Clay from falling in love with the wrong girl.

Excerpt
Somewhere on the Pacific Ocean
The young man aimed his crossbow at the water, ready to fire a bolt of solid iron at the first glimpse of flesh beneath the surface.
“Sir,” he said, “shouldn’t we have seen one by now?”
The captain turned his back to the salty wind, jaw tight. “They know we’re here.”
“So what are they doing?”
He followed the captain’s gaze. Blackness merged with the empty grey horizon in every direction. A long silence passed, filled only by gentle swells lapping against the ship.
The captain drew his own crossbow.
“Forming a plan.”
All twenty men aboard the ship readied their weapons, reacting in a chain until the last man at the stern took steady aim at the waves.
“Make ready your iron, men,” shouted the captain. “We have ripples approaching off the port side.”
A handful of places in the water puckered, as if something lingered just below the surface. The sea was too black to tell.
Then it happened. Fifty, maybe sixty sea demons burst from the water and slammed against the ship. The men wasted no time. They reacted with trained speed and agility as the demons thrust stones and jagged shells into the wood, both to break holes in the ship and to scale the sides. The men picked them off with bolts of iron and watched them fall one by one back into the sea.
But they were outnumbered. Soon the demons were upon the ship, pulling themselves across the deck with bony arms.
The young man had already shot a dozen and the water reddened with each passing second.
Slow scraping sounds threatened him from behind. He whirled around, crossbow ready. Burning eyes met his, and sharp teeth, bared to rip into his flesh. He gripped the trigger, felt the bow tighten—
And the demon was gone. The young man stared into the wide gaze of a girl his own age. With a startled cry, he jerked his aim so the bolt barely missed her.
She held a black shell in her hand, sharp at the edges and ready to use as a club. But she didn’t raise it. She just looked at him.
He lowered his crossbow.
Her blonde hair fell heavily over her shoulders, dripping beads of water down her naked chest and stomach, pooling where her torso joined her tail.
He blinked, but made no other motion—where her torso joined her tail. Scales faded into flesh like some sort of beautiful, green and tan sunset.
She pulled herself closer.
“Stay back,” said the young man, unsure what prompted him to hesitate.
He looked into her eyes—emeralds surrounded by pearl white—where moments ago they had burned red. Her sharp teeth had retracted behind rosy lips. The seaweed-coloured flesh of her upper body was now olive and raised with goose bumps from the icy wind.
Hanu aii,” she whispered. Do not fear. She spoke his language.
He loosened his grip on the crossbow, studying her. She lifted a frail arm and pushed the hair from her eyes, then motioned him forwards.
His pulse quickened as he stared at the beautiful girl.
Hanu aii,” she said again, her voice resonating sweetly, as if she sang without singing.
Suddenly, he was kneeling in front of her, level with her luminous eyes. The sounds around him faded but for the soft purr in the base of her throat.
She reached up and held an icy hand to his cheek, not for a moment breaking eye contact. The hand slid behind his head and pulled his face towards hers, slowly but firmly. He inhaled her sweet breath.
“No!”
He flinched. He turned to see the captain racing towards them, aiming his crossbow at the maiden.
The young man grasped the scene around him. The ship was empty. A few stray weapons and barrels bobbed serenely in the water. Blood soaked the deck in places, and even the main mast had a splatter across the bottom.
The captain fired wide. Before he could reload and aim again, the sea demon put a hand on the young man’s chin and pulled his gaze back to hers.
Her eyes blazed red. Her skin rippled into the rotten colour of seaweed. Her ears grew pointed and long like sprouting coral. She opened her mouth to reveal a row of deadly teeth.
The young man screamed.
The demon pulled him against her with more strength than three men combined, and they dove headfirst off the side of the ship.
They disappeared into the blood-red water.

Review: Coral & Bone by Tiffany Duane

Discover the truth- redefine self- save the realms- count me in. Coral & Bone by Tiffany Daune was a compelling read. It kept me awake, even when I couldn't afford to stay up. I'd tell myself "just one more chapter," over and over again, then find myself thinking about the characters long after I'd set it down. This was never going to be a one sitting book for me because every few chapters the need to get back in the water would be too strong, and I'd simply have to go swimming. I suppose other than *spoilers* it would almost make an ideal bathtub book.  Naturally, reading about mermaids and sirens, and the watery realm of Elosia made me want to immerse myself- my family jokes that I'm a bit of a mermaid myself. It might have something to do with the fact that I sometimes swim in a mermaid tail- dead serious. Of course, in Coral & Bone, being a mermaid is not even remotely a positive thing.
Possibly my favorite book cover, ever.

As I wrote on Biblivoracious when I couldn't wait another minute to share my opinions after finishing this book, in Coral & Bone, Halen, a nearly 15 year old girl, finds herself having returned to the dreary small beach town where her family lived when her father drowned in open water, which she recalls in images of silvery tails. Halen also finds fire tingling beneath her touch and goes to school with earplugs in to block the overwhelming sensory input of the world around her. Of course, the run-in with mermaids some six years earlier was nothing compared to the drama ignited when she reencounters them after a mysterious young man shows up on her front stoop.

Early on, Halen passes out during a math test because she took out her ear plugs, and this moment sets the stage for the balancing act between her strengths and weaknesses throughout Coral & Bone. Again and again, her abilities push her over the edge, and again and again, she finds herself diminished by them. At times the wording felt ableist. Halen frequently questions her sanity toward the beginning, and yes, I imagine anyone being pulled from the mundane world into a realm with different rules and different beings might question their sanity, or at least struggle with disbelief. However, the frequency of "crazy" and "insane" statements detracted from the meaning of the words, because they felt like they were being used too liberally, and in place of words that better conveyed the context. Was it insane or was it disorienting? A touch more nuance would have been nice.

That said, Coral & Bone was full of delightful surprises- even the predictable parts surprised me. Sure, we all see them coming, but they unfold in subtly different ways, and it feels good to read the well foreshadowed event with the tiny little twist. Duane used foreshadowing well. I like that Halen was set up to be a bit of a swooning Bella, easily overwhelmed, easily captured, easily led along, despite obvious personal power, but then BAM- she makes choices without equivocation and sets her own destiny like a boss. I like Halen, unusual name, myriad personal quirks and all.

I also enjoyed Tiffany Duane's world building. There's a great amount of detail. While she's created a robust world filled with a magic system that relies on strict rules, there's a lot of room for expansion in subsequent books, and to date no flagrant ignoring of the rules constructed, so as to maintain the willing suspension of disbelief throughout the story. Coral & Bone also does this neat cross-genre thing. Yes, it's a paranormal questy fantasy with a romantic angle thrown into the mix, but the underlying story is invariably one about political issues and social justice. The ever present "destroy the bad guy, save the realms" element serves to illuminate the greater problem -- that Elosians truly believe in genocide as a route to national and personal security. The social justice issues dominate the landscape of the story, and make for an interesting tale.

All in all, I'm glad I read it, and now I just want to go swim and contemplate where Duane left off, and all the places she might take the story in the future.

SYNOPSIS:
Halen knows the sparks igniting under her fingertips are dangerous. She has spent her entire life trying to quell the tingly feelings that make her destroy things, but now that she is back in Rockaway Beach, where she watched her father drown, the flames have become impossible to tame.

Halen is trying to hold on, but when she is thrust into a mysterious new world, the underwater realm of Elosia, she unravels the secrets of her past and can’t help but ignite. As she explores Elosia, she realizes her life has been a lie. And when those who have deceived her come to her for help, Halen must choose—walk away or unleash the magick that could destroy them all.

Review: Son of a Mermaid by Katie O'Sullivan

Son of a Mermaid
by Katie O'Sullivan
Crescent Moon Press

Shea MacNamara's life just got complicated. After a freak tornado devastates his Oklahoma farm, the fifteen-year-old orphan is whisked away to Cape Cod. Struggling to make sense of his new surroundings, he's trying hard to deal with feelings of abandonment... and the emotions stirred by a girl he meets along the shore.

Kae belongs to an undersea world hidden from drylanders. The daughter of royal servants, she knows the planned marriage of her Princess to the foreign King should put an end to the war between the clans. But two things stand in the way of lasting peace: the ambitions of the foreign King's regent, and rumors of the Princess's bastard child. Sparks fly when she meets Shea, but could the cute drylander really be the Son of a Mermaid?

I don't think I've ever read a mermaid book before. I remember watching the original Little Mermaid movie (long before the Disney movie came out), but as far as books go, mermaids were new territory for me. That said, I really loved this book.

Shea's character is someone the reader can immediately sympathize with. A tornado claims his father, and because his mother "abandoned" him when he was young, Shea needs to move to Cape Cod to live with his grandmother. That's when he meets Kae. Soon things move forward until Shea discovers not only is Kae a mermaid, but he's the son of one. But the plot goes deeper when Shea discovers there's a secret war taking place below the ocean's surface.

O'Sullivan's description of an underwater world was intriguing, and I felt as though I was right there swimming along with Shea and Kae. I love the image the writer's words created in my mind when the two main characters' legs transformed to mermaid tails. There's plenty of drama and tension too, as the main characters attempt to disrupt the betrayal and scheming taking place in the royal underwater kingdoms.

This was a great read, and I can't wait to read the sequel. I recommend it to anyone who's into mermaid tales (pun intended) and those looking for a different spin on a paranormal read.
