Hatred Day Blog Tour: Interview with TS Pettibone

Today we join the blog tour for HATRED DAY by chatting with the authors who make up the pen name T.S. Pettibone.

Hello and welcome to We Do Write. Tell us a bit about yourselves.

Our names are Brittany and Nicole, and we’re probably not that different from you, in that we love stories. To start things off, we’re identical, mirror-image twins, meaning we’re opposites in many ways. For example, Brittany is left-handed and Nicole is right-handed, etc. Fortunately, we share numerous interests, including writing. We also share a deep appreciation for nature, music, films, books, cars, motorcycles and art. We can both be introverted or extroverted depending upon our environment. And we’re extreme—or dedicated, depending on which way you look at it. We’ll go inside our office, and five months and 300 cups of coffee later we’ll have a finished book.

Tell our readers a bit about HATRED DAY. What’s the story about?

Hatred Day is like a town filled with a hundred different styles of architecture. Readers have told us that they’ve encountered nothing similar. Our story blends science-fiction, fantasy, mystery and romance. To set the stage, we’ll give a few details about the state of the world. In the year 2052, all of humanity is unified against the Inborns, an extraterrestrial species with godlike intelligence and abilities, whose arrival on earth caused an environmental and biological crisis.

The premise of Hatred Day concerns 18-yeard-old Snofrid, a girl who is part-Japanese and part-Inborn. To save her family from execution, she must take part in a hunt that will determine the fate of two worlds. But she not one of the hunters, she’s the bait.

How did the idea of the story come to you?

We’ve always sought to write about the deepest conflict possible in our stories. And the idea of mankind having to coexist with extraterrestrial beings provided ultimate conflict. It was Brittany who thought of the initial premise for Hatred Day, but the story grew and changed as we did over time—9 years to be exact. Before publication in January 2016, it progressed through several titles and dozens of rewrites. Only two or three original story beats exist in the published novel.

Are you a plotter or a pantser?

We’re plotters! Before we touch a keyboard, we outline. Our outlining process is detailed, but we do leave room for spontaneity. When we’re in the thick of writing, often times we realize simpler or better ways to execute plot.

What’s the hardest part of writing for you?

Expectation. We tend to put immense pressure on ourselves, which largely stems from the desire to do justice to the characters, the story and the world we’ve spent so many years planning.

What do you absolutely have to have nearby when writing?

Our King Charles Cavalier, Sherlock. And a tall mug of coffee.

If you could have any super power, what would it be?

We both immediately decided on infused knowledge, meaning we’d want the ability to look at something and know instantly what it is and how it functions. But since we both chose this power, Brittany changed hers to the ability to speak to animals.

What's the weirdest thing you've googled?

Brittany has googled the question: How far can your heart pump blood? For anyone who’s curious, the answer is that the pressure your heart generates is strong enough to squirt blood 30 feet across a room.

Wow, that's amazing!

Nicole has googled music to make her dog fall asleep.

I've done that too. I found a clock ticking works sometimes.
Finish this sentence: If I'm not writing, I'm probably...

Brittany: If I'm not writing, I'm probably exploring.
Nicole: If I'm not writing, I'm probably thinking about writing.

Here’s the part where you thank the people who are supporting you. Let's hear your shout outs.

Firstly, we need to thank our Mom and Dad! Without their loving support and unwavering confidence, we likely would have never realized our dream of being published. We want to thank our younger sister, Isabella, for brainstorming with us, and our first-ever fan, Juliette. Lastly, we want to thank our editor of three years, Matthew, whose constructive criticism, hard work and infinite patience will forever be invaluable to us.

Thanks so much for stopping by the blog!

Interview with Resist author, Tracey Martin

Resist by Tracey Martin
(RedZone Book II)
Publication date: November 17th, 2015
Genres: Fantasy, Young Adult

Truth is a powerful weapon...but explosives never hurt. RedZone, Book 2 Sophia can run but she can't hide. RedZone is on her tail and those of the six tech-augmented soldiers who escaped its clutches with her. If she could only focus on fighting her way to safety, she might live long enough to disappear. But it's not just her own backside she needs to watch out for. At her side is her boyfriend, Kyle. He's the reason she found the courage to escape, and she'll do anything to keep him and his secrets out of RedZone's hands. Only problem is, since she was once sent to capture him, he has good reason not to trust her. In fact, there's not much trust to go around. RedZone keeps finding them, suggesting someone is a traitor. And if that's not enough to recapture the group, the organization has a backup plan. One that will force Sophia and Kyle to choose between safety and risking everything one more time. Warning: Contains killer robots, mutant college students, and dangerous super soldiers. And those are the good guys. It's enough to make a rogue assassin wish she were taking her philosophy final instead.

INTERVIEW

Hi, Tracey! Welcome to We Do Write. Tell us a bit about yourself.
Thanks for having me! I’m mild mannered research consultant by day, and a crazed writer by night. Probably like lots of writers, I have weaknesses for coffee and wine, and I eat way too much chocolate. Although I grew up around Philadelphia, I moved to northern New England for grad school many years ago, and I totally fell in love with the Boston area. Good thing too because I haven’t been able to leave yet.

Tell our readers a bit about RESIST.
If you don’t mind, let me tell you a bit about Revive because Resist is the sequel, and it’s kind of hard to talk about it without spoilers…
Alone in a train station bathroom, Sophia Hernandez has no memory of who she is or how she got there. All she’s certain of are three things: her college ID is a lie, bad people are coming for her, and no one can be trusted.
The only clue to her past is the fellow student who finds her. Although Sophia’s gut tells her Kyle is lying when he claims he can’t help her, his touch makes her heart race. Is it because of a red-hot natural attraction, or a missing memory of something far more dangerous?
As two mysterious, menacing men chase them from the station, Sophia’s memories return in frustrating fragments. So do deadly skills she didn’t know she had. In the next forty-eight hours, a loved one’s life will be on the line as she sifts through a mounting tangle of secrets and lies.
Including the most heart-wrenching secret of all. Not only isn’t she a normal college student, she isn’t even a normal human.
Resist picks up right where Revive ends, continuing Sophia and Kyle’s story. Each book stands alone, but they’re better read together.

How did the idea of the story come to you?
Usually I couldn’t answer this question because I have no clue where my ideas come from, but Revive and Resist were inspired by a movie I watched. I thought it had such an interesting premise, but it never followed through on it. I wanted a chance to redo that story. Of course, the end result doesn’t resemble the movie in any way, but that’s the fun of writing.

Are you a plotter or a pantser?
Definitely a plotter! If I didn’t plan things out, my characters would never do anything except trade barbs.

What’s the hardest part of writing for you?
Plotting, ugh. Taking a premise and turning it into a complete story is just painful for me.

What do you absolutely have to have nearby when writing?
The only thing I need is silence, or close to it. I can’t write in public because of the noise. Coffee doesn’t hurt either though!

If you could have any super power, what would it be?
This is a tough question. I think I’d like amazing healing powers and to never get sick. Maybe it’s not flashy, but if we didn’t have to worry about getting hurt, I think we’d be willing to risk a lot more to help others.

What's the weirdest thing you've googled?
I’m not sure. I’ve googled too many weird things, but researching rates of decomposition in different climates or the temperature need for turning bones into ash—those probably rank up there.

Finish this sentence: If I'm not writing, I'm probably ...
Curled up with a glass of wine, Netflix, and my husband.

Here’s the part where you thank the people who are supporting you.Let's hear your shout outs.
I love that you included this part because I love giving recognition to all the people who support me! I always have to give a shout-out to my husband first because he puts up this crazy-making hobby of mine, and to my editor who helps me make all my books so much better. I’m also super lucky to be a member of a couple great writing groups, and I don’t know what I’d have done without the support of the people in them.

Thanks so much for stopping by the blog! And good luck with RESIST!

About the Author

Tracey Martin grew up outside of Philadelphia, the lucky recipient of a drama-free childhood, which is why she spent so much time reading about other people's lives. It was while she was working on her doctorate in psychology that she had an epiphany--imaginary people are way more fun than real ones. And so she began writing. Never able to choose just one of anything, she currently writes both urban fantasy for adults and contemporary stories for teens.
She likes her coffee simple, her music epic, and her movies to contain explosions. A city girl at heart, she doesn't understand how she and her husband ended up living in New Hampshire, but writing keeps her off the mean, small town streets. You can find her online at tracey-martin.com.

Book Blitz: The Summer Marked by Rebekah L. Purdy

Welcome to our stop on the book blitz for THE SUMMER MARKED by Rebekah L. Purdy. Take a look at this young adult fantasy, and get to know the author a little better by reading how she handles writing from two points of view. There's also a rafflecopter to enter, so be sure to check that out. But first, a looksie at the book cover.

The Summer Marked by Rebekah L. Purdy
(The Winter People #2)
Published by: Entangled: Teen
Publication date: September 22nd 2015
Genres: Fantasy, Young Adult

The sequel to the chilling Winter People returns to the world of Faerie, and is a romantic and enchanting follow-up.

Salome left humankind behind to be with her boyfriend, Gareth, in the Kingdom of Summer. But now forces of darkness are rising. Her happily-ever-after is coming apart, and the Kingdom is on the brink of war.

Newly-single Kadie Byers is on her way home for Thanksgiving, imagining a visit filled with hot chocolate, a hot guy for a little rebound action, and some girl time with her bestie, Salome. Except she receives a message from Salome with two important words: PLEASE HURRY.

When Kadie rushes to help Salome, she’s ripped from the human world and pulled into the kingdoms of Faerie, where she’s shocked to learn that Salome’s monsters are real, and that she’s now at the mercy of one extremely vengeful Winter Queen…

Now both Salome and Kadie must find a way to survive the deadly chaos…or lose themselves to Winter’s deadly, icy grasp.

Writing From Two POVS

I had a blast writing The Summer Marked (book two in the Winter People series), but mostly because I got to create the story from two different characters’ points of view. Kadie and Salome are SUCH different people. Kadie is more bad ass and hardcore, where Salome, who can be tough if she needs to, is a more “soft” kind of character. She kind of wears her heart on her sleeve and cares SO much about people. So it was nice being able to see how each character reacted to their environments.

But these two girls are both in very different types of places within Faerie. Kadie has been dropped right into something out of a horror flick or a fairytale gone wrong. Winter is filled with so much darkness, violence, and nightmarish stuff—a very macabre place. It was tough to write Kadie’s character, because we see how all this evilness is starting to break her down. She’s struggling to remain strong and protect her friend at all costs. But her whole situation seems helpless. It’s like every ray of hope that she has just keeps getting sucked away.

Salome, on the other hand is in Summer. When I was creating Summer all that kept popping into my head was something out of Tolkien novel, kind of like Rivendell. Summer is a HUGE contrast from Winter. It’s beautiful, with fountains, waterfalls, flowers, trees, castles etc. But underneath all the beauty there is a danger for Salome as well—and she learns quickly that not everything that’s “pretty” is nice. She has her own battles to fight, especially since not all the Fae like humans. She trying to find her place in a world where she really doesn’t totally belong or fit into. I had a different kind of fun writing her character. I liked showing her contrast from Kadie. How she had her own “horrors” and political issues she was dealing with. But also showing her grow more of a backbone and into her own so to speak.

The great thing about duo povs is being able to give the reader a bigger look at the setting and characters your writing about. To give them an idea of things outside just the main protagonist’s thoughts. I seriously love this book and hope the readers do as well.

EXCERPT

Jack led me to one side of the walkway, against the window of a bank. After looking around to make sure we weren’t being watched, he reached into his messenger bag and pulled something out to show me.

Cupped in his hand was a creature the size of a large mouse. It—no, he—was dressed in ragged, miniature clothes; his hair was a tangled mass of gold and his eyes were little blue flecks of summer sky. On his back, a pair of diaphanous wings like a dragonfly’s beat slowly, only visible because of the tracery of veins. Around his neck, strung on a piece of cotton, was a glossy pink bead.

The creature resembled Tinkerbell, if she were down on her luck and had grown sharp around the edges. A fairy made from mosquitos rather than butterflies.

“Isla, this is Welkin. He is a piskie.”

“Uh. Hi!” I said brightly, trying to pretend I’d heard of a piskie before now.

“Hello,” Welkin piped. Jack held his hand up so that the tiny fairy was at eye level with me. Welkin bobbed his head in gratitude.

“Please tell Isla what you told me,” the hob said.

He looked me up and down, a gesture that only took in my face. He pursed his lips, eyes narrowed. “Okay,” he said after a moment, putting his hands on his hips. The gesture was adorable but also reminded me of my year seven science teacher. “Do you know about energy flows?”

“Pretend I don’t.”

He craned his neck to frown at Jack before looking back at me. “Right. Every living thing in the world sheds energy. It’s a lot like air. Sometimes it pools, still, and sometimes it flows and you get a breeze or a storm.”

“Like water?”

Welkin scowled. “Like air. This is my metaphor, lady.”

I bit my lip so I didn’t laugh, nodding to indicate he should continue.

“Well, some aosidhe are like mountains. The air bends around them and continues on, but becomes more turbulent. And if there are a bunch of them together you can get wind tunnels and it gets really tricky to fly…” He trailed off, staring distractedly through Jack’s fingers at a passing couple, absorbed in their conversation.

“And other aosidhe?” I reminded him gently.

“Oh, yes. Other aosidhe are more like cyclones, throwing everything around and making a mess.” He sniffed in disapproval.

I wondered which type I was, but decided not to ask. “So you can sense the presence of aosidhe based on this energy movement.”

“Yes. There was one here—” he narrowed his eyes at me “—and now there are two.”

“When did the other one arrive?”

“Today.”
