Samantha Verant
Samantha Vérant is a travel addict, a self-professed oenophile, and a determined, if occasionally unconventional, French chef. Over the years, she’s visited many different countries, lived in many places, and worked many jobs— always on the search for the one thing that truly excited her. Then, one day, she found everything she’s been looking for: a passion for the written word and true love. Writing not only enabled her to open her heart, it led her to southwestern France, where she’s now married to a sexy French rocket scientist she met over twenty years ago, a stepmom to two incredible kids, and the adoptive mother to one ridiculously expensive Bengal cat. When she’s not trekking from Provence to the Pyrénées, tasting wine in American-sized glasses, or embracing her inner Julia Child while deliberating what constitutes the perfect boeuf bourguignon, Samantha is making her best effort to relearn those dreaded conjugations.

Interview With Author Kelly Hashway

Today we are so happy to welcome pub sister and all around awesome person, Kelly Hashway! Kelly's newest book, a Middle Grade Adventure entitled CURSE OF THE GRANVILLE FORTUNE, just released and she is here to answer a few questions.

Kelly Hashway grew up reading R.L. Stein’s Fear Street novels and writing stories of her own, so it was no surprise to her family when she majored in English and later obtained a masters degree in English Secondary Education from East Stroudsburg University. After teaching middle school language arts for seven years, Hashway went back to school and focused specifically on writing. She is now the author of three young adult series, one middle grade series, and several picture books. She also writes contemporary romance under the pen name Ashelyn Drake. When she isn’t writing, Hashway works as a freelance editor for small presses as well as for her own list of clients. In her spare time, she enjoys running, traveling, and volunteering with the PTO. Hashway currently resides in Pennsylvania with her husband, daughter, and two pets.

Howdy, Kelly! Welcome back to We Do Write! Tell us about CURSE OF THE GRANVILLE FORTUNE.

Find the fortune, break the curse!

The hunt is on for an ancient treasure tied to nine-year-old J.B.'s family history. He's been having visions that make him sweaty, lightheaded, and certain he’s turning into some kind of freak—or worse, going insane. But things are worse than he imagined. The visions stem from a family curse. An ancient ancestor was accused of stealing the massive Granville fortune, and now J.B.’s entire family will suffer.

To break the curse, J.B. must find and return the Granville’s stolen property. But he's not the only one searching for the treasure. As he sets out on his journey through a dark and foreboding forest, he'll battle his worst fears and fight terrifying creatures along the way. And when he meets two others who share the missing pieces of his visions and suffer from the same curse, the three soon realize they need to work together to break the curse before it's too late.

So fun! In CURSE OF THE GRANVILLE FORTUNE, your main character is a middle-school aged boy. Did you have any trouble identifying with him?

Oddly enough, no. Even though J.B. is a boy, I really identified with him. Like a lot of kids his age, he worries that he’s different, a freak even. I think we all have felt that way at some time or another. J.B. struggles to find himself and protect the people he cares about, and the fact that he has mind-numbing visions makes everything that much more difficult. While I’ve never had visions, I do believe in ESP and think kids are more in tune with it than adults.

What challenges did you face writing this story?

This was the first book I didn’t write linearly. I wrote the final chapter first, and then went back to the climax, and then to the beginning. I was all over the place because there were key scenes I needed to get down in order to tie all the pieces of the puzzle together. Once I had them drafted, the rest of the story came much more easily, but it was definitely a challenge to break free from my usual pattern of starting from chapter one and writing to the end.

I also write linearly and would probably feel the same way, if I had to break that mold. Who would you say your biggest influences have been?

I feel like I talk about Rick Riordan a lot, but he was a huge inspiration for this book. The Percy Jackson series was by my side while I wrote Curse of the Granville Fortune. I was constantly rereading my favorite parts of those books to make sure I had the voice and pacing right for middle grade readers. I owe Riordan a big thanks for mentoring me through his novels, so to speak.

Tell us something most people don’t know about you? Any unusual hobbies, interests, talents?

I’m such an open book I’m not sure what I haven’t shared online. I can recite the alphabet backwards, I can run a 5K race in 18 minutes, my fingernails grow insanely fast, and I was 34 before I ever dyed my hair. How’s that?

I know you have quite a few published books under your belt, but think back to the beginning and tell us a bit about your journey to publication. What was your experience?

Curse of the Granville Fortune was actually the book I queried agents with. It wasn’t the first book picked up by a publisher though because I ended up going out on submission with my YA novels first. But CotGF did land me my first agent after years of rewriting the book. It went from an adventure story to a fantasy and saw a tense and POV change. Basically, I rewrote EVERYTHING. But it was worth it in the end.

Plotter, or pantser?
Plotter, but the extent to which I plot depends on the book. I have to know the beginning and the end at the very least. Sometimes I’m good with just that. Other times I need pages and pages of notes before I start drafting.

E-books, or hard copies?

Both. I’m always reading two books, one on my Kindle and one paperback or hard cover. I love both formats.

White chocolate, milk chocolate, dark chocolate, or no chocolate?

Dark chocolate! LOVE it.

I'm with you on that one! Is there anyone you would like to thank for supporting you in you journey?

Oh wow, so many people. My family, critique partners, friends, agent, publishing team, my street team, the bloggers who are helping to spread the word about my books, and of course my readers.

Interview with Kelly Hashway

Today I have the pleasure of interviewing an extraordinary author. Meet Kelly Hashway. She's super sweet and super smart and types up books faster than a speeding train. Not that speeding trains type up books, but you get the picture. Anyway, let's have a chat with her, and you'll see how cool she is for yourself!

Welcome to We Do Write, Kelly! Tell us a bit about yourself.

Thanks for having me. Well, I'm a former language arts teacher turned writer and freelance editor. I'm also the mother of a beautiful six-year-old girl. I currently live in PA with my husband, daughter, and our three pets.

How long have you been writing?

I remember writing when I was in elementary school. I wrote short stories and even a novel. But I'd say I got serious about writing in 2009.

Tell us about STALKED BY DEATH, the sequel to TOUCH OF DEATH. What’s the story about?

Stalked by Death is the story of a group of necromancers descended from Medusa who are trying to avoid a war with Hades. Here's the official blurb:

Jodi knows that any slip-ups made by the Ophi—a special group of necromancers born under the 13th sign of the zodiac—will fall on her shoulders... and that Hades is just waiting for them to screw up so he can wipe out the Ophi line.

Unfortunately, Jodi has only convinced one Ophi to join her school: A hot guy named Chase who jeopardizes her relationship with Alex. Jodi loves Alex, but Chase can enhance her powers with just a touch—making her stronger than any Ophi has ever been.

Her mixed emotions send her powers surging out of control, and the dead start rising without her conscious summoning—exactly what Hades doesn't want! If she chooses Alex over Chase, she may lose the battle to Hades, leading the Ophi race to extinction. If she chooses Chase, she might be able to stop Hades for good… but lose everything else.

Jodi needs to figure things out fast--because death is stalking her at every turn.

So cool! How did the idea of the story come to you?

When I originally wrote Touch of Death, I wasn't planning to make it a series, but my agent suggested tweaking the ending, and as soon as I did, I knew there was more story to tell. The pieces sort of fell into place from there.

Do you have a critique group/partner or beta readers, or do you self-edit?

I have a critique group and beta readers, and I self-edit. LOL

The perfect mix! Are you a plotter or a pantser?

I'm a plotter, but I've been known to totally throw my planning out the window and let my characters take over. Still, I go through the planning so I don't ever sit facing a blank screen.

Yay, a fellow plotter! *high fives* What’s the hardest part of writing for you?

I get obsessive when I draft. I want to get the story out as quickly as possible, but life doesn't always allow that to happen. I am a mom, wife, and pet owner after all. Being torn between my characters and my family is tough sometimes.

I totally hear you! What do you absolutely have to have nearby when writing?

A notebook. Even though I have discovered the joy of Scrivener, I still make some cheat sheets by hand in a notebook I keep next to my laptop.

If you could have any super power, what would it be?

I want to be able to teleport. I hate losing time to travel. Think of all the writing I could do if I could just teleport everywhere. :)

That would definitely come in handy. What's the weirdest thing you've googled?

I'm going to have to say morgue walk-in refrigerators. It was for research purposes for this series, but I kind of wonder if my name was flagged after looking into breaking bodies out of morgues. ;)

*shudders at the thought of morgues* But seriously, I think that's the mark of a true writer: getting flagged and put on a watch list. ;)

Quick writing test! Use the following words in a sentence: touch, stalker, and facetious.

I thought she was being facetious when she said she wanted to touch the stalker's abs, but the smile on her face tells me she meant it.

Awesome sentence. Finish this one: If I'm not writing, I'm probably ...

playing with my daughter.

Here’s the part where you thank the people who are supporting you. Let's hear your shout outs.

I have so many people to thank. My family, my amazing agent, Lauren Hammond, everyone at Spencer Hill Press and Month9Books, my CPs, my writer friends, the awesome book bloggers who spread the word about my books, my fellow Scene13 and YA Bound bloggers, and every reader who choses one of my books among the millions out there.
