Today we're taking part in the book blitz for VISION by Lisa Amowitz. Take a look at this awesome-sounding YA paranormal thriller.

Vision
Release Date: 09/09/14
Spencer Hill Press

The light is darker than
you think…

High school student Bobby Pendell already has his hands full—he works almost every night to support his disabled-vet father and gifted little brother. Then he meets the beautiful new girl in town, who just happens to be his boss’s daughter. Bobby has rules about that kind of thing. Nothing matters more than keeping his job.

When Bobby starts to get blinding migraines that come with scary, violent hallucinations, his livelihood is on the line. Soon, he must face the stunning possibility that the visions of murder are actually real. With his world going dark, Bobby is set on the trail of the serial killer terrorizing his small town. With everyone else convinced he’s the prime suspect, Bobby realizes that he, or the girl he loves, might be killer's next victim.

Excerpt
Suddenly, the cafĂ© had become suffocating and Bobby felt the urge to run. Anywhere. But he wasn’t ready to go hanging around the laundromat and increase his odds of running into Gabe. Instead, he took a huge bite of sandwich to keep himself from blurting something rude.

Dana pulled the newspaper toward her, a cascade of stringy hair hanging in her face. Between the strands, Bobby could see her pouty lips move as she read. “My cousin Rosemarie knows this girl,” she said finally, her gaze still trained on the article. “And now the State Police have pulled Daddy into the case…whoops!” Dana clamped a hand to her mouth. “I shouldn’t have said that. Daddy told me never to talk about official police business.”

Bobby leaned forward, angling the paper so he could look at it again. “Why? Is it a murder investigation now?”

“Let it go, Sherlock.” Coco said. “She said she can’t talk about it.”

Bobby rolled his eyes. “Figures. The one time Dana Barclay has something to say, she’s under a gag order.”

Dana’s eyes flashed to his, something cold and sharp behind the softness, like a needle tucked inside a cotton ball. “Why are you so interested, Bobby?”

“Why not? Nothing ever happens in Graxton.”

“You think a girl disappearing is cool?” Dana stared at him, the corners of her mouth tugged downward. It was a known fact that her father, Sheriff Barclay, hated Bobby’s dad. Chuck Barclay and Sam Pendell had been bitter rivals in high school, a feud that continued into their adult years. Somehow, Dad had always managed to keep a step ahead—until he landed in a wheelchair. Hate like that, Bobby thought, doesn’t just go away. It goes underground and festers, eventually seeping into everything.

Dana stood abruptly. “I have to go. Daddy’s picking me up in five. Movie night in Kingston.”

“Have fun,” Bobby said under his breath. Dana glared at him, face flushed, nostrils flared.

After Dana had left, Coco drummed his fingers on the tabletop. “What the hell was that? I know you two aren’t best friends, but can you at least try to be civil?”

“Sorry. I don’t know what’s got into me today.”

Coco frowned. “You sure you’re feeling okay? You look pale, like the skin on your ugly mug is pulled too tight around your skull.”

Bobby cleared his throat and wondered if the day’s strains showed that clearly on his face. “I’m fine. I was just curious, is all. It’s weird, isn’t it, that they’re keeping it all hush-hush? I wonder what’s really going on.”

Coco slanted his head, still gazing at Bobby with his piercing stare. Bobby knew the prospect of a riddle would be too tempting for his friend to pass up. But just why he was so curious, Bobby couldn’t begin to explain.

“I can ask him for you, if you like,” Coco said. “Barclay’s always tripping over himself to be nice to me. I’ll just kind of mention that Dana is upset by the whole thing. See if he bites and throws me some inside info.”
“No! I mean, never mind. I just thought, if you’d heard chatter…”

“So now I’m Homeland Security.” The glint in Coco’s eye was back and Bobby knew he was forgiven. Coco never stayed mad long.

Bobby threw a piece of lettuce at Coco’s head. A crust of bread sailed back at him. Pete started barking and then Aaron rushed over, picked up a napkin and put it over Coco’s eyes, yelling, “Pirate attack!”

Bobby laughed hard as the memory of their years of zaniness washed over him in a warm wave. He joined Aaron in the attack, and helped pull Coco from the chair to the floor. Pete got busy licking everyone, the three of them wrestling and laughing on the floor like puppies.

Jerry’s voice cut through the mayhem. “Excuse me, boys. We seem to have another customer.”

From the tangle of bodies, Bobby looked up. Arms folded, Gabe stood smirking from the doorway. In the confusion, he hadn’t heard the jangle of the door opening. “Looks like fun. Mind if I join in?”

Coco was on his feet in an instant and, smoothing his rumpled clothes, lunged toward her in a few long-legged strides.

“Welcome! Can I get you anything, madam?” He pulled out a chair at the nearest table and gestured toward it. “Please, have a seat! I’m Coco, otherwise known as James Woods, no relation to the actor of the same name.”

Gabe giggled. “Nice to meet you. I’m Gabriella. But call me Gabe.” Bobby sighed. It was no contest. He could never outshine Coco when it came to charm. In this case, maybe that was a good thing.

BREAKING GLASS which will be released in July, 2013 from Spencer Hill Press, is her first published work. VISION, the first of the Finder series will be released in 2014, along with an unnamed sequel in the following year. “Who ate all the damn strawberries?” Aidan yelled. “I was saving them for my cereal.”

“I did. Use the banana,” Josh said.

“A banana isn’t a strawberry. I marked the container with my name. You’re a jerk—”

The container hit the metal wall of the chute with a crack. I always jumped when it did that. I hated it. It reminded me of the banging and crunching we’d heard when Cam’s sub-POD was cut off from the main.

“It’s not time for our blood checks,” I said.

“Maybe it’s strawberries. I’d really like some strawberries… Josh,” Aidan said, an edge to his voice.

“Drop dead,” Josh replied, never looking up from his computer.

David got up from the table where we were having breakfast. Taking the container from the chute, he pulled a manila envelope out of the basket.

He dumped the contents on the table for everyone to see. Inside were ten name badges, one for each of us. Our photos— except Faith’s— and names were printed on one side; the other had barcodes. David scanned the label on the envelope, his face growing pale. “What’s it say, David?” I whispered.

“‘The seals to each sub-POD will be broken tomorrow morning. Do not attempt to leave your sub-POD. Officers will give residents directions and escort them to their appropriate area topside.’ That’s all it says.”

“It’s over,” Tiffany murmured, pulling the baby close.

“Hot damn! Finally, I’m free of this tin can,” Josh jumped up and hurried to the guys’ bedroom.

Well, at least Josh is happy. Why aren’t the rest of us? I thought we’d be excited. But instead everyone looks… anxious. What will we find up there? What has the world become?

“Well, guess we should start packing up our stuff,” Aidan said.

“Yeah, I guess so,” Seth agreed, rising slowly from his seat, rubbing his hands up and down his thighs.

One by one, everyone walked to their sleeping areas and started packing their belongings— except me. I sat in the living room alone, flicking the corner of my name badge with my fingernail. The lanyard wound so tightly around my fingers they turned red. My insides were quivering, jittery. Something wasn’t right. For fifteen months we’d all looked forward to the moment we could leave, but now that the time was here it felt… wrong.

Praise for the Amazon
Bestselling PODs:
"5 Stars! I
loved this book. I have been kind of bogged down with dystopias lately, but
this was amazing. It was so cool to see life before the 'event', to see Eva
wrestle with her choices and then, to watch her change as she lived inside the
PODs...Yes, there are zombies. Yes, there's a little romance. But I think, at its
heart, PODs is a coming of age story about Eva and how she grows from a girl
into a strong, decisive woman during this period of absolute destruction. And
Pickett writes it beautifully." ~ Sherry Ficklin, author of "Extracted"

"I was blown
away by this debut novel from Michelle Pickett! Rather than feeling like I was
reading a book, I actually sometimes felt like I was actually watching the
characters' lives progress; it was kind of weird! The emotions that Eva felt
were so raw and real, and I think Michelle really captured the emotions that
one would be feeling in a post-apocalyptic world...PODs may very well be one of
the next big things in YA, so I am very happy to have been one of the ones that
was part of the beginning of it all! Congrats Michelle on your YA debut and I
am looking forward to more by you!  I gave PODs a
well-deserved 5/5 stars!
  " ~Phil book reviewer at
Stack of Hardbacks

“5
glowing, sparkling stars for this one!...I absolutely adored every character
Michelle introduces us to. This book isn't just about a romance, or two people
fighting some battle. This book allows us to get to know several, amazing,
diverse characters who all grab your heart (even a few who have attitude
issues). They all held such an important place in the story… Now for the plot.
Holy crap!...
Michelle did a flippin' fantastic job giving us each piece of
this puzzle…
I won't go into details about what happens after they are
removed from the POD but O-M-G! The action never stops…This book seriously
needs to be a movie. I could picture every detail and already see it playing
out on screen. PLEASE SOMEONE MAKE THIS HAPPEN!”  ~Jessica of Total Bookaholic

About the Author:
I'm a wife, mother, author, reader, although not always in that order.  I write young adult urban fantasies, science/fiction and paranormal romances and have recently started dabbling in young adult contemporary romance. Reading was one of my earliest passions, writing soon followed. I began writing seriously during college where I graduated Summa Cum Laude with a degree in accounting. Why I chose a career that frowns on creativity remains a mystery.

I’m addicted to Reese’s peanut butter cups and eat way too many while I write, have an abnormal obsession with hoodies and can’t write without one, and I hate to cook, but love to watch cooking shows on television. An unabashed romantic, I love a swoon-worthy ending that will give me butterflies for days.

I wrote my debut young adult novel, PODs, in 2011. PODs, a science/fiction, post-apocalyptic romance, will be released June 4, 2013 through the amazing Spencer Hill Press.  My second young adult title, Milayna, a paranormal romance, will release through Spencer Hill Press beginning in March 2014. Milayna is a standalone, with series potential. It’s meant to be a trilogy. The Infected, a PODs novel, will release November 2014. It is the second, and last, book in the PODs series.

I was born and raised in Flint, Michigan.  I now reside in a small community outside Houston, Texas with my incredibly supportive, not to mention gorgeous, husband, three amazing school-aged children, a 125-pound lap dog, and a snooty cat.

Keep up-to-date with my current, future projects, appearances, and fun giveaways at www.michelle-pickett.com.

Interview with Kelly Hashway

Today I have the pleasure of interviewing an extraordinary author. Meet Kelly Hashway. She's super sweet and super smart and types up books faster than a speeding train. Not that speeding trains type up books, but you get the picture. Anyway, let's have a chat with her, and you'll see how cool she is for yourself!

Welcome to We Do Write, Kelly! Tell us a bit about yourself.

Thanks for having me. Well, I'm a former language arts teacher turned writer and freelance editor. I'm also the mother of a beautiful six-year-old girl. I currently live in PA with my husband, daughter, and our three pets.

How long have you been writing?

I remember writing when I was in elementary school. I wrote short stories and even a novel. But I'd say I got serious about writing in 2009.

Tell us about STALKED BY DEATH, the sequel to TOUCH OF DEATH. What’s the story about?

Stalked by Death is the story of a group of necromancers descended from Medusa who are trying to avoid a war with Hades. Here's the official blurb:

Jodi knows that any slip-ups made by the Ophi—a special group of necromancers born under the 13th sign of the zodiac—will fall on her shoulders... and that Hades is just waiting for them to screw up so he can wipe out the Ophi line.

Unfortunately, Jodi has only convinced one Ophi to join her school: A hot guy named Chase who jeopardizes her relationship with Alex. Jodi loves Alex, but Chase can enhance her powers with just a touch—making her stronger than any Ophi has ever been.

Her mixed emotions send her powers surging out of control, and the dead start rising without her conscious summoning—exactly what Hades doesn't want! If she chooses Alex over Chase, she may lose the battle to Hades, leading the Ophi race to extinction. If she chooses Chase, she might be able to stop Hades for good… but lose everything else.

Jodi needs to figure things out fast--because death is stalking her at every turn.

So cool! How did the idea of the story come to you?

When I originally wrote Touch of Death, I wasn't planning to make it a series, but my agent suggested tweaking the ending, and as soon as I did, I knew there was more story to tell. The pieces sort of fell into place from there.

Do you have a critique group/partner or beta readers, or do you self-edit?

I have a critique group and beta readers, and I self-edit. LOL

The perfect mix! Are you a plotter or a pantser?

I'm a plotter, but I've been known to totally throw my planning out the window and let my characters take over. Still, I go through the planning so I don't ever sit facing a blank screen.

Yay, a fellow plotter! *high fives* What’s the hardest part of writing for you?

I get obsessive when I draft. I want to get the story out as quickly as possible, but life doesn't always allow that to happen. I am a mom, wife, and pet owner after all. Being torn between my characters and my family is tough sometimes.

I totally hear you! What do you absolutely have to have nearby when writing?

A notebook. Even though I have discovered the joy of Scrivener, I still make some cheat sheets by hand in a notebook I keep next to my laptop.

If you could have any super power, what would it be?

I want to be able to teleport. I hate losing time to travel. Think of all the writing I could do if I could just teleport everywhere. :)

That would definitely come in handy. What's the weirdest thing you've googled?

I'm going to have to say morgue walk-in refrigerators. It was for research purposes for this series, but I kind of wonder if my name was flagged after looking into breaking bodies out of morgues. ;)

*shudders at the thought of morgues* But seriously, I think that's the mark of a true writer: getting flagged and put on a watch list. ;)

Quick writing test! Use the following words in a sentence: touch, stalker, and facetious.

I thought she was being facetious when she said she wanted to touch the stalker's abs, but the smile on her face tells me she meant it.

Awesome sentence. Finish this one: If I'm not writing, I'm probably ...

playing with my daughter.

Here’s the part where you thank the people who are supporting you. Let's hear your shout outs.

I have so many people to thank. My family, my amazing agent, Lauren Hammond, everyone at Spencer Hill Press and Month9Books, my CPs, my writer friends, the awesome book bloggers who spread the word about my books, my fellow Scene13 and YA Bound bloggers, and every reader who choses one of my books among the millions out there. I love you all!

And finally, where can people find you and your books online?

You can find my books on Amazon, B&N, Book Depository, and wherever else books are sold.
My blog is: http://kellyhashway.blogspot.com
My website is: www.kellyhashway.com
I'm on Twitter: @kellyhashway
And I'm on FB: https://www.facebook.com/kellyhashway

Kelly, thank you so much for chatting with us. I have shelf space saved specifically for the Touch of Death series!

Happy Book Birthday: Stalked by Death by Kelly Hashway

If you've ever met Kelly Hashway, you'll know what an awesome person she is. And a superb author too! And that's why I'm honored to wish her a happy book birthday for STALKED BY DEATH, book two in the Touch of Death series. Check it out!

Jodi knows that any slip-ups made by the Ophi--a special group of necromancers born under the 13th sign of the zodiac--will fall on her shoulders... and that Hades is just waiting for them to screw up so he can wipe out the Ophi line.
