Soon, he must face the stunning possibility that the visions of murder are actually real. With his world going dark, Bobby is set on the trail of the serial killer terrorizing his small town. With everyone else convinced he’s the prime suspect, Bobby realizes that he, or the girl he loves, might be killer's next victim.

Excerpt
Suddenly, the cafĂ© had become suffocating and Bobby felt the urge to run. Anywhere. But he wasn’t ready to go hanging around the laundromat and increase his odds of running into Gabe. Instead, he took a huge bite of sandwich to keep himself from blurting something rude.

Dana pulled the newspaper toward her, a cascade of stringy hair hanging in her face. Between the strands, Bobby could see her pouty lips move as she read. “My cousin Rosemarie knows this girl,” she said finally, her gaze still trained on the article. “And now the State Police have pulled Daddy into the case…whoops!” Dana clamped a hand to her mouth. “I shouldn’t have said that. Daddy told me never to talk about official police business.”

Bobby leaned forward, angling the paper so he could look at it again. “Why? Is it a murder investigation now?”

“Let it go, Sherlock.” Coco said. “She said she can’t talk about it.”

Bobby rolled his eyes. “Figures. The one time Dana Barclay has something to say, she’s under a gag order.”

Dana’s eyes flashed to his, something cold and sharp behind the softness, like a needle tucked inside a cotton ball. “Why are you so interested, Bobby?”

“Why not? Nothing ever happens in Graxton.”

“You think a girl disappearing is cool?” Dana stared at him, the corners of her mouth tugged downward. It was a known fact that her father, Sheriff Barclay, hated Bobby’s dad. Chuck Barclay and Sam Pendell had been bitter rivals in high school, a feud that continued into their adult years. Somehow, Dad had always managed to keep a step ahead—until he landed in a wheelchair. Hate like that, Bobby thought, doesn’t just go away. It goes underground and festers, eventually seeping into everything.

Dana stood abruptly. “I have to go. Daddy’s picking me up in five. Movie night in Kingston.”

“Have fun,” Bobby said under his breath. Dana glared at him, face flushed, nostrils flared.

After Dana had left, Coco drummed his fingers on the tabletop. “What the hell was that? I know you two aren’t best friends, but can you at least try to be civil?”

“Sorry. I don’t know what’s got into me today.”

Coco frowned. “You sure you’re feeling okay? You look pale, like the skin on your ugly mug is pulled too tight around your skull.”

Bobby cleared his throat and wondered if the day’s strains showed that clearly on his face. “I’m fine. I was just curious, is all. It’s weird, isn’t it, that they’re keeping it all hush-hush? I wonder what’s really going on.”

Coco slanted his head, still gazing at Bobby with his piercing stare. Bobby knew the prospect of a riddle would be too tempting for his friend to pass up. But just why he was so curious, Bobby couldn’t begin to explain.

“I can ask him for you, if you like,” Coco said. “Barclay’s always tripping over himself to be nice to me. I’ll just kind of mention that Dana is upset by the whole thing. See if he bites and throws me some inside info.”
“No! I mean, never mind. I just thought, if you’d heard chatter…”

“So now I’m Homeland Security.” The glint in Coco’s eye was back and Bobby knew he was forgiven. Coco never stayed mad long.

Bobby threw a piece of lettuce at Coco’s head. A crust of bread sailed back at him. Pete started barking and then Aaron rushed over, picked up a napkin and put it over Coco’s eyes, yelling, “Pirate attack!”

Bobby laughed hard as the memory of their years of zaniness washed over him in a warm wave. He joined Aaron in the attack, and helped pull Coco from the chair to the floor. Pete got busy licking everyone, the three of them wrestling and laughing on the floor like puppies.

Jerry’s voice cut through the mayhem. “Excuse me, boys. We seem to have another customer.”

From the tangle of bodies, Bobby looked up. Arms folded, Gabe stood smirking from the doorway. In the confusion, he hadn’t heard the jangle of the door opening. “Looks like fun. Mind if I join in?”

Coco was on his feet in an instant and, smoothing his rumpled clothes, lunged toward her in a few long-legged strides.

“Welcome! Can I get you anything, madam?” He pulled out a chair at the nearest table and gestured toward it. “Please, have a seat! I’m Coco, otherwise known as James Woods, no relation to the actor of the same name.”

Gabe giggled. “Nice to meet you. I’m Gabriella. But call me Gabe.” Bobby sighed. It was no contest. He could never outshine Coco when it came to charm. In this case, maybe that was a good thing.

Interview with TORTURED SOULS author Kimber Leigh Wheaton PLUS Giveaway

It's almost Friday, folks! I'm excited to get to the weekend. How about you? Well, let's make the wait more interesting by chatting with author Kimber Leigh Wheaton as part of her blog tour for TORTURED SOULS.
Kimber Leigh Wheaton is a bestselling YA/NA author with a soft spot for sweet romance. She is married to her soul mate, has a teenage son, and shares her home with three dogs, four cats, and lots of dragons. No, she doesn’t live on a farm, she just loves animals. Kimber Leigh is addicted to romance, videogames, superheroes, villains, and chocolate—not necessarily in that order. (If she has to choose, she’ll take a chocolate covered superhero!) She currently lives in San Antonio, TX but has been somewhat a rolling stone in life, having resided in several different cities and states.

Hi, Kimber! Welcome to We Do Write. Tell us about TORTURED SOULS. What’s the story about?
Sometimes Rest in Peace isn't an option
Kacie Ramsey sees ghosts—and it's ruining her life. Her mother left, her father blames her, and no matter how hard she tries, she can't keep the ghosts away. Now a new power has emerged. Nightly visions of grisly murders and a relentless predator draw her to the brink of insanity.
When the phantom appears at a party, Kacie's longtime crush, Logan, saves her. He invites her to join the Orion Circle, a group of supernatural hunters with chapters in schools all over the country. Through the Circle, Kacie learns to embrace her spiritual powers, and for the first time in her life she feels in control rather than a victim.
But the Foxblood Demon will not give up so easily. A demented serial killer in life who trapped the souls of the thirteen children he murdered, imprisoning them within the walls of his mansion. Now in death, he plots his return while drawing power from the pure souls of the children. He recognizes something in Kacie he's never seen before—a medium powerful enough to provide a vessel for his tainted soul.
Kacie can't ignore the tortured souls of the children crying out to her every night. With Logan at her side, she will fight the Foxblood Demon. But can they banish this powerful phantom, or will Kacie lose not only her body, but her eternal soul to the monster.

Spooky! How did the idea of the story come to you?
I’ve always been obsessed with the paranormal, especially ghosts. One night I was watching A Haunting on TV, and I thought writing about a physical medium would be interesting. I thought about it for a few weeks, and ultimately came up with the idea for the Orion Circle, a group of teenage paranormal investigators.
Are you a plotter or a pantser?
I suppose I’m a pantser—I gave up on written outlines long ago. Before starting a novel, I meditate off and on for several weeks, getting to know the characters and the world. Plot ideas come and go in my mind, until I have a rough idea of the full plot. Individual scenes aren’t planned in advance but kind of flow as I write.
What’s the hardest part of writing for you?
The beginning of each chapter is the hardest for me to write. I’m sure that comes from being a pantser. Without an outline, I’m flying blind. Sometimes I just start typing and hope for the best.
Sounds like a plan. What do you absolutely have to have nearby when writing?
Diet Coke
What are you reading right now?
Evolution: HEX by S.A. Huchton
If you could have any super power, what would it be?
I want to be a shapeshifter with the ability to change into any animal I like at any time.
What's the weirdest thing you've googled?
I’m sure it was something Mommy related when my son was either an infant or toddler. I know I Googled whether orange and purple stuff was normal in a diaper. For the record—yes it is normal. Those baby food carrots and beets will cause it.
Quick writing test! Use the following words in a sentence:  envelope, torture, remind.
Remind me not to use my tongue to moisten the envelope since the resulting paper cut is always pure torture.
Finish this sentence: If I'm not writing, I'm probably ...
playing video games
Here’s the part where you thank the people who are supporting you. Let's hear your shout outs.

Thank you to everyone who helped me get Tortured Souls ready for publication. The first self-pubbed book is the hardest. I didn’t realize just how many hoops my publisher jumps through until I took it on myself. Thanks to all the bloggers who have helped me promote my new release. Thanks to my family for listening to me talk about writing for endless, boring hours.
Thanks for joining us on the blog, Kimber. It was a pleasure taking part in your blog tour. Good luck with the book!

Book Blitz: Hideous by Devon McCormack

Today we're blitzing Hideous by Devon McCormack. Check out this creepy-sounding young adult paranormal.

Hideous by Devon McCormack
Publication date: June 19th 2014
Genres: Paranormal, Young Adult

Eight years ago, Luke Retter witnessed the brutal murder of his mother and sister at the hands of his demon-possessed father. He survived but lost a hand and an eye. The demon also burned its emblem into his skin, marking him as a cursed. Those who bear this mark are at risk of becoming possessed themselves, so they are monitored and enslaved by the state-run UCIS. Working as a slave is hard, but Luke prefers it to the possibility of being controlled by a demon.

One night, Luke wakes to find his worst nightmare coming true. His father’s demon has returned. In a panic, he runs to the only person who might be able to help: Zack, a cursed who ran away from the state and created an underground community to protect other fugitive curseds. Zack helps him suppress the demon. But the city’s become a time bomb, and Luke’s demon itches to escape.

With the UCIS closing in on Zack’s underground operation and Luke’s demon crafting its own, nefarious plot, Luke realizes that he must take a stand.

Devon McCormack spends most of his time hiding in his lair, adventuring in paranormal worlds with his island of misfit characters. A good ole Southern boy, McCormack grew up in the Georgian suburbs with his two younger brothers and an older sister. At a very young age, he spun tales the old fashioned way, lying to anyone and everyone he encountered. He claimed he was an orphan. He claimed to be a king from another planet. He claimed to have supernatural powers. He has since harnessed this penchant for tall tales by crafting whole worlds where he can live out whatever fantasy he chooses.

A gay man himself, McCormack focuses on gay male characters, adding to the immense body of literature that chooses to represent and advocate gay men's presence in media. His body of work ranges from erotica to young adult, so readers should check the synopses of his books before purchasing so that they know what they're getting into.

But during the day, she shelves books at the local library, trying to not let anyone know that she can do things—things like change the color of her eyes or walk through walls. Interview with Stuart West

Today I have the honor of interviewing a long time writer friend of mine, Stuart West. Stuart is the author of the Tex, the Witch Boy series. Having read the first two books, I can honestly say you've got to check them out!

Welcome to We Do Write, Stuart. Tell us a bit about yourself.

Hey, Dorothy, thanks for having me here. I slaved away in the corporate world as a graphic designer (A terrible one! Working at a terrible company!) for about 28 years. The stars aligned, the company collapsed, my wife is awesome, so I’m now a writer (hope I’m not as bad at writing as I was an artist). My wife’s a zillion times smarter than me—a professor of pharmacy—and my 21 year old daughter (look out!) is a zillion times prettier than me.

How long have you been writing?

Two-and-a-half years. (I know it doesn’t sound impressive, so let’s break it down into “dog years.”…Eighteen years!)

LOL, that's a long time. ;) Tell us about the Tex series. What are the stories about?

I suppose the Tex, The Witch Boy series can be described as a YA paranormal, suspense, mystery, comedic, dramatic catch-all. My “hero,” Tex, is a regular high school kid. The mantle of witchhood is thrust upon him through no choice of his own. Genetics, like acne. It also makes him a supernatural trouble magnet, stumbling into dangerous situations. There’s a serial killer picking off bullies in the first book.

But you know what really interests me? The awkward, painful, real memories of high school. And I’m writing about topical teen issues. The first book, Tex, The Witch Boy, is about bullying (practically a true story except for the witch stuff, natch). The second one, Tex And The Gangs Of Suburbia deals with high school violence and identity. The third (out in December) deals with religion, teen suicide, and gay lifestyles (I’m ambitious even if I don’t succeed!).

How did the idea of the story come to you?

Dorothy, I remember being a teen all too well. No one (adults or writers) spoke to me, no one understood me, dang it (fists raised to the skies in my best drama-queen fashion)! It’s the kinda’ book I would’ve loved to have read back then. And my parents could’ve benefited from reading something like this. I’m exorcising high school demons and having a heckuva’ lotta’ fun doing it.

Do you have a critique group/partner or beta readers, or do you self-edit?

I have a few trusted writer/critique folks. But the best? Family members. ‘Cause they feed on your ego (Kidding! My wife’s as painful a critic as I’ve ever met.) I also have a fantastic editor through my primary publisher, MuseItUp, Tanja Cilia. Tanja, take a bow!

Are you a plotter or a pantser?

Hm. I do put on pants to plot. Can’t write a lick in my underwear.

LOL. What’s the hardest part of writing for you?

REVISIONS! Gah! And promoting! Love the initial creative process.

What do you absolutely have to have nearby when writing?

A beer. No. Six beers. No, wait, that’s not quite right. Water balloons to lob at the neighborhood kids. Yeah. Essential.

Hehehe, I can see that as a writing reward. If you could have any super power, what would it be?

Super incredible mind-reading powers. I’d be able to fathom the female mind in a single leap and not make them mad (I’m surrounded by women. Wife, daughter, mother, fellow female writers…my core group!). And I’d kinda’ like the power to turn into a rock if granted a second power. Only because I’ve always wondered what a rock thinks.

What's the weirdest thing you've googled?

Animal tranquilizers, lock-picking, serial killer van sound-proofing. And that was just for fun! Then the serious research started…

Of course. ;) Quick writing test! Use the following words in a sentence: cryptic, taste, and languid.

The previously languid waiter leaned over and delivered a cryptic message, “The meatballs taste…strange.”

Finish this sentence: If I'm not writing, I'm probably ...

…watching a bad genre film from the ‘70’s.

Very cool! Here’s the part where you thank the people who are supporting you. Let's hear your shout outs.

Cydney, my wife! Sarah, my daughter! Cybil, my split personality! Love you guys (except for Cybil, ‘cause that’s just not right).

And finally, where can people find you and your books online

Here’s the good news. On the MuseItUp Bookstore website, you can buy the first AND second Tex books for the price of one! Just for a while, though, I think.

Super special AmazeBalls Deal! Act fast, hit up the MuseItUp website, and you can buy both the Tex books for the price of one! My publisher's going cray-cray! But don't tell her and buy! Our lil' secret!http://museituppublishing.com/bookstore2/index.php?page=shop.product_details&flypage=flypage.tpl&product_id=759&category_id=281&manufacturer_id=277&option=com_virtuemart&Itemid=1
