Emma Right is a happy wife and homeschool mother of five living in the Pacific West Coast of the USA. Besides running a busy home, and looking after their five pets, which includes two cats, two bunnies and a Long-haired dachshund, she also writes stories for her children. She loves reading, and when she doesn't have her nose in a book, she is telling her kids to get theirs in one.

Interview with Tia Silverthorne Bach PLUS Giveaway

What? The weekend is over already? How did that happen? Oh well, we should at least make the most of it, right? I say we indulge in an interview. Want to join me? Well, come along! Today we're talking with author Tia Silverthorne Bach about her novel, CHASING MEMORIES.

Welcome to We Do Right, Tia. Tell us a bit about yourself.

First, thanks so much for hosting me today.

You're very welcome. How long have you been writing?

Since I was able to pick up a pencil and form words.

Tell us about CHASING MEMORIES. What’s the story about?

Reagan is a typical seventeen year old, excited about prom, picking a college, and hanging out with her friends and boyfriend. That is until a family camping trip goes horribly wrong. Is she losing her mind or has she just stepped into a world she thought only existed in books? Caught in a web of worried parents, competing boys, Wiccan relatives, protective amulets, and psychiatrist babble, Reagan must determine the truth before it’s too late.

How did the idea of the story come to you?

My teenage daughter, who is obsessed with the paranormal/fantasy genre, has passed some great books to me over the years. It made me start to wonder how young adults would process a catastrophic event that hinted at a paranormal reality. What if the vampires, angels, werewolves, fairies, and other paranormal creatures they loved reading about really existed?

Do you have a critique group/partner or beta readers, or do you self-edit?

Although I’m a word nerd, I believe self-editing is only a first step. I have been an editor for business publications and now edit novels and short stories, but I know better than to serve as sole editor for my work. Not only is it hard to be completely objective, but it’s also hard to spot mistakes in a manuscript that is imprinted in your brain and heart. After several of my own edits, I handed Chasing Memories over to a professional editor and several beta-readers. Their input was invaluable.

Are you a plotter or a pantser?

I appreciate the structure of being a plotter, but as much as I’ve tried to embrace it, I am a complete pantser. Often, I don’t see what’s coming until I start typing it.

What’s the hardest part of writing for you?

Having my fingers type as quickly as the story develops in my brain. It’s hard to capture on paper all the things going on in my imagination.

What do you absolutely have to have nearby when writing?

Food. I don’t want anything to force me to leave the chair once I’m in the writing groove, and I have a stomach that knows what it wants when it wants it. Without food, hunger would take over my brain and the words would dissipate, and we couldn’t have that. I don’t over-indulge, but I make sure I’m energized for the exercise of writing.

If you could have any super power, what would it be?

An unfailing memory. Not only do I want to remember every detail of my life, both painful and happy, so that I can be a better writer, I also want to never forget a possible storyline or plot development.

What's the weirdest thing you've googled?

How to take care of a wild American toad. Two of my daughters are infatuated with toads, and we “rescued” a couple after a rainstorm. My girls needed to know every weird fact about their new friends, Bella and Jacob.

They rode hard all day, stopping occasionally to rest the horses and grab a bite to eat. Krissa rode her own horse this time, grateful that at least the horse knew what to do. It patiently explained what she did wrong, and how to correct it. As the day progressed, so did Krissa's riding ability…and the pain in her legs and butt.

The spectacular views made it worth the effort. As the setting sun painted the sky, it took Krissa's breathe away. Cresting the hills they'd been crossing all day, an amazing golden red-orange glow sent flames of light across the valley. A huge, city-like fortress sat nestled in red gold with elegant peaks of towers and spires reaching into the sky. The entire valley was alive.

"The Fortress of Light, Your Majesty," Lord Naren said to Khevin. He pulled his horse to a stop, and allowed the glorious view to flood the senses.

"Wow," Krissa said under her breathe.

"It's something, isn't it," Pin said more than asked, pulling her horse beside Krissa. "Wait till you see the gardens. I remember living there when I was little…Until Tomás and his coup."

Young Lord Nester pulled up to Krissa's other side. He had avoided her completely until then. "I've come to apologize for my offensiveness, Lady Alverna. Please forgive me before another night passes, and accept my gratitude for what you have taught me."

Dumbfounded, Krissa couldn't think of anything to say. So, she nodded her acceptance, and the young man smiled with relief before charging forward.

"We run," the horse neighed its brief warning and bolted forward with the others.

Krissa grabbed at the saddle horn and found a handful of mane with it. Holding tight, to keep her balance, she relished the gust of wind in her hair.

"Fun, fun," said Reza's voice.

Reza had gone invisible when the elf scouts showed up the day before, and hadn't been seen since. Krissa had wondered about her little friend.

AUTHOR BIO

I grew up in Vermont mostly and now live in Virginia with my family (those still at home). My husband and I have a blended family of seven kids. My childhood was spent moving around a lot. (non-military) About five years ago, we started home-schooling our youngest children. Now there are only two remaining in home-school. I have tried to nurture the love of books in our children and now our grandchildren -- always nurturing their imaginations. Recently, I have become active in our community with literacy, starting a local (and online) creative writing club and volunteer tutoring at the Adult Learning Center.
I struggle with Fibromyalgia and PTSD. So, have to be careful not to overdo things... I don't always listen to my own advice. I have a dry, sarcastic and corny sense of humor and always try to look at things optimistically. (again not always successful) However, I feel that if I don't give up -- for long -- then things will work out for the best eventually.

“Have you seen Eirik?” I asked.

The smile disappeared from Cora’s face. “A few minutes ago. I left him with this group of new exchange students his parents are sponsoring. One of them is the QB. He’s pure hotness.” Cora fanned her face. “I’m talking about leather jacket, a Harley, sexy eyes. He doesn’t say much, but he’s a chick magnet. If I wasn’t crushing on someone else, I’d go for him in a big, big… Oh, there they are.”

I followed the direction of her gaze. Eirik stood at the end of the hallway with Torin, Andris, Ingrid, and a gorgeous dark-haired girl in a trendy dark gray sweater dress, matching tights, and black knee-length boots. From the way her arm was linked with Ingrid and Andris, I’d say she was a Valkyrie. Her hair was held back in a high ponytail like a dancer. When she kissed Andris on the cheek and reached for Torin’s arm, I wanted to march over there and yank her arm away.

“Who’s that?” I whispered.

“Lavania something-or-other. A long foreign name,” Cora explained. “She’s gorgeous, funny, and guys bend over backwards to please her. Makes you want to hate her, but you can’t. No one can.” Cora sighed.

“Why not?”

“She’s super nice and sweet.”

So that was my trainer? What was her relationship with Torin? I hated her already. Hated the way she leaned against Torin’s arm. Hated that she could touch him while I couldn’t. It hurt to see him with someone else.

As though he felt my eyes on him, Torin turned his head, looked over his shoulder, and met my gaze. I held my breath. Waited to see what he’d do. He cocked his brow.

My face warm, I focused on Cora. If she’d noticed the look we shared, she didn’t say anything. Thank goodness her memories of the Valkyries were wiped too or she’d remember how Torin often stared at me.

“So, who’s your secret crush, Cora Jemison?”

“Uh, there’s a reason it’s called a secret, nosey. Back to Lavania. She’s invites us to their house every time our paths cross, but Eirik always says we have plans. I have a feeling he doesn’t like her.”

From Cora’s voice, she loved it. I wondered if she and Eirik had hooked up while I was gone. I hoped so. They would be great together. We stopped by the door of my math classroom. Torin still watched us. Lavania followed his gaze, smiled, and waved. Cora waved back. Eirik’s back was to us, but he, too, turned to see what the others were looking at.

He grinned. I frowned when the girl, Lavania, did something strange. She tilted her head toward Eirik. In a different setting, I’d say she’d just bowed. Or maybe it was my imagination.
