Santa Muerte Blog Tour: Interview with Lucina Stone

Today we're joining the San Muerte blog tour by interviewing author Lucina Stone. Lucina Stone has a Master of Arts Degree in Clinical Counseling and is a Licensed Professional Counselor specializing in depression, family conflict, LGBT affirmative therapy, and life coaching. She lives in New Jersey with her family. This is her debut novel.

Hi, Lucina! Welcome to We Do Write. Tell our readers a bit about SANTA MUERTE. What's the book about?

The book is Daniela Delgado discovering that she is a witch, the hard way. It is a parallel story about a mother, daughter, and grandmother.

THE YEAR IS 2030. IN A DRAMATIC, final attempt to free her inner demons, twenty-year-old Daniela Delgado tempts fate and winds up on a strange farm in 1923. With an olive complexion due to her Mexican/Italian heritage and a fresh pixie cut, she is mistaken for a “boy of color.” Her only shot at survival now is to play it cool, pose as “Danny,” and figure out how to get back home to her two, loving moms.

And then she meets Daphne—an abused, motherless farm girl in desperate need of freedom and a friend. Having escaped Daphne’s father, the two of them are now roaming the streets of New York City disguised as a young aristocrat and her male servant. They’re running out of money, and ideas. And Daniela thought living in 2030 was tough.

But her solar powered smart phone works. And there’s someone within range. She pings them. A selfie of an attractive male comes in with the text: I’m Lain. Who the f— are you? Even in that moment, Daniela knows this can’t be safe, but what are her choices? They meet Lain at a speakeasy on the Lower East Side. When Daniela reveals her last name, Lain says the only Delgado he knows is Anaya—the head of the Santa Muerte Coven of witches in Merida, Mexico. And then he hints that Daniela is a liar, even though she rocks a man’s three-piece suit like no woman he’s ever met. And as for her tattoos? Don’t get Lain started….

Despite the intrigue, Daniela adds Lain to the list of folks Daphne and she must outrun to stay alive. But as they plan their trip to Mexico, they soon discover that list is much longer than they thought. And they uncover a few other things, too, about Daniela’s true identity….

How did the idea of the story come to you?

The idea of the story came to me in a dream and has been haunting me ever since.

Are you a plotter or a pantser?

Definitely a plotter. Before I sit down to write, I already have an outline in my head.

What’s the hardest part of writing for you?

Having the free time to do it. It’s hard with a family and everyday life. I need a cabin in Maine and wifi.

What do you absolutely have to have nearby when writing?

My poodle Sophie, she provides me great comfort and company.

If you could have any super power, what would it be?

It would be the ability to hear peoples thoughts.

What's the weirdest thing you've googled?

Oh, wow. I get pretty weird. All the witchcraft, voodoo, juju and black magic pictures get pretty strange.

Finish this sentence: If I'm not writing, I'm probably ...

 visualizing the next chapters.

Here’s the part where you thank the people who are supporting you. Let's hear your shout outs.

Shout outs to my Brother Angelo, My husband Michael, My parents and of course My daughters.

Thanks so much for stopping by the blog!

Book Blitz: Not Quite Dead by Lyla Payne

Today we're joining the book blitz for NOT QUITE DEAD by Lyla Payne. Take a look at this new adult paranormal mystery.

Not Quite Dead by Lyla Payne
(A Lowcountry Ghost Story)
Publication date: April 1st 2014
Genres: Mystery, New Adult, Paranormal

A broken engagement sends Graciela Harper crawling back to Heron Creek with her tail between her legs, but finds the sleepy little town too changed to set her life right. Not even her budding drinking problem can obscure her Gramps’s failing health, or erase the mental picture of her first love happily married to her childhood best friend. To top it all off, she’s having a heck of time convincing the town’s dashing young mayor of her unfit-for-dating status.

When the ghost of 18th century lady pirate Anne Bonny starts insisting on a near daily audience, Graciela has to confront something else she never expected—being certifiably nuts at twenty-five years old.

Her brand new “I don’t give a crap” attitude makes it easy to dismiss the mysterious threats that seem to be tied to her search for more information on the long dead pirate, but when her family becomes a target, Gracie knows she needs to find out why the ghost insists on being a constant, reeking companion.

If Graciela can put aside her prejudice against people without a pulse, she may discover that Anne Bonny’s problems are intricately linked with her own. The past harbors answers could help the cantankerous spirit find closure, but she is, after all, already dead. If Graciela doesn’t move fast, she might find herself doing the haunting, instead of the other way around.

And whether they’re prepared or not, it’s about to be unearthed.

Excerpt

“Tomb?” I gulped, glancing around. “Gav…”

“This isn’t just a secret passage,” he said, looking up to study the ceiling. “It’s a grave.”

“What kind of grave?” I slowly rose to my feet, crossing my arms over my chest. A cold, slithering chill crept down my spine, and I could have sworn I felt the temperature drop. “I’m ready to get out of here, now.”

“Wait, baby, we need to do what the Book of the Ancients says. Isn’t that how this stuff works?”

“That was before. We’re not frozen souls anymore, Gav. GĂ©rard’s positively gone. There are no witches trying to help us destroy the curse. Whatever this is, it’s not the same. I can feel it…something’s off.”

“We can’t defend ourselves like we used to,” Gavin said quietly, his gaze roaming the floor. “If this is some kind of threat, we’re at its mercy. We have to know what to tell these people when we leave this passage.”

Tomb,” I corrected him, feeling another chill skate over my spine. “We’ll figure out what to say when we get home. I don’t care. I’m getting out of here. I don’t want to know…whatever’s in that box, I just don’t want to know, okay?”

“Cam,” Gavin stepped in front of me, taking my face in his hands, “we can’t just walk away from this, you know that, love.”

“No.” The word came out hard and cold. A stern plea. “The second we do what that book tells us, there’s no turning back. I’m not ready.” I squeezed my eyes shut and shook my head. “Everything’s been so good…so, so good here. Let’s walk away from this, please.”

“You know that’s not an option."

Interview with Juliana Haygert

Today, we are happy to have an interview with Juliana Haygert, author of The Everlast Trilogy.

While Juliana Haygert dreams of being Wonder Woman, Buffy, or a blood elf shadow priest, she settles for the less exciting--but equally gratifying--life of a wife, mother, and author. Thousands of miles away from her former home in Brazil, she now resides in Connecticut and spends her days writing about kick-ass heroines and the heroes who drive them crazy.

Welcome to We Do Write, Juliana. Tell us a bit about yourself.

Hi there. First, thank you for having me! I’m a writer, author, wife, mom, friend, crazy lady, former ballerina, avid reader.

How long have you been writing?

Since I was 13yo, but it was just a hobby. It wasn’t until 2009 that I started thinking about the possibility of publishing.

Tell us about SOUL OATH. What’s the story about?

Soul Oath is the sequel of Destiny Gift. It follows the story of Nadine, Victor, Micah, and Ceris, and
some other characters … and I can’t say much more without revealing big things from the end of Destiny Gift ;)

Ahh .... Okay. With that in mind, here's a little blurb of DESTINY GIFT.

Thirty years in the future, a sinister New York City exists in permanent darkness.

A student at the secured NYU, nineteen-year-old Nadine has visions of Victor Gianni, an imaginary guy she has real feelings for. Afraid of being truly insane, she explains the visions away as simple daydreams, but she can no longer deny them when she bumps into
Victor in real life. But this Victor doesn’t know her, and turns her away. After the encounter, Nadine’s visions change to those of eerie fates, gods she’s never heard of, demons with sharp claws they are not too timid to use … and instructions.

To discover if she’s losing her mind, Nadine follows the vague directions—with the real, rude and reluctant Victor—leading to a man who knows it all: Nadine can restore an ancient creed by unveiling the clues on her visions, and bring sunlight and peace to the world again. But that’s only if the demons and the other evil forces behind the darkness don’t stop her first.

Great premise. I love the idea of New York City cast in total darkness. How did the idea of the story come to you?

My husband. No, seriously, we were talking books and ideas, and he always said I had to write one about gods and mythology, because he loves this kind of stuff. So, he asked, what if you wrote about immortals gods, and then, one of them dies – for real. They thought they were immortal, but they aren’t! And, from that, the rest came to me pretty easily.

Do you have a critique group/partner or beta readers, or do you self-edit?

I used to have critique partners – I think I still do lol – but everyone’s schedule is so crazy lately. Now, I do a few rounds of critique with my editor. Self edit? Only one round before sending it to my editor the first time and even then I know she’ll find lots of things to work on lol

Oh, I know. Believe me, I know. Are you a plotter or a pantser?

A mix of both, though I’m trying to become more of a plotter. Soul Oath had a loose outline and it worked. I guess that when writing series, it’s easier to go with an outline.

Yes, but pantsing is such a hard habit to break. What’s the hardest part of writing for you?

Editing … I love writing. I could live on it. But editing kicks my butt.

What do you absolutely have to have nearby when writing?

Music. Something to drink (depending on the hour of the day, it can be water, coffee, coke, or wine =P). And for the past couple of weeks, a scented candle …

What are you reading right now?

Sentinel by Jennifer L. Armentrout. Probably, by the time you post this interview, I’ll have read another 4 or 5 books ;)

If you could have any super power, what would it be?

I want so many superpowers … can I be like Korra and control five elements?

Sure! Why not? What's the weirdest thing you've googled?

Hm, bah, tough one. I have a terrible memory for this kind of thing. Seriously, can’t think of a thing.

Quick writing test! Use the following words in a sentence: soul, swear, and penguin.

The penguin swore to give his soul to the moon!

Not sure if I could change the tense on the verb, but there you have it. The best I could come up with in 2 seconds lol

That's perfect! Finish this sentence: If I'm not writing, I'm probably ... reading or dancing. Or cooking. Or playing with my kid lol

Here’s the part where you thank the people who are supporting you. Let's hear your shout outs.

My family, my friends, my writer friends, the gang from NA Alley and the #row80 sprint. My editor for sure. My cover designer too!

And finally, where can people find you and your books online?

Amazon | Barnes&Noble | Kobo | iBooks | Goodreads

Thanks for having me! :)

It was our pleasure. Thanks for joining us.

Interview with Phaedra Seabolt

Happy Friday, everyone! Let's chime in the weekend by chatting with author Phaedra Seabolt. Phaedra's here today as part of her blog tour to talk about her new adult paranormal novel, IMPERFECTION.

Welcome to We Do Write. Tell us a bit about yourself.

I am a stay at home mom of one with another on the way. My husband and I have been trying to sell our house for almost 5 years now. Pretty much my life revolves around my family, house, writing, and reading for book reviews.

How long have you been writing?

I like to say I have been writing my whole life. I have a master's degree which means I spent a lot of time in school where I was constantly writing. It just was academic writing instead of creative. I have only been writing creatively for a year.

Tell us about IMPERFECTION. What’s the story about?

Well it's about a college girl named Meara Falk. She's nerdy and overweight, not the standard Miami University student. She's also a very good girl, meaning she does everything mommy and daddy tell her to do. However, she decides to break the rules one night and ends up in bed with a complete stranger. Her single indiscretion results in a baby. Her life starts spiraling out of control at this point. She gets attacked by a werewolf and her baby is stolen from her by a rival werewolf pack. Now she is on a mission to get her son back.

How did the idea of the story come to you?

Through a dream! I had just finished reading Stephanie Nelson's Taming the Wolf and was dreaming about werewolves. One night I woke up from a dream that I just had to write down.

Do you have a critique group/partner or beta readers, or do you self-edit?

My long time best friend is always the first person to read my work. She is amazing with grammar. After her, I had a few people from a writing group I am in read it. Finally it went to my publisher and editor.

Are you a plotter or a pantser?

A little of both. I wrote down a very short outline before I started writing, but while writing I let my characters tell me where they wanted to go.

What’s the hardest part of writing for you?

Time. It's hard to make enough time to write everything down when I think if it due to chasing a toddler around.

What do you absolutely have to have nearby when writing?

A really big drink, and I don't mean alcoholic. I hate having to get up to refill my drink while writing.

If you could have any super power, what would it be?

Teleportation. I would be one happy person if I could eliminate all my driving without giving up visiting my family.

What's the weirdest thing you've googled?

Ummm...I really don't know. I use google daily so it is hard to remember what I have searched for. I really couldn't say.

Quick writing test! Use the following words in a sentence: perfect, imp, and affection.

If there were such a thing as a perfect imp, Sadonicles would claim to be it with one exception, his ultimate flaw of showing affection.

Finish this sentence: If I'm not writing, I'm probably ...

Watching my son play with his toys.

Here’s the part where you thank the people who are supporting you. Let's hear your shout outs.

I definitely have to thank my best friend Raechel Moermond for helping me with the initial editing process. Also, my husband for listening to me ramble and helping me fill in the details of my ideas. My entire family for supporting me in this endeavor. I also have to thank the authors that encouraged me to write a book in the first place: Mandie Stevens, C.G. Powell, Tawdra Kandle, Melissa Lummis, Liz Schulte, Jessica Gibson, and Lola James. Without them, I may not have taken myself seriously. In that list of authors is also my publisher and editor, whom I am eternally grateful to. Finally thanks to Stephanie Nelson for inspiring me and making the cover. I hope I haven't left anyone out and if I did I am sorry.

And finally, where can people find you and your books online?
