Spotlight Post: Haunt My Heart by Lisa Medley

Welcome to a special Saturday posting on We Do Write. Today we're featuring fellow writer Lisa Medley, whose novel HAUNT MY HEART just released.

Haunt My Heart by Lisa Medley
Paranormal Romance: Ghost, Witchcraft, Hex

Blurb:
A Civil War soldier dies to save his men. Can he find true love to live again?
Sarah Knight has a job she’s good at, a quirky BFF, and a boyfriend who’s bad for her. When Sarah unearths a Civil War artifact on a ghost hunt at Chatham Manor, she brings home more than a souvenir
Lieutenant James “Tanner” Dawson fought for the Union, working as a supernatural liaison for his Major General in a secret Masonic offset called the Brothers of Peril. When he’s hexed by a witch, he learns the only way to save his men is to die himself. But death is not the end. Awakening 150 years later, he knows if he wants to be corporeal again, he has to find true love to break the hex—a task no easier in 21st century than it was in the 19th.

Excerpt from Haunt My Heart: After 150 years hexed to a ring, Tanner is reawakened.

Tanner woke screaming.
Anger, not fear, set him off. The question was what had awakened him in the first place? And after all this time. At least it had seemed like a long time. Being dead made it hard to keep track. He’d counted sunrises for months after he’d died, but even that became too taxing after a while. And when he’d finally been crushed into the ground and damned to the darkness, he’d lost all hope.
His life energy had begun to wane immediately upon his death and his semi-corporeal form—his ghost self—had dissipated a few days after his men removed his body from the battlefield. Not that it would have mattered anyway. No one could see him. He’d tried to make contact as the soldiers crossed by him: screaming, begging, anything to get their attention. To tell them he wasn’t dead. Not really. When he noticed the soldiers could also pass through him without so much as a shiver, he’d given up.
Despair filled him as he realized Sylvia had achieved exactly what she’d promised. He was a stupid man. Maybe he could have loved her. Maybe…
God, what a witch.
No. It would never have worked. He’d have been damned either way. At least he’d saved soldiers’ lives, his own good men, with his decision at Chatham. He’d done the right thing, even if it had cost his life.
He surveyed the room as best he could from his prison.
Clearly he’d traveled from the grounds where he’d lingered for…decades? He wished he knew. Pent-up frustration filled him. Tanner could see energy emanating from something, just out of his reach. A glow—the signature of a living soul. An entity he hadn’t seen for a very long time. The aura, bright and strong, almost reached his prison cell, but not quite.
So close.
Something had sparked him to life. But what?
He startled when a face appeared before him. A non-human face. The face of some creature filled the mirrored prism of his cell.
What fresh hell was this?
The next thing he knew he was falling, falling, falling. The clatter when he landed nearly deafened him. His stomach roiled as if he’d leaped from a great height.
“Bitly. Stop it.”
A voice? A female voice?
Sylvia? Could she still be in possession of him?
Dear God.
“Bad kitty.”
His stomach lurched again as he was returned to his previous perch; the view was exactly the same, except the face that stared into his for the briefest moment was different. A woman’s face.
A woman most assuredly not Sylvia.
Relief flooded him. Of course Sylvia was long dead.
Of course.
And she wouldn’t have followed him into the afterlife. She’d never loved him that much. Not enough to spend eternity with him. Only enough to damn his soul for it.

Lisa Medley writes urban fantasy and paranormal romance about monsters in love, because monsters need love too. Look for Reap & Repent (Bk 1) and Reap & Redeem (Bk 2) of The Reaping Series, available now. A lover of beasties of all sorts, she has a farm full of them in her SW MO home including:  one child, one husband, two dogs, two cats, a dozen hens, thousands of Italian bees and a guinea pig. Not so in love with the guinea pig. She can do ten pushups IN A ROW and may or may not have a complete zombie apocalypse bug-out bag in her trunk at all times. Just. In. Case.

Read 'Em & Reap Blog Hop: The Reaper's Rite series

I've been invited to join the Read 'Em & Reap Blog Hop by author Lisa Medley. The blog hop takes a look at tons of cool reaper stories, just in time for Halloween. Take a look through the links and meet your next favorite scary book!

For my part of the hop, I'll be answering Lisa's questions about my books. I've also included an excerpt from MY SISTER'S REAPER to pique your interest, in case you haven't had a chance to give my books a look. Leave a comment telling me who your favorite supernatural creature is for your chance to win paperback copies of My Sister's Reaper and My Tethered Soul! There's also a rafflecopter you just can't miss out on!

Lisa: What first piqued your interest in writing about reapers?

Dorothy: All books need a bad guy, right? When I developed the concept of my protagonist, I had to make sure I picked a worthy antagonist. Zadie, in the Reaper's Rite series, is a Vila—half witch/half faery. She can make things happen, like magical willpower. I needed a creature or being that would match her power and challenge her. I figured a grim reaper would be a pretty challenging being.

Lisa: What makes your reaper different?

Dorothy: What sets my reapers apart from others lies within the Reaper's Rite—a contract made between a witch and a Reaper Lord centuries ago. Not only do the reapers in my books take the souls of deceased humans, but they also crave the souls of Vila. Vila have something special in their blood that makes them more appealing to my reapers.

Lisa: Are your reapers Heroes or Villains?

Dorothy: Big time villains, and creepy as heck!

Excerpt from MY SISTER'S REAPER, Book One in the Reaper's Rite series

I almost didn’t see her. The room was still, and I’d turned to head up the stairs. But something by the kitchen island caught my eye. Something that shouldn’t have been there. A shoe. Mara’s leg, sticking out from behind the counter. I circled the island to find out why she was sitting on the floor and came face to face with a large knife.

Mara was in a tank top, running the serrated blade in a slow line near her shoulder. The cut ran just along the surface of her skin, blood oozing from the broken skin and staining her top. I gasped, and Mara looked up at me with a tear-streaked face.

I dropped to my knees and grabbed her hand. “Mara!”

“I have to.” She pulled away, stronger than I thought. “He wants the pain.”

“Stop it! You don’t have to do this!”

She twisted away from me, her eyes wild as she dug the knife into her shoulder. This time deeper. Lines of red ran down her arm. I grabbed her wrist and used all my might to separate the knife from her skin. She screamed, her teeth bared like some kind of untamed animal. My eyes darted around the room, searching for unusually dark shadows.

I felt desperate, my voice pleading when I said, “Mara, I’m trying to help you.”

“I need more time!”

“Just let go of the knife!”

“You don’t know what he wants from me! You have no idea!”

Read 'Em & Reap Blog Hop! Tons of Grim Prizes!

All of this week Dorothy and I are participating in the Read 'Em & Reap Blog Hop! Why let witches, vamps, and ghosts hog all the Halloween fun? Grim Reapers need some love too! That's why author Lisa Medley put together this reapers only blog hop. So, if you like stories about Death Incarnate, hop around to all the different participating authors, play games, read interviews, and enter to win tons of reaper-esque books, plus a $100 dollar Amazon GIFT GARD! You can also enter to win a special prize from me (details below).

For those who are new to me and my book, here's a little tidbit about Call Me Grim!

"His icy eyes penetrate mine and a chill prickles over my arms, despite the early summer heat. I don't believe in ESP, or mind reading, or crap like that, but there's something deep in his eyes. He knows something. More than he should."

The truck should have turned Libbi Piper into a Libbi Pancake—and it would have, too, if Aaron hadn't shown up and saved her life. The problem? Aaron's the local Grim Reaper . . . and he only saved Libbi's life because he needs someone to take over his job. Now Libbi has two days to choose between dying like she was supposed to, or living a lonely life as Death Incarnate. Talk about a rock and a hard place.

In order to participate in this blog hop I must answer three questions, then I'd like to play a game with you all (there will be a PRIZE!). But first, the questions!

What first piqued your interest in writing about reapers?

There's something very intriguing about a creature whose sole purpose is to deal with death and the souls of the freshly dead. It seemed to me that watching people die, possibly in horrific ways, and not being able to do anything about it would be an awful existence. I am a Registered Nurse, so I guess it's not surprising that powerlessness in the face of death frightens the heck out of me.

That nugget of an idea festered in my brain. I decided that Death Incarnate would be a really crappy job and that whoever had it probably wouldn't want it for long. That's how Aaron, my reluctant Grim Reaper, was born.

What makes your reapers different?

In the world of Call Me Grim, there are many Reapers all over the world, but they are all alone, isolated in the territory they are required to reap. Reapers are invisible to the living (unless that person happens to be scheduled to die within twenty-four hours), so their only interactions with other living people are with the soon-to-be dead. So, yeah, pretty sucky, but that's the point.

Are your reapers Heroes or Villains?

The Reapers in Call Me Grim are 100% human. And every human (good or bad) is the hero of their own story.

And now, time for you to put on your WRITER HAT for a chance to win a PRIZE!

It's Halloween, so how about something spooky? In the comments, leave the creepiest, funniest, or most horrific ghost story you can squeeze into 300 words or less (real or fiction, but please, keep it clean). Leave your email in this format: email at server dot com, then spread the word about the giveaway. That's it! At the end of the Read 'Em & Reap Blog Hop (Oct 31st) I will choose a winner and post that entry on the blog, PLUS the winner will get a signed copy of Call Me Grim, a book mark, creepy candy, and a plastic skull (US entries ONLY, please)!

Also, don't forget to sign up for the Read 'Em & Reap blog-hop-wide Rafflecopter giveaway below!
