Review & Giveaway: The Silver Sickle by Ellie Ann

In a world oppressed by false gods who seem to see to the heart of one's every impulse, Ellie Ann constructs a brilliant cogwork puzzle of characters, technology, motives, and hope. I don't use the term cogwork lighty here. When I'm not reading you can probably find me tinkering with something steampunk. Yes, we have conventions. Yes, I attend them. So, when the opportunity to review a somewhat steampunk YA science fiction novel came across my desk, I was oddly enough, a little terrified. Nonetheless, my curiosity won out, and thank goodness, because the World Building made me want to squee like a fangirl. Ellie Ann's writing didn't take me by the hand and explain every detail of her created society to me, instead she sat me down in it and made it so rich and full that while it was different, and oh, was it ever different, there were enough details that I could quickly merge with the story and enjoy learning about the culture she'd created, rather than feeling thrown from the book with tired explanations.

It wasn't just her world building though. Her characters have depth, idiosyncrasies, and world views that are simultaneously easy to relate to, but entirely foreign. Within the first three chapters I was emotionally invested, not only in the fate of Farissa and Zel, as individuals but also as a pair, but also in Gira - in trying to better comprehend these alien would be gods who had set themselves above even the rulers of men - and also the cogsmen, whose unique position somewhere between man and machine both intrigued me and raised so many ethical and technical questions.

I like this book because it was exciting, and it gives the reader something to talk about. Any YA book clubs out there? Looking for good science fiction that will provide ample ammunition for long conversations about civic duty and personal responsibility, individual versus group ethics, imperialism, exploitation, agency, and cultural
oppression. I like this book because it raised my heart rate and kept me up far later than I wanted to be up, despite the fact that I had class the next day.

Best of all, I love that when I finished this book, it was over. It is a stand alone novel, and while I'd love to read more about the Amar, I am a big fan of stand alone novels. This is definitely a good book for readers who not only enjoy science fiction, but like their female main characters adventurous, quick witted, and big hearted, and their male main characters  to be made of the awkward but loyal and mechanically brilliant sort of stuff that other heroes only dreamed of while trying to fix the hinge on a door.

The Silver Sickle is available through Amazon and Barnes & Noble.

Synopsis:

The end of humanity will come through the Silver Sickle . . .

Farissa lives every moment with reckless abandon, for it may be her last. Any day now, the alien goddesses will harvest her and take her to the mysterious Silver Sickle, never to return. She’s accepted that. What she can’t accept is this new idea of freedom Zel has planted in her head. She’d give almost anything to be with Zel, but how can she run from her destiny if it means putting the whole kingdom in danger?

Everyone in the desert kingdom believes the goddesses are immortal, but Zel has invented a way to kill them. Now all he has to do is convince Farissa to run away with him and plant a seed of hope in her heart that she’s not destined to die. Little does he know that one seed of hope could change the course of the future.

Review: The Girl with the Iron Touch, by Kady Cross

Kady Cross' much awaited sequel to The Girl in the Clockwork Collar, The Girl with the Iron Touch brings the unapologeticly steampunk feel to a London adventure that spans from Mayfair to Whitechapel, and unearths new secrets in the London Underground. As a woman with a soft spot for the London Underground (have you seen the National Geographic article?), this book certainly touched on some of my favorite themes: Aether, SCOUSes, that's Sea Creatures of Unusual Size, in case you were wondering, Automotons, and philosophy.

The Girl with the Iron Touch revisits all of the story's past dealings in one way or another, Finley even remarks on parallels between the dilemma they are faced with and one she overcame on her own in The Strange Case of Finley Jane, which remains my favorite of the tales from Cross' The Steampunk Chronicles. That said, with the character of Endeavor 312, The Gril with the Iron Touch examines one of my favorite questions in speculative fiction: what does it mean to be human?

Enjoyable, as expected by any novel coming from the pen of Kady Cross, my one reservation is that Finley, Griff, Emily and Sam seem to be spending a little too much time letting their hormones get in the way of their better judgment, and the plot. Yes, the fact that this is a Harlequin TEEN novel means that I shouldn't be surprised, but I missed the slow build of the awkward tension which typified The Girl in the Steel Corset and The Girl in the Clockwork Collar.

Now, I'm going to go find a copy of The Dark Discovery of Jack Dandy, because somehow I didn't know this existed until a moment ago, and my logic engine tells me it is imperative that I read it.

Interview #2 with O. M. Grey

For those of you who don’t remember, We Do Write interviewed O. M. Grey when her book, AVALON REVISITED, was first released, back in 2010. Then, we celebrated when AVALON REVISITED was re-released in January of this year. And today, we are lucky to have Ms. Grey back for another interview!

Welcome back to We Do Write! Tell us about the re-release of AVALON REVISITED. How did this all come about?

Imagine my surprise when my agent, Louise Fury, called one day late last year and told me Riverdale Ave Books wanted to re-release Avalon Revisited! Louise has worked with Lori Perkins for several years, and they both adored the novel. We were all disappointed when several NY publishers said they loved it but ultimately couldn't publish it because of the unconventional male POV in a romance novel. Lori has breathed new life into Avalon Revisited, and I couldn't be more pleased.

I've had the most fabulous time working with the lovely folks at Riverdale Ave Books. Plus, they love my work. Since the re-release of Avalon Revisited, they've also released my short story "A Kiss in the Rain" on the Kindle and opened their WE LOVE NY anthology with my short story "For the Love of a Book."

"A Kiss in the Rain" is a Gothic Erotica Ghost Story from another era. Eliot, a professor and inventor, suffers unbearable grief over the loss of his dead wife. Though an expert in the new invention of electricity, it seems that even modern science cannot bring her back, but maybe there is a force even more powerful? My publisher, Lori Perkins, calls me the female Edgar Allen Poe, and I don't think there could be a higher compliment for someone who writes Gothic Horror.

That is quite a compliment! Your writing must really impress her. Remind us all what AVALON REVISITED is about.

Arthur Tudor has made his existence as a vampire bearable for over three hundred years by immersing himself in blood and debauchery. Aboard an airship gala, he meets Avalon, an aspiring vampire slayer who sparks fire into Arthur’s shriveled heart. Together they try to solve the mystery of several horrendous murders on the dark streets of London. Cultures clash and pressures rise in this sexy Steampunk Romance.

Sounds intriguing. I mean, who can resist a steampunk vampire/vampire-hunter romance? Very hot! And what an awesome cover!

What's your favorite thing about writing steampunk?

My favorite thing about writing Steampunk is, on one hand, anything goes! If you can imagine it, you can build it. From fantasy to romance to horror, the gadgetry and technology of Steampunk can create wondrous worlds. At the same time, the way I write Steampunk, you can choose to keep some historical parameters, giving your world a structure in reality. For me, it makes it all more believable. My characters are sometimes real historical figures, like Madame Jeffries, and the technology used within my novels actually existed 150 years ago.

In steampunk, it is ALL about those details. They really make the world of the story into a world you wish you could walk around in for a day.

Now that AVALON REVISITED has been out for a few months, what are you working on?

I've just finished the final draft of Avalon Revamped, a sequel, of sorts. I always throw the "of sorts" into the mix because although it takes place in the same world with many of the same characters, it is an altogether different book. Not the dark, cheeky romance of Avalon Revisited, Avalon Revamped is horror through and through. This is what happens AFTER the "happily ever after," when Prince Charming turns out to be a narcissist sociopath who not only fooled the princess, but also has complete control over her and her body. While Arthur as the anti-hero again, emphasis on ANTI, I introduce Constance, a succubus who punishes those who abuse and destroy women, as the anti-antagonist. A supernatural female Dexter in Steampunk London, as it were. The book is ruthless, and so is Constance. Any false character growth from the first book is washed away as Arthur reveals his true self: a sociopathic vampire who cares for nothing or no one besides his own selfish desires, forever looking for that fairy tale perfect love. A narcissist, bored with his existence and his relatively new lover. So horrified by the darkness within himself, he's always looking for the next distraction, the next warm body to fill. It will take the strength, love, and empathy of Avalon to save him from a most horrific fate at the hands of Constance, but after the way he treats Avalon, will she want him to be saved?

Very cool premise! I can’t wait to get my hands on it, and on AVALON REVISITED.

Author Update: O.M. Grey

The following is a press release about author OM Grey's novel AVALON REVISITED.

O.M. GREY’S VICTORIAN VAMPIRE NOVEL ‘AVALON REVISITED’ NOW AVAILABLE AS E- BOOK FROM RIVERDALE AVE BOOKS “A Delightful Combination of Historical Fiction, Romance and Steampunk.” – True-blood.net

RIVERDALE, NY – (January 17, 2013) – O.M. Grey’s best-selling Steampunk BDSM vampire novel, “Avalon Revisited” is now available from e-book publisher Riverdale Ave Books (RAB). The e-book is available for $5.99.

RAB president Lori Perkins said the book was brought to her by Grey’s agent, Louise Fury. “She came into the office breathless and told me she had found a masterpiece. I started to read it immediately and was hooked in the first chapter, so I read it straight through the night. I know our fans will love it as much as I did.”

“Avalon Revisited” follows the adventures of Arthur Tudor, who has made his existence as a vampire bearable for over 300 years by immersing himself in blood and debauchery. Aboard an airship gala, he meets Avalon, an aspiring vampire slayer who sparks fire into Arthur’s shriveled heart. Together they try to solve the mystery of several horrendous murders on the dark streets of London. Cultures clash and pressures rise in this very steamy tale.

Perkins points out that “As a bonus to new readers, RAB enticed Grey to include the first chapter of her next novel in the series, “Avalon Revamped,” in the e-book version.

An enthusiastic review of Avalon Revisited” from Bitten by Books was typical: “From its opening scene until the final page, this intriguing novel engages the reader’s interest...witty dialogue, historical authenticity and mystery result in a highly entertaining novel.” True-blood.net said of the Grey novel: “A delightful combination of historical fiction, romance and steampunk.” And Old Towne Books & Tea said: “Fans of Gail Carriger will LOVE ‘Avalon Revisited’...Pick it up-it’s a great read.!”

Interview with O M Grey

Is it really Wednesday? I'm all mixed up this week. Is it just me, or does a holiday weekend cause us all to go off kilter?

Well, let's try to get back on track by having a chat with a very cool steampunk author. Say hello to O. M. Grey.

Welcome to the site, Olivia. Tell us a bit about yourself.

I'm a very private person. I like to keep my personal life under wraps. I do love meeting fans at conventions and signings! I have really enjoyed connecting with fans online, and I love when they post pictures of themselves with my book on my Facebook page and/or tweet pictures they've taken with me.

Let's hear about Avalon Revisited. What's the story about?

Arthur has made his existence as a vampire bearable for over three hundred years by immersing himself in blood and debauchery.

Wow, sounds intense! And I love the book cover. How did the idea of the story come to you?

It's been brewing in my mind for about 20 years. I have always been drawn to the Arthurian Legend. The seeds for this story were planted back in college when I first heard the name Arthur Tudor, the older brother of Henry VIII. He was supposed to be king, but he died quite young. Their father, Henry VII, intended Arthur to be Arthur II of England, as he fully believed in the King Arthur of legend. So, between my love of English History and Vampires, I brought Arthur Tudor back to life as one of the undead.

I like it! Tell us, how do you feel writing Steampunk differs from writing other genres?

Steampunk is very hot right now. It's quite fun because the aesthetic itself is beautiful and the gadgets are only limited to one's imagination. It can be set on a different planet or an entirely different dimension or universe. It can also be set in just a slightly altered version of historical Victorian England or the Wild West in America. But the wonderful gadgets and polite conversation follow wherever it goes.

What’s the hardest part of writing for you?

Actually writing. Finding time to write. Keeping my muse in one place when I have the time to write. Once I'm in my writing zone; however, I can really make some great progress. Getting in that mode can sometimes take weeks, however.

I have to agree with you there. Who are your inspirations?

Gail Carriger. Leanna Renee Hieber. Kurt Vonnegut. Jules Verne. Mary Shelley.

Let’s get to know you on a deeper level. If you could have any super power, what would it be?

To leap onto the New York Times Bestseller List in a single bound.

Heehee, can I have that power too? Oh wait, first I need to get published.

Quick writing test! Use the following words in a sentence: underground, parakeet, and rug burn.

The determined albeit insane parakeet tried to dig underground through a carpet, but all he got was a rug burn on his beak.

Very clever! Poor parakeet, lol. Here’s the part where you thank the people who are supporting you. Whom would you like to give a shout out to?

I'd love to thank the wonderful artists who are supporting me by sponsoring my appearances. I've been gifted a gorgeous tiny top hat by GypsyLadyHats, a super cool Steampunk Corset by Lilly's Workshop, goggles by PH Factor, an absolutely beautiful tatted mask & choker set by TotusMel Tats, and some really great Mad Scientist spectacles from Clockwork Couture. You can see pictures of me in a few of these things on my Facebook page at Apollocon.

These things amaze me. I've checked out the fabulous items on your website; they are awesome and incredible! Let's tell everyone where can people find you online.
