AUTHOR INTERVIEW

Hi, Leigh! Welcome to We Do Write. Tell us a bit about yourself.
Thanks so much for having me!
My name is Leigh Hutton, I'm a former Courier-Mail journalist, dirt bike racer and horse show jumper. I was born in Canada and live on rural property in southeast Queensland, Australia, with my husband and three young children. When I'm not writing, managing the relocation and restoration of historic 'Queenslander' homes, wrangling the kids or swilling coffee, I love to read, watch smart TV and movies, ride my motorbike and daydream about gorgeous horses. My family spells racehorses at our property and making friends with each one is also a favourite pastime of the children and I. I'm also especially passionate about promoting the growing number of girls and women in all action and equestrian sports, and I'm thrilled to be drawing on my experiences to bring you the exciting novels of The Go Girls Chronicles . . .
Tell our readers a bit about RACE GIRL. What’s the story about?
Tully Athens has always dreamed of following in the footsteps of her hero Michelle Payne. Of living up to the Athens name and becoming the third generation of women from her family to rule the track. But Tully's never been sure she's got the nerve, and when her mother is killed in a horse racing accident, her whole world is shattered. Six months later, in the heat of a Queensland summer, sixteen-year-old Tully is ready to face her fears. But getting back in the saddle leads to a whole lot more than she bargained for, with an out of control crush on the boy from their rival thoroughbred farm - the gorgeous but cocky larrikin Brandon Weston - and a forgotten filly with stardom in her eyes ...

How did the idea of the story come to you?
The book was inspired by the incredible female jockeys risking their lives every day for the horses and the sport they love. Also the beautiful valley we live in near Dayboro, Queensland (Australia) and the gorgeous thoroughbred farms near Beaudesert - we pass them often when travelling down to northern NSW and I've always wanted to set a story there.
Are you a plotter or a pantser?
Plotter all the way.
What’s the hardest part of writing for you?
Making the time!
What do you absolutely have to have nearby when writing?
A device connected to the internet. For research of course *lol*
If you could have any super power, what would it be?
Supreme foresight.
What's the weirdest thing you've googled?
OMG . . .
Probably what a concussion feels like (research for Race Girl)
Finish this sentence: If I'm not writing, I'm probably ...
Hanging with our kids and my hubby, or digging through a demolition yard searching for bits and pieces for the old Queenslander homes we renovate.
Here’s the part where you thank the people who are supporting you. Let's hear your shout outs.
My awesome family.
Thanks so much for stopping by the blog!
Thanks so much for having me!! xx

Review and Giveaway: Phantom's Dance by Lesa Howard

When I was about Christine Dadey's age, I fell in love with an Andrew Lloyd Weber musical about a talented young singer and the talented stalker who fixated on her. Then I found a film adaptation that was far more beautiful than even the musical, that moved me to tears and sold the humanity of the Phantom so strongly that ultimately, it was sad that Christine's character couldn't ever truly choose him. Many adaptations and a gleeful reading of a good translation of the original later, there is Phantom's Dance, by Lesa Howard- a modern re-imagining of the classic tale of The Phantom of the Opera, wherein our aspiring star is not just a dancer in the ballet company, but in fact, a dancer studying ballet with no designs on becoming a musician. Completely modernized and technologically relevant, Phantom's Dance was a complicated piece for me.
First and foremost, I liked it, but... there is no way to adapt this story without a but, is there? Ultimately, the heart of the Phantom's tale is always going to be that a cunning, psychologically abusive, and ultimately violent older man takes advantage of a young and overly trusting girl in downright criminal ways, and she invariably fails to properly involve authorities. When it's a story taking place before the advent of electrical lighting, it is easy to accept Christine's choices, but in 2014, it is harder.

Phantom's Dance deals with a wide swath of social issues- infidelity, contraception and the threat of teen pregnancy, and edges up on discussion about eating disorders while blatantly addressing racism, classism, and rape. It's a fast moving book with a driving rhythm that pushes the reader along, right into uncomfortable territory. Uncomfortable is good. It makes a reader think.

Synopsis
Christine Dadey’s family uprooted their lives and moved to Houston for her to attend the prestigious Rousseau Academy of Dance. Now, two years later, Christine struggles to compete among the Academy’s finest dancers, her parents are on the brink of divorce, and she’s told no one about her debilitating performance anxiety and what she’s willing to do to cope with it.
Erik was a ballet prodigy, a savant, destined to be a star on the world’s stage, but a suspicious fire left Erik’s face horribly disfigured. Now, a lonely phantom forced to keep his scars hidden, he spends his nights haunting the theater halls, mourning all he’s lost. Then, from behind the curtain he sees the lovely Christine. The moldable, malleable Christine.

Drawn in by Erik’s unwavering confidence, Christine allows herself to believe Erik’s declarations that he can transform her into the dancer she longs to be. But Christine’s hope of achieving her dreams may be her undoing when she learns Erik is not everything he claims. And before long, Erik’s shadowy past jeopardizes Christine’s unstable present as his obsession with her becomes hopelessly entangled with his plans for revenge.

 AUTHOR BIO
I'm not the typical author. I didn't always enjoy reading or writing. While in school, I found it to be a chore I'd just as soon skip. I would rather have been daydreaming, my favorite past time. It wasn’t until I grew up and didn’t have to, that I realized reading was fun. I soon discovered that reading fueled my daydreaming. So, remembering a short story I'd written in high school, I began imagining expanding that story into a book. Before long I found I had loads of ideas for not just the short story but other books and stories as well. Fast forward a few years, a lot of studying about writing, practicing my writing, studying some more, taking classes from people who knew what they were doing, studying and practicing yet more, and ta-dah, author! In the same way I had learned I loved reading, I learned I loved writing, too. It’s just that writing is a lot harder than reading.

Interview with Dana Mason

Today we're chatting with author Dana Mason about her book DANGEROUS EMBRACE.

Welcome, Dana. Tell us a bit about yourself.

Hi Dorothy, and thank you for inviting me to your blog. As a new author, the idea of doing interviews is a little intimidating, but I’ll do my best to keep it interesting. My personal tag line is “Mother-Writer-Person in training.” I guess you could say, expert at nothing, experienced at everything.
Let’s start with the mother side of me. I have two beautiful daughters and a beautiful little boy who isn’t so little anymore. They keep me grounded and remind me regularly that there is more to life than work.

Writer: I’m a debut author who still has a lot to learn, but I learn something new every day. Today I learned that it’s harder to talk about yourself than you might think.

Person: Like I said, I’m an expert at nothing but experienced at . . . well I’ve done a lot and seen a lot, yet life still manages to surprise me regularly. I’m a planner who tends to toss the plan out of the window and fly by the seat of my pants.

I spend my days at a large University managing a small continuing education department. I spend my nights between laughing at the dinner table with my family and at my laptop, running wild with my favorite fictional people. I’m also on the board for the local Art’s Council. That’s been an interesting experience, talk about a variety of different people. Maybe I’ll write a book about it one day.

You lead a busy life. How long have you been writing?

I started writing seriously about three years ago. I’ve always been an avid reader but never really put pen to paper until the two main characters for my novel popped into my head. I spent the next few months mulling over the two of them until the story idea eventually came to me in a morning news story.

Tell us about DANGEROUS EMBRACE. What's the story about?

Dangerous Embrace is about second chances and not taking life or people for granted. The story begins with Sarah getting attacked when leaving work one evening. She escapes the attacker and runs away . . . directly into Mark. Needless to say, Mark is happy she got away, but a little disappointed he didn’t get to nab the guy that attacked her.

Here’s a synopsis:

Sarah Jennings wants nothing more than a quiet life—alone.

Raised by an eccentric mother, their life on the road only taught her how to run away from hard times. But when she finds herself in an abusive relationship, this lesson serves her well.

Now, back in her hometown, she's found a place she loves. She’s a first grade teacher, and with few friends and less family around, she has what she wants, a quiet life under the radar where she can be free of her past and live quietly. Finally comfortable in her own skin, she’s settled, and less fearful than she’s ever been in her life.

But it only took one night and one act of violence for everything to change. Injured and afraid, Sarah wants to run again, but Mark Summors refuses to let her go.

Just when Sarah thinks she can have Mark and the life he promises, her past comes back to haunt her.

***

Mark Summors was born and raised in Santa Rosa. He married his high school sweetheart and never questioned his life, until he found his wife with another man.

Now divorced, he wants something more. He’s passionate about his job, he wants to protect people, and he devotes his life to it.

This time he’s protecting more than just another client, he’s protecting his future; at least, Sarah Jennings will be his future, when he convinces her she loves him.

How did the idea of the story come to you?

I already had character outlines, I just needed a hook and little help with the plot. I was drinking my coffee, watching the morning news and there is was, ‘woman fights off attacker after being thrown into the bushes and assaulted’. Aha! I immediately grabbed my notebook and started taking notes. What’s better than a woman fighting off an attacker and ultimately getting the best of him? It was the perfect story to fit my characters. I loved it right away. Sarah is strong and she’s a fighter, refusing to let a man take from her again. She needed to save herself. Of course I let Mark do a little saving in the story too, but I wanted Sarah to be a strong woman, yet vulnerable enough to need Mark’s help. The plot blossomed from there.

Are you a planner or a pantser?

A little of both. When it comes to characters, I’m a planner. I spend weeks working on characters, getting everything right, from the way they look to their favorite catch phrases. When it comes to plot, I’m a pantser. I just need a vague idea and I can go from there. As long as I have a solid character to work with, I can write for days without ever looking up from the laptop. They take over the story, and if I try to harness that or control it, my creativity is smothered. I’ve tried to outline and I’ve tried to make lists, charts, you name it and I’ve tried it. They don’t work for me.

What’s the hardest part of writing for you?

Time. There isn’t enough hours in the day. I have a full time day job with an 80 mile roundtrip commute and three kids. Writing time is limited. Fortunately I have a very considerate family and a very helpful husband. He does all the laundry. ☺ Yes, I’m bragging. My teenage girls also do a lot of the house work. It’s difficult to juggle writing and family, but I love both so I manage.

I hear ya. What do you absolutely have to have nearby when writing?

Music. I must have music to concentrate. I know it’s odd, but true. Not loud music, I keep the volume down, but I need to have it on. A dictionary is always within reach as well as a book called ‘100 Words for Lovers’ by American Heritage Dictionaries. I also have a little alabaster owl that sits on my desk, I’ve named him Piccolo. He makes me smile.

How cute! If you could have any super power, what would it be?

Super human strength. One of my pet peeves in not being able to open a jar or lift a box. If I have to ask my husband to open a jar, it’s usually after I’ve tried for 10 minutes and I’m near tears. Which makes him laugh and makes me angrier, but I have to ask the question, what if he wasn’t here. I don’t like asking for help, my own weakness bothers me. I wouldn’t mind being able to fly either, since I’m short and always need him to reach things for me.

What's the weirdest thing you've googled?

Ahh, hum . . . good question. Let’s just say, I’m surprised the FBI hasn’t shown up on my doorstep yet. Okay, serious answer. This week I googled ‘how to fire your hair stylist’. I’ve googled a lot about missing kids, kidnapping, rape, and abandoned babies. Also current laws regarding rape convictions and punishments. All for my current novel or other works in progress.

Quick writing test! Use the following words in a sentence: depository, dishwasher, and embargo.

I put an embargo on the depository of dirty dishes because this dishwasher is on vacation.

Here’s the part where you thank the people who are supporting you. Let's hear your shout outs.

Oh where to start…?
Amy and Katie at Sapphire Star Publishing have made my dreams come true. They really are the greatest. I hate to gush, and I know that all the Sapphire Star authors praise them a lot too, but it’s all true. They’re patient, caring, thoughtful, and they’re always available. Most important, they listen.

I’d also like to thank my family for sharing me with my characters. They are more understanding than they have to be, and I love them for it. My extended family have been very supportive too, Facebooking and Tweeting news about my book. It’s been heartwarming to see them all come together for me and my romance novel.

I’d like the thank you, Dorothy, for inviting me to be here today. Also the writing community in general, writers are truly generous. It’s been a great surprise to see everyone so supportive and helpful.

Interview with AL Jackson

Today we're talking with author AL Jackson about two of her novels: PULLED and TAKE THIS REGRET.

Welcome to We Do Write! Tell us a bit about yourself.

Hi everyone! I'm A. L. Jackson, author of Pulled and Take This Regret. I live in Southern Arizona with my amazing husband and three kids. I'm also the co-owner of a small publishing house, Sapphire Star Publishing.

How long have you been writing?

I really found a love for writing when I was in college. I was a young mother, and I spent a lot of time between classes jotting my thoughts in the journals I carried. I wrote a lot about love and life and the difficulties I faced.  At that time, my writing looked a whole lot more like poetry than stories. As life went on and I got married, had a full-time job, and added two more children to my family, writing became something that I just didn't do anymore.  But I missed it.  About five years ago I had a story that had been rolling around in my head, and I finally sat down and began putting it to paper. It later became my first published novel, PULLED.

Tell us about PULLED. I love the cover. What's the story about?

PULLED is a contemporary romance that has a bit of a supernatural twist. I've always believed in fate, and I wanted to explore the idea of an unseen "hand" leading us where we were supposed to be.

Melanie and Daniel shared a love most only dream of, a love they believed bonded them together for life.  When their world is shattered by an unexpected tradegy, overwhelming grief and misguided guilt distorts the truth, and their relationship ends in uncertainty and unanswered questions.

For nine years, they drift through life, each unable to forget the one who holds the strings to their heart.  In an attempt to escape the pain of her past, Melanie finds herself trapped in a loveless marriage, while Daniel loses himself in a career that means nothing without Melanie by his side.

Now, when their lives again intersect, neither can deny the connection they felt so long ago.

But will the power that drew them together be enough to heal the wounds from their past, and will they have the courage to overcome the insecurities and fears that threaten to keep them apart?

Pulled is a story of attraction and separation, of destiny and duty, of a love so strong it refuses to give up even when all others have.

How did the idea of the story come to you?

The ending scene of PULLED just came to me one day.  I could clearly see the happily ever after and had a vague image of the characters and their circumstances.  For several weeks that scene was there and ideas kept coming on how their lives had led up to that moment.  It was when everything clicked into place that I finally sat down and began writing again.

What is TAKE THIS REGRET about, and what inspired you for this story?

TAKE THIS REGRET is more of a mainstream contemporary romance, although in all of my books, my characters have a "higher connection".

There are some mistakes we make that we will regret for the rest of our lives.  For Christian, it was the day he betrayed Elizabeth.

Christian Davison has a plan for his life.  He is determined to become an attorney and to one day take his place as partner in his father’s law firm.  Nothing will stand in his way, not even Elizabeth Ayers and their unborn child.

After Christian cuts her from his life, Elizabeth spends the next five years struggling to provide for her daughter and willing to sacrifice anything to give her child a safe, comfortable life.

For five years, Christian has regretted the day he walked away from his family and will do anything to win them back just as Elizabeth will do anything to protect her daughter from the certain heartache she believes Christian will bring upon them.

When Christian wrestles his way into their lives, Elizabeth is faced with asking herself if it is possible to forgive someone when they’ve committed the unforgiveable and if it is possible to find a love after it has been buried in years of hate.  Or are there some wounds that go so deep they can never heal?

They say everyone deserves a second chance.

Are you a planner or a pantser?

I'm definitely a planner.  I write out an entire outline for my books before I start, chapter by chapter.  I do leave myself open to changes as I get to know my characters better and different ideas come to mind, but I usually know exactly where my story begins and where it ends.

What’s the hardest part of writing for you?

I'm a slow writer, so I often will get frustrated when I've written an entire day and have only put down 500 or 1000 words.  In the end, I find it's worth it because I don't have to typically do as much editing since so much time and thought has already been devoted to each section.

What do you absolutely have to have nearby when writing?

A notebook and pen.  I tend to scribble my thoughts down and then switch to typing .  I'll often have half-written sentences in my notepad that help to get my ideas flowing, and then I can begin typing again.

If you could have any super power, what would it be?

I think I'd like to fly.  Practical and I'm scared of planes ;)

What's the weirdest thing you've googled?

Haha...I'm not going to answer that ;)

Quick writing test! Use the following words in a sentence: razor blades, daisies, and intervals.

The smell of daisies seeped into her senses, the candle flickering as water lapped at her skin as she dragged the razor blade up her legs at precise intervals.

LOL, so all I got was bath or suicide...had to go with bath.

LOL, good choice. Here’s the part where you thank the people who are supporting you. Let's hear your shout outs.

First off I have to thank all of my family at Sapphire Star Publishing. My author family is just amazing and my office is filled with some of my most favorite people in the world. It's truly a blessing.  I also want to say thank you to the incredibly supportive book bloggers and book lovers who have reviewed my books.

And finally, where can people find you online?

I just want to say thank you to Dorothy for asking me to share with you all!

You're welcome! Good luck with your books!

Interview with Mandy Baggot

Happy Monday, everyone. Hope you've been enjoying your summer and withstanding the heat. Let's start the week off on a good foot by indulging in an interview with author Mandy Baggot.

Welcome, Mandy! Tell us a bit about yourself.

I am a married mum of two wonderful daughters and a full-time author. I have published four novels with the assistance of Feed A Read and the Arts Council of England (Excess All Areas, Breaking the Ice, Knowing Me Knowing You and Strings Attached) but in January 2012 I signed with US publishers Sapphire Star Publishing for my latest novel Taking Charge. Following that I became a full member of the Romantic Novelists Association.

I write strong contemporary romance and characters you’ll fall in love with.

How long have you been writing?

I’ve been writing since my school days. I always had a keen interest in creating stories and scripts and used to write tales involving my friends and the latest hot pin-ups of the time. Life did get in the way of my writing for a while but after the birth of my first daughter I put pen to paper again and haven’t looked back.

Tell us about TAKING CHARGE. What's the story about?

Taking Charge is Robyn and Cole’s story. Robyn travels back to the US from the UK when her father falls ill. On the plane she meets a hot guy (Cole) and embarks on a journey that involves her running a roadhouse, managing an ice hockey team, dealing with her past and trying to fall in love. It’s a story of love and relationships and how these mould us as people. There’s also a lot of humour in there too!

How did the idea of the story come to you?
My dad lives in Michigan, where Taking Charge is set, and I went to stay with him back in 2010. I think I was there all of a couple of days when the idea for Taking Charge started to form. Once I’d been to see the ice hockey almost everything fell into place! I hope I did the town and the community spirit of the town justice in the novel.

Are you a planner or a pantser?

Pantser! The only plan I have is the beginning and the end. I have my characters, I know where they’re going to end up but how they get there is 99.9% up to them. I just keeping writing and take my direction from them. I recently heard of another writer who not only plans what is going to happen in each chapter but writes that all down, along with who else is going to be in scene etc. I couldn’t imagine doing that, for me that would take the whole element of surprise out of it and my characters do surprise me! They’re the ones in charge, not me!

What’s the hardest part of writing for you?

Never having enough time to actually write as much as I want to write. I am lucky to be able to write full time but there are still not enough hours in the day to actually dedicate to creating something new. As soon as I get into it it’s time to collect the children or perhaps I have a meeting, the day just isn’t long enough.

I totally agree. *sigh* What do you absolutely have to have nearby when writing?

A cup of tea and a glass of water. Once I get into my writing hours can go by and I haven’t moved, or drunk any fluids or anything so I need to have fluids near by to stop me dehydrating! I have to remember to look up and see they are there though!

If you could have any super power, what would it be?
To make time stand still (see above!) or to control the bestsellers chart on Amazon – that would be fun to play with!

LOL, that would be fun. What's the weirdest thing you've googled?

Are artichokes good for you! That’s one I can remember and I also googled ‘does Pitbull have a girlfriend?’. I don’t know why I needed to know but I did and I didn’t really find out. Does anyone know? I google lots of random things!

Quick writing test! Use the following words in a sentence: life support, mediocre, and flabbergasted.

She was flabbergasted that the life support worked, given the worse than mediocre quality of the hospital food.

Here’s the part where you thank the people who are supporting you. Let's hear your shout outs.

I would like to thank everyone at Sapphire Star Publishing for all their help and constant support. I would also like to thank all my fellow authors and associate readers at Loveahappyending.com especially Team Baggot. And last but by no means least I want to thank everyone who buys and reads my books – if you didn’t love them I wouldn’t be writing them and I am so grateful.
