Happy Book Birthday: Insanity by Susan Vaught

A young adult novel set in a mental institution? Spooky! Today we celebrate the release of Susan Vaught's INSANITY, published by Bloomsbury. Check it out!

Never, Kentucky is not your average scenic small town. It is a crossways, a place where the dead and the living can find no peace. Not that Forest, an 18-year-old foster kid who works the graveyard shift at Lincoln Hospital, knew this when she applied for the job. Lincoln is a huge state mental institution, a good place for Forest to make some money to pay for college. But along with hundreds of very unstable patients, it also has underground tunnels, bell towers that ring unexpectedly, and a closet that holds more than just donated clothing....When the dead husband of one of Forest's patients makes an appearance late one night, seemingly accompanied by an agent of the Devil, Forest loses all sense of reality and all sense of time. Terrified, she knows she has a part to play, and when she does so, she finds a heritage that she never expected.

With her deep knowledge of mental illness and mental institutions, Susan Vaught brings readers a fascinating and completely creepy new book intertwining the stories of three young people who find themselves haunted beyond imagining in the depths of Lincoln Hospital.

EXCERPT

He laughed to himself. "You're always my strongest supporter, Kennedy, and therein lies the problem. That blind loyalty could get you…" He closed his eyes and seemed to swallow back the words, or one in particular. "Could get you killed."

"What are you saying?"

"Kennedy," he exhaled patiently but with a great deal of effort, "I'm not sure how much venom my body can take, what the effects of it have been on me, or even how it is merging with the antibodies. Every time I'm bitten I put you in danger, everyone who is near me is in danger." He exhaled in frustration. "Why do you think I wait for sixty seconds after I'm bitten to come near you?"

That had never occurred to me, but he was right. I remembered seeing him move away from me after an attack; he'd gone so far as to put a muzzle to his head. I'd even caught him positioning himself within range of Doc, Mei, and Beverly.

"Wait…," I mumbled, an understanding of something forming in the recesses of my mind. "Wait a second…"
Then it hit me. He had been training them to defend against the Infected's strengths…the same traits that he possessed. He had trained them to detect weaknesses, the same weaknesses he possessed.

"Wait…" I said again, bile rising in my throat.

He had done this in front of me, with my help, and I hadn't even realized what he had been doing.

"You…," I whispered. Clearing my throat, I tried again. "You…"

He was watching me now, waiting for me to wedge free the statement that was so rigidly stuck in my throat. "I…?" he said coaxingly. "I what, Kennedy?"

What began the fire of infuriation in the pit of my belly was that he knew. He knew what he'd done and he knew I'd figure it out sooner or later. This was that moment.

The memories flooded back to me then. The shift in his positions around the group after he'd been bitten, the line of sight he'd  maintained with someone, anyone but me on our team to take him out if it was needed.

"You trained them to kill you," I uttered.

Interview with Pete Prown

How are we feeling today? The days seem to be staying brighter longer, so that's got to be a good thing, right? Right! Today on the blog, we're chating with Pete Prown, author of Thimble Down. Let's get to know him and his book.

Welcome to We Do Write, Pete! Tell us a bit about yourself.

I’ve been a journalist and editor for over 25 years, specializing in guitars and horticulture, as well as other subjects. I’ve also written some non-fiction books on the guitar.

How long have you been writing?

Since 1985, when I started writing Legends of Rock Guitar—a non-fiction reference book published a dozen years later.

Interesting! Tell us about THIMBLE DOWN. What’s the story about?

Essentially, it’s a mystery set in the Halfling village of Thimble Down and answers the question: “What if Agatha Christie wrote The Hobbit?” One of the no-good Halflings comes across a rare gem and parades it around town … until it gets stolen. It’s up to the bookmaster, Mr. Dorro, and his friends to find it before murder comes to the village.

Well, that's different. How did the idea of the story come to you?

I like English mysteries and vintage fantasy. I merely combined them into something new, and it’s working out quite well. I just started the fourth book in the series today.

Do you have a critique group/partner or beta readers, or do you self-edit?

I self-edit, but I’m pretty ruthless about it. If something isn’t good enough, it gets cut.

Are you a plotter or a pantser?

Both. I write based an outline, but that document can—and should—evolve as I write. Once I have a few chapters for an outline started, I’ll start writing the manuscript. After that, the outline and book grow at the same time. The more spontaneous I am, the better the story. I strongly believe that a story should end up in a far different place than you intended it to.

What’s the hardest part of writing for you?

Actually, writing is easy. Once I get going each day, it picks up speed all its own and the chapters spill out. Now, picking a good title is hard and, of course, selling and marketing the hardest of all.

What do you absolutely have to have nearby when writing?

All I need is my laptop. I can write anywhere—indoors, outdoors, on trains, in libraries. But I do like to have a Diet Snapple handy.

What are you reading right now?

I’m re-reading The Wind in the Willows—perhaps my favorite book ever. And I recently finished Enigma by Robert Harris.
If you could have any super power, what would it be?

Invisibility, of course. It’s a no-brainer.

What's the weirdest thing you've googled?

I google constantly, as I’m always following up on trivia, facts and history. Was recently looking up information about the Magna Carta and frontiersman Kit Carson.

Quick writing test! Use the following words in a sentence: thimble, gravitate, and lethargic.

“Even when I’m lethargic, I gravitate towards reading Thimble Down.”

Finish this sentence: If I'm not writing, I'm probably ...

… on Facebook. I run a popular guitar page called “Legends of Rock Guitar.”

Cool. Here’s the part where you thank the people who are supporting you. Let's hear your shout outs.

My wife, kids, and friends—the people who keep me sane.

And finally, where can people find you and your books online?

EXCERPT

“Right.” Automatically, I turned to go right, my usual default.

Don’t use your brain, K. Cast out your senses and search for your father that way. Logic won’t find him.

“You have a point.” Mortal folklore and beliefs had gotten us this far, but from here on out, I’d need to use my gut. Closing my eyes, I focused on the hallway where I stood, reaching out. My mind crept like a thief, snaking into each open space. Yet no one was there. Otherwise, I would have sensed something. Changing tactics, I shifted my attention to the corridor on my left. Immediately, I received an emotion back—complete and utter happiness—a sensation of fulfillment that went   far beyond what most people experience. Soundlessly, I moved down the hallway, drawn toward the sensation of contentment.

What is it?

Someone’s happy, I answered with my mind, not wanting to speak the words out loud and give myself away. I could sense the close proximity of the feelings I’d picked up on.

Be careful. It could be a trap.

But as I wandered forward, I got the feeling it wasn’t. I needed to walk this corridor. I’d been waiting my entire life for it. The closer I came to the happiness, filling up the place like a cloud, the more I considered never leaving, staying in this place forever. What could the outside world possibly have to offer? What? Wait a minute. What was that I’d been thinking? Cali was waiting for me. I had to get back to Cali. I pushed forward.

“Willock, is that you?”

I froze. That voice. It was my father’s voice,   not the evil tone I’d become used to over the years with the fake Stephen. Instead, this voice sounded pleasant, welcoming. I had just reached the doorframe when I paused. I had two more steps to take, and I would see my father.

Guest Post: The Magic Vagina, by Tellulah Darling

My youngest turns thirteen today! I can hardly believe it. He is officially a teenager and I am officially old. So, it's a good thing you have a hilarious guest post by Tellulah Darling to read, because I'm feeling a little sappy this morning. And trust me, you don't want to read what I write when I feel sappy.

The Magic Vagina
by Tellulah Darling

The magic vagina – what happened to the rest of the person?

Don’t you just looooove storytelling that reduces entire races down to a single characteristic instead of bothering to make them fully realized human beings? Why helloooo, Wise Asian. Thank you, Magical Black Person. Stay back, Scary Arab Guy.  And now, I am so happy to learn that we women have our own reductive trait sweeping books these days.  Ladies and gentlemen, I present to you, the magic vagina.

I just learned of this term from a friend of mine. See, I was ranting about a book in which, maybe 2 chapters in, the female protagonist had two guys in love with her and we hadn’t even met the third main one. Whose reality is this? Now, if she was a paragon of brains, wit, compassion, okay, maybe I could have sort of understood it. But the thing is, I didn’t have any sense of her personality at all. She was female. I might have been given a description, which I fail to recall, but even though the book was written in first person, I couldn’t flesh her out.  Which is where my friend explained about the magic vagina. And really, I can think of no other explanation for this character’s appeal.

Thing is, it sounds so friendly, doesn’t it? Make a wish on the magic vagina. Or maybe like a magic carpet. Hey, wanna take a ride on a magic vagina? Okay, maybe not.  I know it’s hard to bring characters to life. And yes, we absolutely draw on archetypes. Mentor figure? Use it all the time. But I hope that my mentor characters have more going for them then some kind of exotic otherness that for some reason automatically confers wisdom or some kind of higher spirituality on them.

I write female characters in romantic comedy novels. Talk about a genre with the potential for stock characters. Klutzy girl in Manolo’s anyone? My characters are teens and I think about this age group a lot and what kinds of fictional girls I want to be putting into the world since I know my daughter will be reading them at some point.

I want my characters to be strong, I want them to be funny, I want them to be smart, I want them to be flawed, and I want them by the end of their journey to have the kind of empowerment and pride in themselves that will catapult them into being fabulous women.  So that’s what I try and achieve. Without the use of the M.V.

That said, I’m thinking this magic vagina thing has potential as a series:  Magic vagina: Monte Carlo Nights  Magic Vagina: Grifter on the run  Magic Vagina: Home for the holidays  Publishers? Hollywood? Feel free to drive up that money truck.  Kidding …

My Date From Hell (The Blooming Goddess Trilogy #2)
by Tellulah Darling
Release Date: 10/31/13

Sophie Bloom’s junior year has been a bit of a train wreck. After the world’s greatest kiss re-awakened Sophie’s true identity as Persephone (Goddess of Spring and Savior of Humanity), she fought her dragon-lady guidance counselor to the death, navigated mean girl Bethany’s bitchy troublemaking, and dealt with the betrayal of her backstabbing ex, Kai (sexy Prince of Darkness). You’d think a girl could catch a break.

Yeah, right.

With Zeus stepping things up, it’s vital that Sophie retrieve Persephone’s memories and discover the location of the ritual to stop Zeus and Hades. So when Aphrodite strikes a deal that can unlock Sophie’s pre-mortal past, what choice does the teen goddess have but to accept?

The mission: stop media mogul Hermes from turning Bethany into a global mega-celebrity. The catch? Aphrodite partners Sophie and Kai to work together … and treat this
suicide mission as a date. Which could work out for Sophie’s plan to force Kai to admit his feelings for her–if she doesn’t kill him first.

Add to that the fact that BFF Theo’s love life and other BFF Hannah’s actual life are in Sophie’s hands, and suddenly being a teenager—even a godlike one—seems a bit like … well, hell. Whatever happened to dinner and a movie?

The YA romantic comedy/Greek mythology fireworks continue to fly inMy Date From Hell. Love meets comedy with a whole lot of sass in book two of this teen fantasy romance series. Breaking up is easy; dating is deadly.
