Lightning Kissed is a story that’s been brewing in my mind for some time. Whenever someone would ask me the question about what superpower I would like to have, I have always answered, ‘Teleporting’. So, this is my tribute to that wish.

How did the idea of the story come to you?

I had a dream about the characters asking me to travel with them.

Are you a plotter or a pantser?

I’m a mix of both! For my paranormal romances, I always plot. For my contemporaries, I rarely plot, but I know the main story and how it ends. The rest is pure pantsing.

What’s the hardest part of writing for you?

Having to stop to eat and sleep—trivial things.

What do you absolutely have to have nearby when writing?

I’ve gotten to the point where I don’t have to have anything around me to write. I’ve written in my car with just a pen and paper. I’ve written in a hospital room with a laptop. I’ve written in my bed on my iPad. If there’s some kind of writing utensil around, I can write.

Tell us why teleporting would be the super power you would choose.

Seriously, travelling the world without the cost and hassle of airplanes and trains? No contest.

What's the weirdest thing you've googled?

Oh boy…I’ve Googled some weird stuff. For Lightning Kissed, it was a pleasure to google all the places around the world that they visited.

Review: Fairy, Texas by Margo Bond Collins

I'm entirely confused about the cover,
having read the book and all,
but it looks nifty.

If every I've come to you with mixed feelings, it's today. Well, and that time I reviewed the book about the modern retelling of the Phantom of the Opera in a dance school environment. Incidentally, Im torn for some of the same reasons.

To start with, here's a quick run down on what Fairy, TX is about.
Laney Harris thinks there might be monsters in Fairy, Texas.

She's right.

When her mother remarried and moved them to a town where a date meant hanging out at the Sonic, Laney figured that "boring" would have a whole new meaning. A new stepsister who despised her and a high school where she was the only topic of gossip were bad enough. But when she met the school counselor (and his terminal bad breath), she grew suspicious. Especially since he had wings that only she could see. And then there were Josh and Mason, two gorgeous glimmering-eyed classmates whose interest in her might not be for the reasons she hoped. Not to mention that dead guy she nearly tripped over in gym class.

Boring takes on an entirely new dimension in Fairy, Texas.

If she's going to survive in this small town, she'll have to learn to wing it.

Got it? What could possibly simultaneously give me pause and endear this title?

Well, let's start with endear. Many moons ago, I relocated from a relatively urban setting to a minuscule town in Texas, and it might as well have been Fairy. It was tiny. Rumours bloomed out of the bluebonnets and were carried along on the wind. You only had to walk into a new business and suddenly everyone would tell you who you were, where you came from, and whose house you'd moved into. Note, as a transplant, it was never going to be your house. It would forever be "Lola Jenkins' house." After all, it's not like transplants thrived there.

So when I first delved into Fairy, Texas, I was immediately taken by how well Margo Bond Collins captures the experience of an urban girl moving to the middle of Nowhere, just twenty miles out of Never Gonna Be Nowhere. It was familiar and difficult, and not overplayed.

The main character, Laney, manages to have enough snark that she seems like her own person, but just enough blandness that it's easy to identify with her. That said, she does fall back on some of my least favorite women in literature flaws- she follows the lead of the men guiding her, even when she's bucking their authority on the surface and questioning the rationality of their suggestions, there she is, doing as they asked and letting the plot happen to her. I admit, I like a girl who saves herself earlier than later.

Laney has a strong voice through the story, which is written from a perspective I haven't run into much lately. She tells her tale in the first person conversational past. Basically, it's like sitting down with a good friend you desperately need to catch up with and listening to her narrate what happened not so long ago, only with hindsight commentary thrown in for effect. If nothing else, even at the most tense of moments, it reminds you "hey, she has to live to be talking to me right now," and "at least she never lost her sense of humor." It's not a perspective I read often, and certainly more accessible than the times when I have run into it (see: House of Leaves), and that's rather refreshing.

Now, the down points. The stereotypical tropeyness is strong, so if that bothers you, be advised. But most importantly, do not read this for book club unless you're prepared for book club to turn into a full on discussion about rape culture, women's bodies as commodities, slut shaming, religious and cultural gender based subjugation, patriarchy, expendability, and whether or not using near rape as a means of building trust is skeevy.

So yeah, it's paranormal and interesting, and I read it in one sitting. It is a page turner, but at times I felt guilty for reading about the abuses suffered by the various characters, for my entertainment. Of course, I was entertained (maybe guilty pleasure level entertained?) so at least they didn't suffer for nothing, right?

My past comes back to terrorize me. Someone wants me dead, and the closer I get to the truth, the more I realize my whole life is a lie. I am no longer sure what is more frightening—the attempts on my life or the guy whose heart and soul are synchronized with mine.

           

EXCERPT

TJ and Rose kept the conversation rolling as I gave the appropriate one-word responses or a head nod. I didn’t have much of an appetite, mostly picking at my chicken Caesar salad and gazing out at the ocean, until…

His hair was black as a wintry night, eyes icy blue as a gypsy’s heart. He had a lazy saunter about him and a glint of humor twinkling in those heart-melting eyes. There was nothing loose about his body, muscles bunching as he tethered a boat to the dock. I twiddled the straw, staring brazenly.

Good God. I wanted to have his babies. Not now, but most definitely someday.

And just like that, my summer got a billion times hotter…and interesting—way more interesting. I bit my lip, mulling over how I was going to accidently fall into his pants. Um—I mean path or even his lap would do, anything to get that one’s attention.

Drool hit the table in a mad case of fangirl, and I didn’t even know his name.

As if he sensed he was being slobbered over, his eyes scraped over me, and I held my breath. Holy hot tamales. An electric bolt of…lust maybe, I really didn’t know what it was, but it coiled through my body, making me shudder. A flicker of an unidentified emotion crossed his face, right before a secret smile appeared on his lips. Oh man, don’t get me started on his lips.

Elbows propped on the table, I rested my head on the edge of my palms, continually gazing and getting lost in the depths of his eyes. He hypnotized me. I followed his movements, my eyes glued to him. Then one of my elbows slipped off the table in classic Piper form, and down I went. I caught myself just before my chin whacked a corner of the patio table.

Only me.

Mortified, I closed my eyes.

TJ laughed. “Smooth, Pipe. I think you made a lasting impression.”

Hi Georgia! Welcome to We Do Write. Tell us a bit about yourself.

Thanks for having me.  I am NYC born and raised. I now live in the South and have not yet acclimated in the seven years I have been here. I used to work in the music business and tech sector. You might know some of the artists I worked with – Destiny’s Child, Fall Out Boy, N’Sync, JaRule, Aaron Carter.  You might also have heard of some of the websites I had a hand in- MTV.com, eBay, Toysrus.com. I am a total dog person. Have 3 dogs, a fish and a parrot. If I had to describe myself, I would say “total Geek, recovering nerd, forever romantic.” Oh – I also write books and publish stuff. 

Tell our readers a bit about PRAEFATIO.

PRAEFATIO is about a girl who everyone thinks is a runaway. They’ve found her and now the person on whose estate she was found on, rock star Gavin Vault, is under arrest for her kidnapping. But, as the story unfolds, there is much more at play here, even as the doctors believe she is suffering from Stockholm Syndrome. They refuse to believe Grace’s story, which is that she is in fact an angel AND what happened to her is not an isolated incident, but the beginning of an ages-old prophecy in which she plays a huge part. 

How did the idea of the story come to you?

Characters began filling my head with their voices. I actually believed I was going crazy. Gavin Vault began speaking first, then Grace’s mother, then her brother Remi. Finally I started to write it all down. After I realized I had a story, I asked Grace to tell hers. A week later, she began to tell me what happened to her. I’m not insane, I promise.

Are you a plotter or a pantser?

I’m definitely a panster. I try to let the story grow organically. Every time I have ever plotted and try to steer the story, it has gone completely off course. 

What’s the hardest part of writing for you?

Hmm. I would say believing that anyone would want to read or, God forbid, like my stories. 

What do you absolutely have to have nearby when writing?

Coffee, wine, water. Not in that order. One of my dogs underfoot. 

What are you reading right now?

I am about to read RED QUEEN and AN EMBER IN THE ASHES. So excited to read them both.

If you could have any super power, what would it be?

I want to fly.

What's the weirdest thing you've googled?

Being an editor, I have to research lots of things. I have googled all kinds of things that are actual criminal in nature. The thing that made me the most nervous was researching how to counterfeit money!
