Welcome to We Do Right, Tia. Tell us a bit about yourself.

First, thanks so much for hosting me today.

You're very welcome. How long have you been writing?

Since I was able to pick up a pencil and form words.

Tell us about CHASING MEMORIES. What’s the story about?

Reagan is a typical seventeen year old, excited about prom, picking a college, and hanging out with her friends and boyfriend. That is until a family camping trip goes horribly wrong. Is she losing her mind or has she just stepped into a world she thought only existed in books? Caught in a web of worried parents, competing boys, Wiccan relatives, protective amulets, and psychiatrist babble, Reagan must determine the truth before it’s too late.

How did the idea of the story come to you?

My teenage daughter, who is obsessed with the paranormal/fantasy genre, has passed some great books to me over the years. It made me start to wonder how young adults would process a catastrophic event that hinted at a paranormal reality. What if the vampires, angels, werewolves, fairies, and other paranormal creatures they loved reading about really existed?

Do you have a critique group/partner or beta readers, or do you self-edit?

Although I’m a word nerd, I believe self-editing is only a first step. I have been an editor for business publications and now edit novels and short stories, but I know better than to serve as sole editor for my work. Not only is it hard to be completely objective, but it’s also hard to spot mistakes in a manuscript that is imprinted in your brain and heart. After several of my own edits, I handed Chasing Memories over to a professional editor and several beta-readers. Their input was invaluable.

Are you a plotter or a pantser?

I appreciate the structure of being a plotter, but as much as I’ve tried to embrace it, I am a complete pantser. Often, I don’t see what’s coming until I start typing it.

What’s the hardest part of writing for you?

Having my fingers type as quickly as the story develops in my brain. It’s hard to capture on paper all the things going on in my imagination.

What do you absolutely have to have nearby when writing?

Food. I don’t want anything to force me to leave the chair once I’m in the writing groove, and I have a stomach that knows what it wants when it wants it. Without food, hunger would take over my brain and the words would dissipate, and we couldn’t have that. I don’t over-indulge, but I make sure I’m energized for the exercise of writing.

If you could have any super power, what would it be?

An unfailing memory. Not only do I want to remember every detail of my life, both painful and happy, so that I can be a better writer, I also want to never forget a possible storyline or plot development.

What's the weirdest thing you've googled?

How to take care of a wild American toad. Two of my daughters are infatuated with toads, and we “rescued” a couple after a rainstorm. My girls needed to know every weird fact about their new friends, Bella and Jacob.

Interview with Emma Michaels

We first met author Emma Michaels when she featured an excerpt of her novel OWLET on the blog last year. Now Emma's back to talk more about OWLET, and we get to find out more about Emma herself!

Welcome to We Do Write, Emma. Tell us a bit about yourself.

Thank you for having me here! I am a book blogger turned published author and cover artist who simply adores all things literary. My novel Owlet is so close to my heart, I am thrilled to see it released out into the world for readers to get to see!

How long have you been writing?

My first publication was my currently out of print 'A Sense of Truth' series which debut in 2010. Since then I have switched publisher and now work with Tribute Books and Spencer Hill Press. Before that, I had been writing since I learned how to hold a pen, though for most of my life it was in secret. I would hide all of my notebooks to ensure no one could see my creations.

Tell us about OWLET. What’s the story about?

Owlet is about Iris, an asthmatic teen, who lost her memory when she was younger. She realizes her father has been lying to her and goes on a journey to uncover the truth, only the journey turns into one of self discovery as memories start to resurface.

Sounds interesting! How did the idea of the story come to you?

It started out as just a concept in a dream. It was an odd dream really and one I can hardly remember but it inspired a set of drawings and from there it all expanded!

Do you have a critique group/partner or beta readers, or do you self-edit?

I self edit, then have a critique partner go over it, then have my editor edit, then... Lets just say I love edits (and rewrites).

Are you a plotter or a pantser?

Both. I write out an extremely intricate plan of action then it all goes to the wind a few chapters in when I decide on a new plot twist. I normally end up at the same destination I had originally planned but the journey almost always changes as I go.

What’s the hardest part of writing for you?

Believing I can. Writing is very natural to me but when I know I am writing something the public will see I sometimes end up tripping up and getting more nervous. The trick for me if just getting past that and then enjoying the writing journey!

Right? I hear you on that one. What do you absolutely have to have nearby when writing?

...My mind. lol. I am pretty free with writing. Give me a napkin and a pen and I will probably start to doodle or jot down ideas. I do prefer typing though, so my laptop comes in handy for longer writing sprints.

If you could have any super power, what would it be?

The power from the movie 'Dark City' to reshape cities. I think it would be extraordinarily helpful after natural disasters to just be able to rebuild the city and move the rubble immediately.

Wow, that's a good one. And original! What's the weirdest thing you've googled?

Oh wow... as an author there are a lot of them. Probably how to get away with murder or bury a body. I had a mystery kick a while back that thankfully never reached publication but was a lot of fun to write. The research was very... enlightening. Afterwards I decided to stick to YA.

Interview with Andy Gavin

We're happy to be the next stop on the Untimed blog tour. Let's get to know author Andy Gavin a little better.

Welcome, Andy! Tell us a bit about yourself.

I’m an unstoppable storyteller who studied for his Ph.D. at M.I.T. and founded video game developer Naughty Dog, Inc. at the age of fifteen, serving as co-president for two decades. There I created, produced, and directed over a dozen video games, including the award winning and best selling Crash Bandicoot and Jak & Daxter franchises, selling over 40 million units worldwide. I sleep little, read novels and histories, watch media obsessively, travel, blog (a million hits last year!), and of course, write.

Untimed is my second novel.


How long have you been writing?

I started in ninth grade. In high school, I won several national literary awards for my short stories and I was an editor and contributor to our high school literary magazine. In college, despite being a diehard science guy, I took creative writing classes (sometimes I was the only guy) and submitted stories to Science Fiction and Fantasy magazines (not that they ever bought any!). I co-wrote the stories for many of my best selling video games. But video games aren’t as story driven as novels, so don’t judge these in the same light .

But it was in 2008 that I really got jamming in my current literary mode.


Tell us about UNTIMED. What’s the story about?

Charlie’s the kind of boy that no one notices. Hell, even his own mother can’t remember his name. And girls? The invisible man gets more dates.
As if that weren’t enough, when a mysterious clockwork man tries to kill him in modern day Philadelphia, and they tumble through a hole into 1725 London, Charlie realizes even the laws of time don’t take him seriously.
Still, this isn’t all bad. In fact, there’s this girl, another time traveler, who not only remembers his name, but might even like him! Unfortunately, Yvaine carries more than her share of baggage: like a baby boy and at least two ex-boyfriends! One’s famous, the other’s murderous, and Charlie doesn’t know who is the bigger problem.
When one kills the other — and the other is nineteen year-old Ben Franklin — things get really crazy. Can their relationship survive? Can the future? Charlie and Yvaine are time travelers, they can fix this — theoretically — but the rules are complicated and the stakes are history as we know it.
And there's one more wrinkle: he can only travel into the past, and she can only travel into the future!

How did the idea of the story come to you?

Typically, Untimed began from a fusion of ideas. Lingering in my mind for over twenty years was a time travel story about people from the future who fell “downtime” to relive exciting moments in history (until things go wrong). I worked out a time travel system but had no plot or characters. Separately, in 2010, as a break from editing The Darkening Dream, I experimented with new voice techniques, especially first person present. I also read various “competition.” One of these was The Lightning Thief (the first Percy Jackson novel), which has an amazing series concept (if a slightly limp execution).  I love mythology and history, and liked the notion of something with a rich body of material to mine. I wanted an open ended high concept that drew on my strengths, which brought me back to time travel.
Some of the mechanics from my earlier concept merged well with a younger protagonist, voiced in a visceral first person present style. I started thinking about it, and his voice popped into my head. I pounded out a chapter not too dissimilar from the first chapter of the final novel. Then the most awesome villain teleported into the situation. I can’t remember how or why, but it happened quickly and spontaneously. Tick-Tocks were born (or forged).

Do you have a critique group/partner or beta readers, or do you self-edit?

I use a lot of resources, because feedback and editing are crucial to good writing. I have 2-3 people (one is my wife) that read everything I write hot off the presses. It then gets quick tune ups. I self edit at least once or twice at that stage, then again after I finish a draft or a big section. Whole drafts go off to my editor, Renni Browne, who has 50 years experience and is totally amazing. Lots of redrafting then ensues, followed by more self-editing and finally an extensive line edit. All in all, I suspect I read each novel on the order of fifty times.

Are you a plotter or a pantser?

Personally I find the two different modes: plotting vs. just writing, to use different sides of the brain, and therefore useful to stagger. I can only handle a few days of plotting before I need the release of getting it out there. There really isn’t any rush in writing as good as just pounding out a great scene that’s already gelled in your head, and it’s even better when the scene and characters take on a life of their own and bring something novel to the process. Looking back on it, I realize that as a computer programmer I took this same exact alternating approach (between designing the algorithm and just coding) and that the rush and rhythm were nearly identical.

What’s the hardest part of writing for you?

With Untimed, the hardest parts had to do with the time travel. First of all, I had to come up with a unique new system that allowed multiple visits to the same time period, but wasn’t too overpowered. If your characters are too powerful, there is no jeopardy. So I had to invent all the restrictions and deal with the issues of paradox (and I think I have a crafty new solution there). Then I had to figure out how to make returning to the SAME action actually interesting for the reader. That was even harder.

What do you absolutely have to have nearby when writing?

iTunes and my water bottle.

If you could have any super power, what would it be?

I’ve thought about this a lot. Probably I’d be a telepath/pusher like Professor X. The combo of reading minds and controlling them would be totally badass, if horrifically unethical. And I’ve always been keen on having all the information. A vampire wouldn’t be too bad either if I didn’t have to kill my victims, only snack a bit.

What's the weirdest thing you've googled?

I’m absolutely NOT going to answer this question truthfully. But I do google a lot of weird stuff. Once I spent a while trying to find a reference I remembered from some book for an ancient Roman curse that involved shit and a lead tablet.

Interview with Jennifer Brown-Thomas

Today we're talking with author Jennifer Brown-Thomas about her book, BLISSFUL LIES.

Welcome to We Do Write, Jennifer. Tell us a bit about yourself.

Thank you so much for having me! I am a 26-year-old wife, mother, author, director and entrepreneur. I graduated from Texas Christian University in 2011 and I am enjoying the tireless process of my journey to achieve all the goals I have set. I am a mom to a beautiful, spunky, hardheaded little blonde haired beauty and I love every second of it.

How long have you been writing?

For as long as I can remember. When I was in fifth grade, I would script television shows and movies as the actors were saying their lines on the screen. I think that helped me to perfect my typing skills, which of course, has helped me to be more efficient in my creative writing.  

Tell us about BLISSFUL LIES. What’s the story about?

Blissful Lies, is a very character driven story. It’s easy to root for them, easy to hope they get their ‘happily ever after.’ The official synopsis: Blissful Lies is a heart-wrenching story exploring the enviable bonds of five best friends who, in the midst of growing up together, are just starting to realize how much they still have to learn about life.  They quickly find the limits of their relationships are tested when secrets and lies rapidly interrupt their picture perfect existence, threatening the stability of years of friendship. At the center of their universe is mother to one group member and Brown-Thomas University Chancellor, Addison Hamilton. Uncertainty in her own life leads her down a path of no return as she finds herself a little too involved with someone many years her junior. While each person is forced to take responsibility for their hidden secret, they wonder if ultimately, it’s just too much to move forward as the ‘family’ they once claimed to be. Join us on the journey, which allows true love to surface despite obvious obstacles, fearful hatred to emerge with a vengeance and betrayal of even the most loyal of friends. As lives are left in tattered pieces, everyone is forced to choose…. Will the group fall apart at the seams or will the strong bonds of everlasting friendship withstand the fire of deceit?

In the film, Blissful Lies, the female lead, Addison Hamilton, played by Leann Hunley, is a strong, successful, capable pillar of her community. She’s spent her life doing what makes other people happy… and now she’s doing something for herself. You’ll certainly be hoping her new romance gives her the happiness she never had with her husband…

How did the idea of the story come to you?

I just sat down and started writing one day. I think you use what you know, and you write about people, places and things you’ve seen along the way. In the book, lots of people, experiences and situations influence the characters, plots and locations but there wasn’t any one particular influence. I thought about it a little, sat down one day and just started writing…

Do you have a critique group/partner or beta readers, or do you self-edit?

-I host a series of edits amongst my team before we send the manuscript to the publisher/editor. These various rounds of edits help to weed out simple grammatical errors or missed words.

Are you a planner or a pantser?

-I think a little bit of both. When it comes to my personal life, it’s very ‘go with the flow’. That’s sort of how you have to embrace things when you have a child. But when it comes to my company and conducting business, we’re definitely planners! It takes a great deal of focus to stay ahead of the game with all we have going on.  

What’s the hardest part of writing for you?

-I’d have to say the hardest part of writing is just making sure that when the evening hours arrive, I’m not too tired. I do most of my writing between 8:00 p.m. and 6:00 a.m., and after a long day it takes me a couple of cups of coffee to get my second wind. 

What do you absolutely have to have nearby when writing?

-A cup of coffee and my phone. Haha. I take a break every couple of hours and text chat with my cousin. She and I have the funniest conversations at three in the morning. Totally my lifeline… 

If you could have any super power, what would it be?

-Teleportation. As busy as I am it would be amazing to just teleport from one place to another in the blink of an eye. 

What's the weirdest thing you've googled?

-I honestly laughed out loud at this question. The weirdest thing I’ve ever googled would have to be: “Is there a spatula in Fifty Shades of Grey?” – In regards to Ellen Degeneres’ reading of Fifty Shades of Grey.   http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=on3JCwnwHbU

• I literally have the most amazing support system. My husband is supportive of the time my career demands, which is such a blessing. It’s not easy having so many irons in the fire, and he respects and encourages my dreams. My mom is my Texas manager, so she’s involved in everything I do. From scheduling to negotiating, she’s a regular Kris Jenner—so I’m incredibly lucky to have her. In fact, that’s what we call her—“Kris.”  No one will love or protect you like your mother does. My dad is so supportive too. During filming, Blissful Lies, we ran into some awkward obstacles. One day on set when we were filming on-location, a huge round skylight presented a problem during a shot that was supposed to take place at night. The room was radiating with light, making it obvious the scene wasn’t being filmed during the day. So, my dad ran to buy a huge tarp, climbed up on top of the hotel where we were filming and then on top of a tower on the roof and covered the giant hole so it appeared to look like early evening. That was just one of the many things he did during the entire process. He’s amazing. My cousin Tara is so supportive too. She’s always making me laugh, sending my encouraging words and making me laugh with emoticons. She’s such an important part of my life. My grandmother is overwhelmingly encouraging too. I’m so blessed to have all of my family around me pushing and promoting me in every way possible. My cousins, aunts, uncles, in-laws, etc. I am really close to my husband’s family too, so I get the best of both worlds. It’s incredible.

• Throughout my short career I have met some really unbelievable, inspirational people. One lady, in particular, who is the very definition of class; who occasionally reminds me why we’re in this business in the first place; who has remained true to herself and encourages me to do the same, despite the Hollywood glitz and glamour is Lauren Koslow. She’s a very talented actress, and now dear friend. I look forward to working with her on future projects.

Can There Be More Than One Soul Mate?

This is a tough question. Frankly, some would shout ‘sacrilege!’ if you said there could be more than one. After all, the whole point of romance is that there is one out there who was born for you. They are your other half; the one who stands by your side no matter what happens. One cheesy line from the movies that springs to mind is: “You complete me.” Which is what a soul mate would say.

But when it comes to Emily, she lives as a tortured soul as she does her work and completes her lives. Unlike Mathew, who seems to be completely sure that his angel partner is THE one who he wishes to be connected with in the romance department, Emily has an issue. She cares for Jason and Matthew and is attracted to them both. Even if they make her feel a certain way - whether it be seductive and sexy or calm and loving - Emily is tested to the limits where her heart is concerned, because she feels that no matter which one she chooses, someone will be hurt. And that ‘someone’ is the group of people she was sent to save.

Emily has powers and gifts that she uses to help others down below - whether it be with words or actions - but she is also a girl. She feels the need for a partner who will protect her and love her no matter what. However, when she falls, she falls hard. With Jason, she would have a life of love and happiness. She could create a family with him and live with him the rest of her lives because her heart would continue to beat with true love. But…when you’re that much in love with someone, could you sacrifice them to do what you were meant to do…which is save others?  

When it comes to Matthew, Emily is already in love. With Matthew there is a history. He has been friend, brother, partner and now…love? Have the angel/warrior become a young man and woman who need to finally admit that they are the soul mates that everyone thinks they should be? In the end, Emily’s problem doesn’t change. She will always stand in front of Matthew or sacrifice for him because of how much he means to her. And with that strong emotion comes the fact that if she does fall over the edge - if the friendship turns to true love - she knows she will turn her back on the rest of the souls in order to save only his.

Is Emily wrong? IS there only one soul mate and she just can’t see who that person is? Or is she simply so fearful that she will hurt others that she will choose to never give her heart away? Do I believe there’s more than one soul mate? No. However, I do believe you can be happy and loved even if it’s not the one, because that ‘one’ is only found by certain lucky people in their lifetimes.

Is Jason or is Matthew the soul mate here? Well…we shall see. But Emily does give others a great deal to think about.

“We’re running out of time.”

I can hear the frustration in Matthew’s voice. I look up into his brilliant blue eyes and offer a smile, trying to soften my ironic tone. “Yet, here we sit, wasting our time reading.”

A smile plays at the corners of Matthew’s mouth. The hope and excitement of living out yet another life shines from his soul. His eyes are older now. He’s seen pain; he even walked the earth the first time around in a shell I didn’t much like. But I love him.

Actually, I sometimes feel like I’m in love with him. He and I fought in the training pit filled with flames because of that feeling. But we survived. Right before we went into this second life that I’m about to relive I declared my love to someone else. Jason. Yup, he has the soul meant for me on earth. I know that. At least, I knew that. Now I’m so confused, I have no idea what I’m doing.

Amy Lignor began her career at Grey House Publishing in northwest Connecticut where she was the Editor-in-Chief of numerous educational and business directories.

Now she is a published author of several works of fiction. The Billy the Kid historical The Heart of a Legend; the thriller, Mind Made; and the adventure novel, Tallent & Lowery 13.

She is also the owner of The Write Companion, a company that offers help and support to writers through a full range of editorial services from proofreading and copyediting to ghostwriting and research. As the daughter of a research librarian, she is also an active book reviewer.
