#YASH #TeamBlue Dorothy Dreyer hosts Trisha Leaver

This is Dorothy Dreyer's YASH post for TEAM BLUE.
If you're looking for Elizabeth Holloway's post for TEAM GREEN, click here!

It's live! It's live!

Welcome to YA Scavenger Hunt! This bi-annual event was first organized by author Colleen Houck as a way to give readers a chance to gain access to exclusive bonus material from their favorite authors...and a chance to win some awesome prizes! At this hunt, you not only get access to exclusive content from each author, you also get a clue for the hunt. Add up the clues, and you can enter for our prize--one lucky winner will receive one signed book from each author on the hunt in my team! But play fast: this contest (and all the exclusive bonus material) will only be online for 72 hours!

Go to the YA Scavenger Hunt page to find out all about the hunt. There are EIGHT contests going on simultaneously, and you can enter one or all! I am a part of the BLUE TEAM--but there is also a RED, GOLD, GREEN, ORANGE, TEAL, PURPLE, and PINK team for a chance to win a whole different set of signed books!

If you'd like to find out more about the hunt, see links to all the authors participating, and see the full list of prizes up for grabs, go to the YA Scavenger Hunt page.

SCAVENGER HUNT PUZZLE

Directions: Below, you'll notice that I've listed my favorite number. Collect the favorite numbers of all the authors on the blue team, and then add them up (don't worry, you can use a calculator!).

Entry Form: Once you've added up all the numbers, make sure you fill out the form here to officially qualify for the grand prize. Only entries that have the correct number will qualify.

Rules: Open internationally, anyone below the age of 18 should have a parent or guardian's permission to enter. To be eligible for the grand prize, you must submit the completed entry form by April 5th, at noon Pacific Time. Entries sent without the correct number or without contact information will not be considered.

SCAVENGER HUNT POST

Today, I am hosting Trisha Leaver on my blog for the YA Scavenger Hunt! Trisha Leaver lives on Cape Cod with her husband, three children, and one rather excitable black lab. It might just be a rumor, but I heard she keeps 9 alligators in a pond in her back yard. She is a chronic daydreamer who prefers the cozy confines of her own imagination to the mundane routine of everyday life. Trisha writes Young Adult Contemporary, Psychological Horror and Science fiction. She is published with FSG/ Macmillan, Flux/Llewellyn, and Merit Press.

Find out more information by checking out the author website or find more about the author's book here

EXCLUSIVE CONTENT

Trisha is sharing a deleted scene from her book, THE SECRETS WE KEEP. First, a little about the book.

"A girl takes over her twin sister's identity in this emotionally charged page-turner about the complicated bond between sisters."

Ella and Maddy Lawton are identical twins. Ella has spent her high school years living in popular Maddy's shadows, but she has never been envious of Maddy. In fact, she's chosen the quiet, safe confines of her sketchbook over the constant battle for attention that has defined Maddy's world.

When--after a heated argument--Maddy and Ella get into a tragic accident that leaves her sister dead, Ella wakes up in the hospital surrounded by loved ones who believe she is Maddy. Feeling responsible for Maddy's death and everyone's grief, Ella makes a split-second decision to pretend to be Maddy. Soon, Ella realizes that Maddy's life was full of secrets. Caught in a web of lies, Ella is faced with two options--confess her deception or live her sister's life.

I don't know about you, but I'm dying to read this! And now, the deleted scene from THE SECRETS WE KEEP.

November 3rd
5:19pm

I stare at my wrist, clean and pale from spending weeks in a cast. No more bangles or Pandora bracelets. I even took the time to scrub off the nail polish I’d paid twelve bucks for two days ago. I didn’t want any remnants of Maddy around me when I did this.
The only thing I’ve left on, besides this damn waterproof mascara, is a poor replica of the friendship bracelet Josh gave me a few years ago. I tried for hours to re-create it, weave the strings into just the right pattern. It didn’t look anything like the original one they’d cut off at the hospital, but it was as close as I could get. I needed it on, a reminder of the once constant connection to who I really was . . . who he was to me.
In all of this, he is my only regret. Josh and Josh alone.

November 3rd
5:33pm

I open my eyes, the pain lancing through body pulling me back to consciousness. They lied. This isn’t painless. I’m not slipping peacefully into the darkness. I’m stuck here in searing pain, begging for this to end.
The world around me is swimming. My mind is fuzzy and full of static like a TV tuned to an in-between channel. My thoughts are there, but they are scattered and fleeting, escaping me before I can grasp and finish them.
I hold my breath and sink below the water, hoping that maybe I’ll drown. The water is seeping into my nose, the rusty taste of blood filling my senses. Instinct takes over, forcing me to come up for air. Why can’t it be easier? Why can’t I just let go?

The pain is constant, like a slow torturous reminder of what I’d done. I want to give into to it, to let it take me under, but I can’t. Some part of me is still holding on.

I think it is beautiful, I love the flowers that are on both sides. Very different and unique. I also wanted to let you know that the two goodreads links do not bring up goodreads.

I love the deleted scene. Sometimes I'm afraid to read them during the hunt for whatever reason. But I read it this time and I'm glad I did.

I'd never visited before, so these are just impressions for now. Can't compare what I don't know! I really like the scheme used. The background is easy to read on. I like the flower border, but I just realized that it's not adapting to window size - meaning, I only saw a slice of it with my narrower window. I actually prefer it this way, because with the full flower border, it's a bit too busy. The slice adds just the right amount of interest to the border (I hope that makes sense, it feels like a clunky explanation!) I <3 that you have the archive tree showing on your blog, with significantly different colors for text after you've visited. It makes it easier to navigate the site, in my opinion, and the different color (the purple) showing where I've been is great for my poor memory, so I'm not opening a ton of things just to close immediately, once I realize I read them previously. I'm *not* a fan of all the different buttons on the right side to promote various things. With two columns side to side and my window size, they take up 1/3 of the width of the page. It's really distracting to have such a large chunk of bright colors next to the flat text you see in review posts. The eye gets drawn over there. I'm also not a fan of redundancy, as it again adds more clutter when everything design-wise is moving to a more simple look. Having the bloglovin button at the end of articles on top of having it at the top of the right hand side of the page seems pointless. Realistically, I'm more likely to look for it in the upper right column, then elsewhere in that side of the page, before I'd expect it to be at the foot of the article. Once you see the big image with name listed, you know it's the end, so you're not likely to go down further with the same attention as the article was given. I'd breeze past it for comments (and I did do so; didn't see it until I started critiquing this). The tags column is nice, but maybe you could try one of the tag clouds, where more frequently used (and more likely to be the target of someone looking at tags for something) tags are larger font. Just another trick to help your eye quickly go where you want it too, especially with such a long list. Drop down menus are also nice for that. :)

Sorry - when I see someone asking me to give my thoughts, I really *give* my thoughts. I hope that the comments are actually being considered, rather than the question just wanting people to notice the look and say a quick "it's pretty" or "I like it, but there are parts I don't like as much." I really try to give feedback that might be useful (my job pre-disability involved user interface stuff for software, so looking at how people would use it and laying things out to make it easiest to use to accomplish their tasks). Maybe this'll be of interest to you :)
